The highly acclaimed authors of this volume provide a comprehensive and systematic presentation of the theory and practice of community mental health consultation and population-oriented psychiatry. The text outlines recent concepts of collaboration through which mental health specialists develop fruitful partnerships with professional colleagues in a number of health, education, welfare, and religious organizations. In addition to presenting a lucid description of the evolution, development, and current status of the Caplans’ pioneering techniques, many of which have become standard practice in the mental health disciplines, the book clearly articulates the fundamental theoretical principles on which these techniques are based.

Book excerpt: Each year, more than 33 million Americans receive health care for mental or substance-use conditions, or both. Together, mental and substance-use illnesses are the leading cause of death and disability for women, the highest for men ages 15-44, and the second highest for all men. Effective treatments exist, but services are frequently fragmented and, as with general health care, there are barriers that prevent many from receiving these treatments as designed or at all. The consequences of this are seriousâ€"for these individuals and their families; their employers and the workforce; for the nation's economy; as well as the education, welfare, and justice systems. Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions examines the distinctive characteristics of health care for mental and substance-use conditions, including payment, benefit coverage, and regulatory issues, as well as health care organization and delivery issues. This new volume in the Quality Chasm series puts forth an agenda for improving the quality of this care based on this analysis. Patients and their families, primary health care providers, specialty mental health and substance-use treatment providers, health care organizations, health plans, purchasers of group health care, and all involved in health care for mental and substanceâ€"use conditions will benefit from this guide to achieving better care.

Book excerpt: This unique title richly tells the stories of partnership and collaboration. The narrative voice of each chapter derives from the people who tell their story -- immigrants, survivors of torture, mental health experts, urban people, rural people, teachers, doctors, attorneys, students, and international leaders. These authors provide emotionally powerful tales that move, affect, and encourage readers. The collection of narratives is inspired by these individuals, who believe that collaboration can bring authentic mutualism, promise-keeping, and innovation to address the hardest problems we face as a world community. Partnerships for Mental Health: Narratives of Community and Academic Collaboration is about the stories of innovation and collaboration occurring between community and academic partners who have undertaken among the very hardest of problems - such as the care of veterans with ravaging posttraumatic stress disorder; the care of homeless individuals with HIV, addiction, and mental illness; the care of caregivers for Hispanic family members with Alzheimer's disease; the prevention of illness in impoverished vulnerable youth; and the rescue of profoundly mentally ill earthquake survivors. In addition, this title not only also tells the story of identity formation of early-career physicians with a calling to work with distinct populations for whom suffering and stigma are immense, but also the stories of the special bonds that develop and are strengthened between community members and academic colleagues and, ultimately, between friends. A truly indispensable contribution to the literature, this captivating and novel title illustrates and inspires collaboration in order to bring about better health outcomes for people affected by mental health issues in communities throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant body of research demonstrates that people with mental disorders face prejudice and discrimination from other people in society and the health professions as well as systemic and structural disadvantage. Although this structural stigma is recognised as a significant problem for people with mental disorders in the psychological literature, the methods for reducing stigma overwhelmingly focus on changing the attitudes and behaviours of individuals, thereby failing to address the structural disadvantage that perpetuates that stigma. In this thesis, I argue that in order to develop methods that will be effective in reducing stigma, these methods must also produce movement towards positive social change to overcome systemic disadvantage. I propose this change can be achieved by cooperation between people who support mental health advocacy and in particular cooperation between people with mental disorders (and carers), health providers and other members of the public (including government officials) who hold a shared group membership, in what we have termed a cooperative community.

Book excerpt: "Collaboration among providers, both within and across service sectors, has been established as a best practice to address a variety of health issues more effectively. This fact is also true for addiction and mental health services where the co-occurrence of addiction, mental health problems and physical co-morbidity are very common and particularly challenging to address. While Canada has seen substantial momentum at the systems level toward improved collaboration between the mental health and addiction sectors, effective strategies for collaboration at the practice level have not yet been systematically developed, evaluated, documented and shared. This document describes specific models and approaches for collaboration that have had some traction in the research literature, including the model presented by the Canadian Collaborative Working Group on Shared Mental Health Care, the Chronic Care Model and the Tiered Model. These models have several features in common that are specific to collaborative efforts."--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: Second in a series of publications from the Institute of Medicine's Quality of Health Care in America project Today's health care providers have more research findings and more technology available to them than ever before. Yet recent reports have raised serious doubts about the quality of health care in America. Crossing the Quality Chasm makes an urgent call for fundamental change to close the quality gap. This book recommends a sweeping redesign of the American health care system and provides overarching principles for specific direction for policymakers, health care leaders, clinicians, regulators, purchasers, and others. In this comprehensive volume the committee offers: A set of performance expectations for the 21st century health care system. A set of 10 new rules to guide patient-clinician relationships. A suggested organizing framework to better align the incentives inherent in payment and accountability with improvements in quality. Key steps to promote evidence-based practice and strengthen clinical information systems. Analyzing health care organizations as complex systems, Crossing the Quality Chasm also documents the causes of the quality gap, identifies current practices that impede quality care, and explores how systems approaches can be used to implement change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborative Consultation in Mental Health: Guidelines for the New Consultant offers a practical guide for professionals working ‘indirectly’ with clients through consultation with staff. As resources become more scarce in public services and a greater number of people seek mental health interventions, professionals are increasingly called upon to consult with practitioners who conduct face-to-face work with clients. This book provides an essential guide for those who are interested in developing their consultation competence. This book introduces the reader to the principles of a collaborative approach to consultation with practitioners, teams and agencies working in health, education, social care and mental health. The book takes the reader step-by-step through the collaborative consultation process, from preparing and setting up the context for consultation through to communicating effectively to build cooperative partnerships, and evaluating consultation outcomes. Collaborative Consultation in Mental Health guides the consultant in how to apply and develop these principles and practices within group consultation and also addresses common dilemmas and challenges consultants encounter. Collaborative Consultation in Mental Health will appeal to both new and experienced consultants working with adults, children, older people, people with intellectual disabilities and families across a range of contexts.

Book excerpt: The stress that comes with being a first responder has been known to lead to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. However, few clinicians are informed about these health concerns and how to adequately treat them in this population. Therefore, there is an urgent need for practitioners to understand the latest information regarding treatments that will be useful to this specific population. Mental Health Intervention and Treatment of First Responders and Emergency Workers is an essential reference source that focuses on the latest research for diagnosing and treating mental health issues experienced by emergency personnel and seeks to generate awareness and inform clinicians about the unique circumstances encountered by these professionals. While highlighting topics including anxiety disorders and stress management, this book is ideally designed for clinicians, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, practitioners, medical professionals, EMTs, law enforcement, fire departments, military, academicians, researchers, policymakers, and students seeking current research on psychological therapy methods regarding first responders.
