Book Synopsis Perceived Control, Coping, and Health in Type 2 Diabetes by : April M. Fritch
Download or read book Perceived Control, Coping, and Health in Type 2 Diabetes written by April M. Fritch and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The associations among perceived control, coping, and health in 69 adults with type 2 diabetes were examined. The goal of the current study was to determine whether a mediational model, based on Lazarus and Folkman's transactional model of stress and coping, or a mode rational model, based on Terry & Conway's goodness-of-fit hypothesis, was more appropriate to describe the relationships among perceived control, coping, and health. Regression analyses revealed that (a) emotion-focused coping mediated the relationships between perceived control, (b) perceived control also acted through an indirect effect on emotion-focused coping and health behavior to impact self-rated physical health, and (c) perceived control moderated the relationship between emotion-focused coping and psychological distress. These results provide partial support for both the transactional model and the goodness-of-fit hypothesis. Results are discussed in terms of the transactional model, goodness-of-fit hypothesis, optimal coping, and the importance of perceived control in psychological adjustments. Limitations and future research directions are discussed. Especially the potential role of patient education and its impact on perceptions of control are considered.

Book Synopsis Coping with Disease by : Annette V. Lee
Download or read book Coping with Disease written by Annette V. Lee and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there is a single challenge a person faces in every stage of life from birth to death, it is the necessity of coping with life's exigencies. These often include health problems, social stress, and perceived difficulties. The ability to deal with these issues defines an individual to a large extent and can accelerate or brake one's development in the multitude of mental and physical pathways intrinsic to life. Coping behaviours include talking out a problem, crying, laughing, relaxation, ignoring the problem, praying, looking for the positive aspects of a situation, assuming everything is terrible, taking medication, hoping a problem will go away, attacking the problem with willpower, cognitive therapy etc. This new book examines new research which will shed light on coping behaviours in a vast array of disease situations.
Download or read book DIABETES written by Val Wilson and published by Teneo Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes: The Psychology of Control explores the many psychosocial barriers to good diabetes control such as negative health beliefs, poor motivation for self-care, an external locus of control, denial, depression, and disordered eating. Diabetes coping strategies, resilience, and empowerment enable the individual to overcome these barriers, once recognized, to improve physical and psychological health. This book also discusses the alarming increase in cases of Type 2 diabetes and the finding that bariatric (weight loss) surgery can successfully address this problem by reversing the condition. However this lifestyle change has a huge, potentially negative psychological impact on the individual. Unlike other books on psychology and diabetes, Diabetes: The Psychology of Control is written by a health professional with long personal experience and insight into difficult to control diabetes. This book fills a gap for adults with the condition, their families, and those caring for them.

Book Synopsis Depression and Diabetes by : Wayne Katon
Download or read book Depression and Diabetes written by Wayne Katon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the multiple interrelationships between depression and various physical diseases. The WPA is providing an update of currently available evidence on these interrelationships by the publication of three books, dealing with the comorbidity of depression with diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Depression is a frequent and serious comorbid condition in diabetes, which adversely affects quality of life and the long-term prognosis. Co-occurrent depression presents peculiar clinical challenges, making both conditions harder to manage. Depression and Diabetes is the first book devoted to the interaction between these common disorders. World leaders in diabetes, depression and public health synthesize current evidence, including some previously unpublished data, in a concise, easy-to-read format. They provide an overview of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, medical costs, management, and public health and cultural implications of the comorbidity between depression and diabetes. The book describes how the negative consequences of depression in diabetes could be avoided, given that effective depression treatments for diabetic patients are available. Its practical approach makes the book ideal for all those involved in the management of these patients: psychiatrists, psychologists, diabetologists, general practitioners, diabetes specialist nurses and mental health nurses.

Book Synopsis Existential-Phenomenological Perspectives in Psychology by : Ronald S. Valle
Download or read book Existential-Phenomenological Perspectives in Psychology written by Ronald S. Valle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I began to study psychology a half century ago, it was defined as "the study of behavior and experience." By the time I completed my doctorate, shortly after the end of World War II, the last two words were fading rapidly. In one of my first graduate classes, a course in statistics, the professor announced on the first day, "Whatever exists, exists in some number." We dutifully wrote that into our notes and did not pause to recognize that thereby all that makes life meaningful was being consigned to oblivion. This bland restructuring-perhaps more accurately, destruction-of the world was typical of its time, 1940. The influence of a narrow scientistic attitude was already spreading throughout the learned disciplines. In the next two decades it would invade and tyrannize the "social sciences," education, and even philosophy. To be sure, quantification is a powerful tool, selectively employed, but too often it has been made into an executioner's axe to deny actuality to all that does not yield to its procrustean demands.
