Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the bond valence model, a description of acid-base bonding which is becoming increasingly popular particularly in fields such as materials science and mineralogy where solid state inorganic chemistry is important. Recent improvements in crystal structure determination have allowed the model to become more quantitative. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, and predictive, and can be used for analysing crystal structures and the conceptual modelling of local as well as extended structures. This is the first book to explore in depth the theoretical basis of the model and to show how it can be applied to synthetic and solution chemistry. It emphasizes the separate roles of the constraints of chemistry and of three-dimensional space by analysing the chemistry of solids. Many applications of the model in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy, soil science, surface science, and molecular biology are reviewed. The final chapter describes how the bond valence model relates to and represents a simplification of other models of inorganic chemical bonding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers all important nomenclature, theories of bonding and stereochemistry of coordination complexes. The authors have made an effort to inscribe the ideas knowledge, clearly and in an interesting way to benefit the readers. The complexities of Molecular Orbital theory have been explained in a very simple and easy manner. It also deals with transition and inner transition metals. Conceptually, all transition and inner transition elements form complexes which have definite geometry and show interesting properties. General and specific methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties of each element has been discussed at length. Group wise study of elements in d-block series have been explained. Important compounds, complexes and organometallic compounds of metals in different oxidation states have been given explicitly. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bond valence model, a description of acid-base bonding, is widely used for analysing and modelling the structures and properties of solids and liquids. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, and predictive, and is accessible to anyone with a pocket calculator and a secondary school command of chemistry and physics. This new edition of 'The Chemical Bond in Inorganic Chemistry: The Bond Valence Model' shows how chemical properties arise naturally from the conflict between the constraints of chemistry and those of three-dimensional space. The book derives the rules of the bond valence model, as well as those of the traditional covalent, ionic and popular VSEPR models, by identifying the chemical bond with the electrostatic flux linking the bonded atoms. Most of the new edition is devoted to showing how to apply these ideas to real materials including crystals, liquids, glasses and surfaces. The work includes detailed examples of applications, and the final chapter explores the relationship between the flux and quantum theories of the bond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To appreciate the chemistry and physical properties of complexes of the transition series, an understanding of metal-ligand interactions applied to complexes of the d-block is needed. Metal Ligand Bonding aims to provide this through an accessible, detailed, non-mathematical approach. Initial chapters detail the crystal-field model, using it to describe the use of magnetic measurements to distinguish complexes with different electronic configurations and geometries. Subsequent chapters look at the molecular orbital theory of transition metal complexes using a pictorial approach. Bonding in octahedral complexes is explored and electronic spectra and magnetic properties are given extensive coverage. The material addressed in this book forms the foundation of undergraduate lecture courses on d-block chemistry and facilitates learning through various key features, including: full colour diagrams; in-text questions with answers; revision exercises and clearly defined learning outcomes to encourage a reflective approach to study; an associated website; and experimental data and observations from everyday life. A basic knowledge of atomic and molecular orbitals as applied to main group elements is assumed.

Book excerpt: Compounds of the Transition Elements Involving Metal-Metal Bonds focuses on compounds of the transition elements involving metal-metal bonds. Emphasis is on metal-metal bonds in coordination compounds and organometallic complexes, halides, and oxides. Factors that influence the formation, stability, and properties of such compounds, as well as their application in various fields of chemistry and physics, are discussed. This book is divided into four sections and begins with a classification of metal-metal bonds and some of the physical and chemical methods used to study them, including X-ray crystallography, magnetic susceptibility and electron spin resonance, nuclear spin resonance, Mössbauer measurements, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, visible and ultraviolet spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, electrical conductivity, electrochemistry, and chemical reactivity. Factors influencing the strength of metal-metal bonds in metals and compounds are also examined. The remaining sections deal with metal-metal bonds in coordination compounds and organometallic complexes, halides, and oxides. This monograph will be a useful resource for inorganic chemists.

Book excerpt: The 9th Jerusalem Symposium was dedicated to the memory of Professor Ernst David Bergmann. An imposing and deeply moving memorial session, chaired by Professor Ephraim Katzir, the President of the State of IsƯ rael and a close friend of Professor Bergmann preceded the Symposium itself. During this session, Professor Bergmann's personality, scienƯ tific achievements and contributions to the development of his country were described and praised, besides President Katzir, by Professor A. Dvoretzky, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Professor D. Ginsburg, Dean of the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa and the author of these lines. May I just quote short extracts from these speeches. President Katzir: "As we open this ninth in the series of symposia initiated in 1967, it is difficult for me as, I am sure, for many of Ernst Bergmann's friends, co-workers and students, to be here without him. He was not only a great scientist and a beloved teacher, he was one of the most important founders of science in this country. To him we owe many institutes and the establishment here of many branches of science." Professor Dvoretzky: "Ernst Bergmann's greatness did not stem from one component overshadowing all the others. It was a multifaceted greatƯ ness consisting of the harmonious co~lescing of seemingly contrasting entities into a wonderful unity "

Excerpt: A stability constant (formation constant, binding constant) is an equilibrium constant for the formation of a complex in solution. It is a measure of the strength of the interaction between the reagents that come together to form the complex. There are two main kinds of complex: compounds formed by the interaction of a metal ion with a ligand and supramolecular complexes, such as host-guest complexes and complexes of anions. The stability constant(s) provide the information required to calculate the concentration(s) of the complex(es) in solution. There are many areas of application in chemistry, biology...
