Book excerpt: "In modern and future cellular networks such as Long-Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A)and 5G systems, cooperative communication can be deployed as an efficient method to improvesystem performance and meet the high-speed data transmission needs of multimediaservices. This thesis studies cooperation in the multiple access channel (MAC) setting, which includes the relay channel (RC) setting as a special case. These cooperative settingsapply to uplink transmission in cellular networks and form the basis to improve the widenetwork performance. The thesis proposes a time-division half-duplex scheme for the MAC with transmittercooperation (MAC-TC). The proposed scheme divides each transmission frame into threephases with variable durations. The two user equipments (UEs) partially exchange theirinformation in the first two phases, then cooperatively and coherently transmit to the basestation (BS) in the third phase, i.e., each UE performs a partial decode-forward (pDF) ofthe other UE information. The BS then performs joint decoding using the signals receivedin all three phases. After designing the scheme for the discrete memoryless channel (DMC),the thesis applies it to the Gaussian channel, derives its optimal resource allocations formaximum throughput and studies the outage performance over fading links. Comparedwith existing schemes, the proposed scheme improves throughput and outage performance, which makes it appealing for deployment in future cellular networks by utilizing the device-to-device (D2D) and infrastructure modes in the uplink transmission. The proposed scheme is near capacity-achieving when the cooperative links are strongerthan the direct links. Compared to existing schemes, this scheme achieves the same orbetter spectral efficiency with simpler signals and shorter decoding delay. By analyzingthe KKT optimality conditions for the maximum transmission rate, the thesis shows thatas the inter-user link qualities increase, the optimal scheme moves from no cooperation topartial then to full cooperation, in which the users fully exchange their information. Theoptimal power allocation to achieve the maximum throughput is analytically derived. The thesis further formulates the outage probability of the cooperative scheme overRayleigh fading channels assuming full channel state information (CSI) at receivers andlimited CSI at transmitters. Results show that cooperation can significantly reduce outageprobabilities and achieve the full diversity order despite additional outages at the UEs. Thethesis considers the RC setting in detail and analytically derives the outage performance for the coherent pDF relaying. Results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existingschemes since it employs coherent transmission and joint decoding at the destination.Last, the thesis proposes a MAC with a joint source-destination cooperation (MAC-SDC)scheme that also engages the BS in cooperation by employing quantize-forward relaying. In this scheme, the users exchange their information not only through the cooperativelinks as in the MAC-TC, but also via the feedback links from the BS. Results showachievability improvement especially when the cooperative links are marginally strongerthan direct links. Moreover, for the RC setting, the thesis proves that the proposed schemeasymptotically achieves capacity by reaching the cutset bound as BS power increases." --

Book excerpt: Cooperative and relay communications have recently become the most widely explored topics in communications, whereby users cooperate in transmitting their messages to the destination, instead of conventional networks which operate independently and compete among each other for channel resources. As the field has progressed, cooperative communications have become a design concept rather than a specific transmission technology. This concept has revolutionized the design of wireless networks, allowing increased coverage, throughput, and transmission reliability even as conventional transmission techniques gradually reach their limits. Cooperative and relay technologies have also made their way toward next generation wireless standards, such as IEEE802.16 (WiMAX) or LTE, and have been incorporated into many modern wireless applications, such as cognitive radio and secret communications. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides a systematic introduction to the fundamental concepts of cooperative communications and relays technology to enable engineers, researchers or graduate students to conduct advanced research and development in this area. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides researchers, graduate students, and practical engineers with sufficient knowledge of both the background of cooperative communications and networking, and potential research directions.

