Book excerpt: In this work design methods are given for distributed synchronization control of multi-agent systems on directed communication graphs. Conditions are derived based on the relation of the graph eigenvalues to a region in a complex plane that depends on the single-agent system and the solution of the local Riccati equation. The synchronizing region concept is used. Cooperative observer design, guaranteeing convergence of the local estimates to their true values, is also proposed. The notion of convergence region for distributed observers is introduced. A duality principle is shown to hold for distributed observers and controllers on balanced graph topologies. Application of cooperative observers is made to the distributed synchronization problem. Three dynamic regulator architectures are proposed for cooperative synchronization. In the second part this work brings together stability and optimality theory to design distributed cooperative control protocols, which guarantee consensus and are globally optimal with respect to a structured performance criterion. Here an inverse optimality approach is used together with partial stability to consider cooperative consensus and synchronization algorithms. A new class of digraphs is defined admitting a distributed solution to the global optimal control problem. The third part of this work investigates cooperative control performance under disturbances, and distributed static output-feedback control. Control design for the state consensus in presence of disturbances is investigated. Derived results are also applicable to multi-agent systems with heterogeneous agents. If, on the other hand, one constrains the control to be of the static output-feedback form, one needs to redefine the synchronizing region as the output-feedback synchronizing region.Contributions to Discrete-time Multi-agent Consensus ProblemThe main contribution to the discrete-time multi-agent consensus problem is the proposed design method based on local Riccati feedback gains, guaranteeing cooperative stability and convergence to consensus.Contributions to Globally Optimal Distributed Control ProblemThe globally optimal distributed synchronization control protocols are investigated. The main contribution is in merging the notions of inverse optimality and partial stability to guarantee robust stabilization to the noncompact consensus manifold. Furthermore, second contribution is the introduction of the class of digraphs that gives a distributed solution to a structured global optimal control problem.Contributions to Cooperative Robustness of Multi-agent SystemsThe robustness properties of asymptotic and exponential stability are applied in the context of cooperative stability for consensus. The results are based on Lyapunov functions for noncompact manifolds, and the pertinent stability and robustness properties are further elaborated. Distributed and local observers are utilized for disturbance compensation. Contributions to Distributed Output-feedback for State SynchronizationAn application of the cooperative stability analysis, via synchronizing region, to the distributed output-feedback is presented. It is shown that the guaranteed synchronizing region for output-feedback can be both bounded and unbounded.

Book excerpt: Cooperative Control of Multi-Agent Systems extends optimal control and adaptive control design methods to multi-agent systems on communication graphs. It develops Riccati design techniques for general linear dynamics for cooperative state feedback design, cooperative observer design, and cooperative dynamic output feedback design. Both continuous-time and discrete-time dynamical multi-agent systems are treated. Optimal cooperative control is introduced and neural adaptive design techniques for multi-agent nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics, which are rarely treated in literature are developed. Results spanning systems with first-, second- and on up to general high-order nonlinear dynamics are presented. Each control methodology proposed is developed by rigorous proofs. All algorithms are justified by simulation examples. The text is self-contained and will serve as an excellent comprehensive source of information for researchers and graduate students working with multi-agent systems.

Book excerpt: Distributed controller design is generally a challenging task, especially for multi-agent systems with complex dynamics, due to the interconnected effect of the agent dynamics, the interaction graph among agents, and the cooperative control laws. Cooperative Control of Multi-Agent Systems: A Consensus Region Approach offers a systematic framework for designing distributed controllers for multi-agent systems with general linear agent dynamics, linear agent dynamics with uncertainties, and Lipschitz nonlinear agent dynamics. Beginning with an introduction to cooperative control and graph theory, this monograph: Explores the consensus control problem for continuous-time and discrete-time linear multi-agent systems Studies the H∞ and H2 consensus problems for linear multi-agent systems subject to external disturbances Designs distributed adaptive consensus protocols for continuous-time linear multi-agent systems Considers the distributed tracking control problem for linear multi-agent systems with a leader of nonzero control input Examines the distributed containment control problem for the case with multiple leaders Covers the robust cooperative control problem for multi-agent systems with linear nominal agent dynamics subject to heterogeneous matching uncertainties Discusses the global consensus problem for Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems Cooperative Control of Multi-Agent Systems: A Consensus Region Approach provides a novel approach to designing distributed cooperative protocols for multi-agent systems with complex dynamics. The proposed consensus region decouples the design of the feedback gain matrices of the cooperative protocols from the communication graph and serves as a measure for the robustness of the protocols to variations of the communication graph. By exploiting the decoupling feature, adaptive cooperative protocols are presented that can be designed and implemented in a fully distributed fashion.

