Book Synopsis Does Anything Really Matter? by : Peter Singer
Download or read book Does Anything Really Matter? written by Peter Singer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first two volumes of On What Matters Derek Parfit argues that there are objective moral truths, and other normative truths about what we have reasons to believe, and to want, and to do. He thus challenges a view of the role of reason in action that can be traced back to David Hume, and is widely assumed to be correct, not only by philosophers but also by economists. In defending his view, Parfit argues that if there are no objective normative truths, nihilism follows, and nothing matters. He criticizes, often forcefully, many leading contemporary philosophers working on the nature of ethics, including Simon Blackburn, Stephen Darwall, Allen Gibbard, Frank Jackson, Peter Railton, Mark Schroeder, Michael Smith, and Sharon Street. Does Anything Really Matter? gives these philosophers an opportunity to respond to Parfit's criticisms, and includes essays on Parfit's views by Richard Chappell, Andrew Huddleston, Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek and Peter Singer, Bruce Russell, and Larry Temkin. A third volume of On What Matters, in which Parfit engages with his critics and breaks new ground in finding significant agreement between his own views and theirs, is appearing as a separate companion volume.

Book excerpt: This guidebook goes beyond people analytics to provide a research-based, practice-tested methodology for doing relational analytics, based on the science of relational coordination. We are witnessing a revolution in people analytics, where data are used to identify and leverage human talent to drive performance outcomes. Today’s workplace is interdependent, however, and individuals drive performance through networks that span department, organization and sector boundaries. This book shares the relational coordination framework, with a validated scalable analytic tool that has been used successfully across dozens of countries and industries to understand, measure and influence networks of relationships in and across organizations, and which can be applied at any level in the private and public sectors worldwide. Graduate students and practitioners in human resource management, health policy and management, organizational behavior, engineering and network analysis will appreciate the methodology and hands-on guidance this book provides, with its focus on identifying, analyzing and building networks of productive interdependence. Online resources include data appendices and statistical commands that can be used to conduct all these analyses in readers’ own organizations.

Using many illustrations and international examples, the book analyses culture, cultural diversity and cultural similarities and differences in how we interact at work and in the psychological factors that influence our communication. It shows how to overcome impediments to intercultural communication and interact effectively with different others, whether face-to-face or by email, chat, text, phone or video. It describes cultural differences in negotiating, cooperation, coordination, knowledge sharing, working in groups and leadership, and demonstrates how to perform these activities skilfully in an intercultural setting. This textbook is the ideal companion for students taking undergraduate modules in cross-cultural management or managing diversity on international business or business administration degrees, in addition to MBA courses and specialist postgraduate modules on international and comparative management. New to this Edition: - New and improved pedagogical features, including end of Part exercises, activities and role plays - Topic-by-topic coverage of computer-mediated communication, explaining how it is affected by culture and in turn affects intercultural communication - Discussion of new developments in the field such as the increasing emphasis on language and discourses - Focus on new types of research such as country-by-country studies and reports of realities on the ground