Book excerpt: This book presents link-layer cooperative frameworks to improve transmission reliability and network throughput of distributed TDMA MAC protocols in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The main objective of this book is to present link-layer node cooperation schemes to enhance the link-layer performance of vehicular networks, in terms of reliability and system throughput. The authors present approaches proposed for the medium access control (MAC) and node cooperation in VANETs. The authors also cover cooperative ADHOC MAC for point-to-point communication between a pair of source and destination nodes, and cooperative relay broadcasting for broadcast services in this book. The performance of node cooperation frameworks is evaluated via mathematical analysis and computer simulations, in comparison with distributed TDMA MAC protocols without cooperation. The proposed node cooperation frameworks enhance the performance of distributed TDMA MAC and make it more robust to tackle the dynamic networking conditions in VANETs. Furthermore, with cooperation enabled transmission, the performance of distributed TMDA MAC is more suitable to support the wide range of mobile applications and their strict service requirements which is discussed in this book. The proposed node cooperation schemes and distributed cooperation decisions can be extended to wireless systems other than distributed TDMA MAC, such as cellular communication, for vehicular communications introduced in this book. This book is useful for researchers from academia and industry, as well as advanced level students interested in vehicular communication networks. It is also useful for professionals and engineers developing applications that use cooperative wireless communication systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of cooperative communication has been proposed to improve link capacity, transmission reliability and network coverage in multiuser wireless communication networks. Different from conventional point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communications, cooperative communication allows multiple users or stations in a wireless network to coordinate their packet transmissions and share each other's resources, thus achieving high performance gain and better service coverage. According to the IEEE 802.11 standards, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) can support multiple transmission data rates, depending on the instantaneous channel condition between a source station and an Access Point (AP). In such a multi-rate WLAN, those low data-rate stations will occupy the shared communication channel for a longer period for transmitting a fixed-size packet to the AP, thus reducing the channel efficiency and overall system performance. This thesis addresses this challenging problem in multi-rate WLANs by proposing two cooperative Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols, namely Busy Tone based Cooperative MAC (BTAC) protocol and Cooperative Access with Relay's Data (CARD) protocol. Under BTAC, a low data-rate sending station tries to identify and use a close-by intermediate station as its relay to forward its data packets at higher data-rate to the AP through a two-hop path. In this way, BTAC can achieve cooperative diversity gain in multi-rate WLANs. Furthermore, the proposed CARD protocol enables a relay station to transmit its own data packets to the AP immediately after forwarding its neighbour's packets, thus minimising the handshake procedure and overheads for sensing and reserving the common channel. In doing so, CARD can achieve both cooperative diversity gain and cooperative multiplexing gain. Both BTAC and CARD protocols are backward compatible with the existing IEEE 802.11 standards. New cross-layer mathematical models have been developed in this thesis to study the performance of BTAC and CARD under different channel conditions and for saturated and unsaturated traffic loads. Detailed simulation platforms were developed and are discussed in this thesis. Extensive simulation results validate the mathematical models developed and show that BTAC and CARD protocols can significantly improve system throughput, service delay, and energy efficiency for WLANs operating under realistic communication scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of efficient algorithms using cooperation has gained much attention as an emerging technique for the next-generation wireless system. Such a cooperative system allows wireless devices to communicate with each other over relaying. With astute cooperative algorithms, wireless systems are expected to increase sum-rate performance and to support reliable communication. In general, wireless systems can be classified into centralized cellular infrastructures and decentralized ad-hoc multi-hop networks. Cellular networks require high quality channel information to increase sum-rate performance. However, due to finite-rate feedback channels, the base station cannot obtain uncorrupted channel information from mobile stations (MSs), thereby preventing the improvement in the sum-rate performance. On the other hand, multi-hop networks also require high level credit information about neighbor nodes to support reliable communication. Otherwise, traffic is likely to stop at some selfish nodes while being relayed to the destination. The first part of this thesis is motivated with the challenging issue: saving the number of feedback bits while maintaining sum-rate performance. To achieve the objective, this work exploits the cooperation between MSs, known as conferencing, in addition to feedback channels. It has been theoretically shown that cooperating encoders increase the capacity region in multiple-access channels. Similarly, the increase of achievable rate region in broadcast channels with cooperating decoders has been also revealed. In practical systems, the feedback rate is finite as well as cooperation is imperfect. Therefore, it is essential to exploit both cooperation and feedback effectively. Moreover, when multiple MSs are considered, multi-user diversity can be also exploited as yet another independent resource. Using these resources, i.e., feedback, cooperation and user-selection, available in broadcast channels, this thesis introduces the enhancement of the sum-rate performance through rigorous investigation of the relation among the resources. Moreover, this work derives the requirement for the number of feedback bits that achieve the multiplexing gain. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the sum-rate and to verify the derivation. The second part of this thesis focuses on multi-hop networks where each node operates independently without any centralized base stations. This multi-hop network can use cooperation among nodes to increase the total throughput with respect to a single-hop network. However, each node is autonomous and selfish in nature, and thus spontaneous cooperation among nodes is challenged. To accommodate this otherwise selfish nature of multi-hop networks, this thesis proposes a cooperative relay strategy under an energy-limited condition with a game-theoretic perspective. The main focuses are 1) to motivate each node to be cooperative, 2) to decide optimally the amount of cooperation, 3) to analyze equilibrium for the proposed scheme, and thus 4) to maximize the overall throughput. The proposed scheme formulates a Stackelberg game where two nodes sequentially bid their willingness weights to cooperate for their own benefit. Accordingly, all the nodes are encouraged to be cooperative only if a sender is cooperative and alternatively to be non-cooperative only if a sender is non-cooperative. This selective strategy changes the reputations of nodes depending on the amount of their bidding at each game and motivates them to maintain a good reputation so that all their respective packets can be treated well by other relays. Thus, every node forwards other packets with higher probability, thereby achieving a higher overall payoff.