Its emphasis is on complex multi-agent systems characterized by strong nonlinearity, large uncertainty, heterogeneity, external disturbances and jointly connected switching communication topologies. The cooperative output regulation problem is a generalization of the classical output regulation problem to multi-agent systems and it offers a general framework for handling a variety of cooperative control problems such as consensus, formation, tracking and disturbance rejection. The book strikes a balance between rigorous mathematical proof and engineering practicality. Every design method is systematically presented together with illustrative examples and all the designs are validated by computer simulation. The methods presented are applied to several practical problems, among them the leader-following consensus problem of multiple Euler–Lagrange systems, attitude synchronization of multiple rigid-body systems, and power regulation of microgrids. The book gives a detailed exposition of two approaches to the design of distributed control laws for complex multi-agent systems—the distributed-observer and distributed-internal-model approaches. Mastering both will enhance a reader’s ability to deal with a variety of complex real-world problems. Cooperative Control of Multi-agent Systems can be used as a textbook for graduate students in engineering, sciences, and mathematics, and can also serve as a reference book for practitioners and theorists in both industry and academia. Some knowledge of the fundamentals of linear algebra, calculus, and linear systems are needed to gain maximum benefit from this book. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Fundamental concepts of fixed-time stability and stabilization are introduced with insightful understanding. This book presents solutions for several problems of fixed-time cooperative control using systematic design methods. The book compares fixed-time cooperative control with asymptotic cooperative control, demonstrating how the former can achieve better closed-loop performance and disturbance rejection properties. It also discusses the differences from finite-time control, and shows how fixed-time cooperative control can produce the faster rate of convergence and provide an explicit estimate of the settling time independent of initial conditions. This monograph presents multiple applications of fixed-time control schemes, including to distributed optimization of multi-agent systems, making it useful to students, researchers and engineers alike.

Book excerpt: The thesis presents new results on multi-agent formation control, focusing on the distributed stabilization control of rigid formation shapes. It analyzes a range of current research problems such as problems concerning the equilibrium and stability of formation control systems, or the problem of cooperative coordination control when agents have general dynamical models, and discusses practical considerations arising during the implementation of established formation control algorithms. In addition, the thesis presents models of increasing complexity, from single integrator models, to double integrator models, to agents modeled by nonlinear kinematic and dynamic equations, including the familiar unicycle model and nonlinear system equations with drift terms. Presenting the fruits of a close collaboration between several top control groups at leading universities including Yale University, Groningen University, Purdue University and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), the thesis spans various research areas, including robustness issues in formations, quantization-based coordination, exponential stability in formation systems, and cooperative coordination of networked heterogeneous systems.

Book excerpt: Cooperative control of multi-agent systems (MASs) has been a hot topic in control and communication community since it was proposed in last two decades. Cooperative control is applied to a wide range of real world problems, such as search and rescue, resource allocation and multiple robot formation. In order to realize a cooperative goal, a communication network is introduced to facilitate the information flow among MASs, which brings network-induced imperfections at the same time. In addition, the energy of onboard sensors and microprocessors, and the bandwidth of communication networks are limited. It is preferred to reduce the frequency of controller updates and data transmissions. Motivated by the above concerns, this thesis focuses on investigating the robustness of MASs against network-induced imperfections and proposing event-triggered mechanisms (ETMs) to reduce the network load and/or energy consumptions. Four research topics are considered. Firstly, an affine formation under fixed and switching topologies is studied. An ETM is proposed, such that the controller updates and data transmissions occur only when it is necessary to maintain system stability. To guarantee Zeno-freeness, an absolute term is introduced in the price of introducing steady-state errors. Secondly, a cooperative output regulation (COR) problem is studied. The problem is formulated in a hybrid system framework. By proposing a novel Lyapunov function, robustness against asynchronous samplings and time-varying delays are given in terms of maximally allowable transmission intervals (MATIs) and maximally allowable delays (MADs). Thirdly, a formation tracking problem of multiple nonholonomic systems without velocity measurements is considered. Two kinds of communication, namely, pull-based communication (PULC), which is enabled by agents' onboard sensors, and push-based communication (PUSC), which is realized by data transmissions through networks, are considered separately. A periodic event-triggered mechanism (PETM) is proposed for PUSC, such that the closed-loop sampled-data system is robust to asynchronous samplings, at the same time, continuous monitoring and Zeno-behavior are avoided. In addition, a hierarchical structure is proposed, according to which, the followers are divided into two levels. Strongly integral input-to-state stability (iISS) is established for the closed-loop system. Finally, a distributed optimization-based formation problem is studied. The control protocol is design based on a modified Lagrangian-based (MLB) algorithm, under which, the agents can reach the global optimal solution and converge to the desirable formation structure simultaneously. A dynamic ETM is proposed to reduce network load. To guarantee Zeno-freeness in the presence of disturbances, an auxiliary variable is introduced to estimate the influence of disturbances. The closed-loop system is proved to be input-to-state exponentially stable (ISES) w.r.t. the disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed methods are illustrated by numerical examples. Under the proposed ETMs, unnecessary data transmissions and/or controller updates can be efficiently reduced. Zeno-freeness is guaranteed by event separation properties or computable positive minimum inter-event times. In addition, the proposed methods improve the robustness of closed-loop systems against network-induced imperfections.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the characteristics of cooperative control problems for general linear multi-agent systems, including formation control, air traffic control, rendezvous, foraging, role assignment, and cooperative search. On this basis and combined with linear system theory, it introduces readers to the cooperative tracking problem for identical continuous-time multi-agent systems under state-coupled dynamics; the cooperative output regulation for heterogeneous multi-agent systems; and the optimal output regulation for model-free multi-agent systems. In closing, the results are extended to multiple leaders, and cooperative containment control for uncertain multi-agent systems is addressed. Given its scope, the book offers an essential reference guide for researchers and designers of multi-agent systems, as well as a valuable resource for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-agent systems have attracted great interest due to their potential applications in a variety of areas. In this dissertation, a nonlinear consensus algorithm is developed for networked Euler-Lagrange multi-agent systems. The proposed consensus algorithm guarantees that all agents can reach a common state in the workspace. Meanwhile, the external disturbances and structural uncertainties are fundamentally considered in the controller design. The robustness of the proposed consensus algorithm is then demonstrated in the stability analysis. Furthermore, experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed consensus algorithm. Next, a distributed leader-follower formation tracking controller is developed for networked nonlinear multi-agent systems. The dynamics of each agent are modeled by Euler-Lagrange equations, and all agents are guaranteed to track a desired time-varying trajectory in the presence of noise. The fault diagnosis strategy of the nonlinear multi-agent system is also investigated with the help of differential geometry tools. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through simulations. To further extend the application area of the multi-agent technique, a distributed robust controller is then developed for networked Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems. With the appearance of system uncertainties and external disturbances, a sampled-data feedback control protocol is carried out through the Lyapunov functional approach. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified by numerical simulations. Other than the robustness and sampled-data information exchange, this dissertation is also concerned with the event-triggered consensus problem for the Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems. Furthermore, the sufficient condition for the stochastic stabilization of the networked control system is proposed based on the Lyapunov functional method. Finally, simulation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm. In this dissertation, the cooperative control of networked Euler-Lagrange systems and networked Lipschitz systems is investigated essentially with the assistance of nonlinear control theory and diverse controller design techniques. The main objective of this work is to propose realizable control algorithms for nonlinear multi-agent systems.

Book excerpt: Multi-agent coordination is an emerging engineering It has been inspired by the observations and descriptions of collective behavior in nature, such as fish schooling, birds flocking and insects swarming. The advantages of multi-agent coordination include: it can reduce cost and complexity from hardware platform to software and algorithms; in addition, multi-agent systems are capable of many tasks which could not be effectively performed by a single-robot system, for example, the surveillance task. The book proposes a hierarchical design framework that places uncertainties related to system models in the decentralized control layer (bottom layer) and the ones related to the communication (as well as physical interaction) between the agents in the distributed decision-making layer (top layer). The book shows that the two layers meet the separation principle under certain conditions, so that through the two-layer design framework, any challenges can be resolved independently, and the design complexity will not increase with the level of uncertainties. In addition, in order to solve the problem of energy limitation of agents, this book also studies the event-driven cooperative control of multi-agent systems, which can effectively reduce the energy consumption of agents and increase their operational life span. Bridges the gap for engineers and technicians in the automation industry, including theory and practice Provides a general framework for dealing with various uncertainties in multi-agent cooperative control problems Contains contributions surrounding the development of multi-agent systems control theory

Book excerpt: The paradigm of ‘multi-agent’ cooperative control is the challenge frontier for new control system application domains, and as a research area it has experienced a considerable increase in activity in recent years. This volume, the result of a UCLA collaborative project with Caltech, Cornell and MIT, presents cutting edge results in terms of the “dimensions” of cooperative control from leading researchers worldwide. This dimensional decomposition allows the reader to assess the multi-faceted landscape of cooperative control. Cooperative Control of Distributed Multi-Agent Systems is organized into four main themes, or dimensions, of cooperative control: distributed control and computation, adversarial interactions, uncertain evolution and complexity management. The military application of autonomous vehicles systems or multiple unmanned vehicles is primarily targeted; however much of the material is relevant to a broader range of multi-agent systems including cooperative robotics, distributed computing, sensor networks and data network congestion control. Cooperative Control of Distributed Multi-Agent Systems offers the reader an organized presentation of a variety of recent research advances, supporting software and experimental data on the resolution of the cooperative control problem. It will appeal to senior academics, researchers and graduate students as well as engineers working in the areas of cooperative systems, control and optimization.

Book excerpt: The robustness of various cooperative control schemes on large scale networked systems with respect to heterogeneous communication and coupling delays is investigated. The presented results provide delay-dependent and delay-independent conditions that guarantee consensus, rendezvous, flocking, and synchronization in different classes of multi-agent systems (MAS). All conditions are scalable to arbitrarily large multi-agent systems with non-identical agent dynamics. In particular, conditions for linear agents, for nonlinear agents with relative degree one, and for a class of nonlinear agents with relative degree two are presented. The interconnection topology between the agents is in most cases represented by an undirected graph. The results for nonlinear agents with relative degree one hold also for the more general case of directed graphs with switching topologies. Different delay configurations are investigated and compared. These configurations represent different ways how the delays affect the coupling between the agents. The presented robustness analysis considers constant, time-varying, and distributed delays in order to take different sources of delays into account. The results are applied to several typical applications and simulations illustrate the findings.
