Book Synopsis The North Wind and the Sun by : Dona Herweck Rice
Download or read book The North Wind and the Sun written by Dona Herweck Rice and published by Teacher Created Materials. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Spanish-translated script, act out the story of a bet between the north wind and the sun. The two argue over who is the most powerful and make a bet to see who can get a traveler to remove his cloak with their power. The harsh north wind tries its best with powerful force, but fails. The sun gently shines down warm beams of light, getting the traveler to remove his cloak quickly and showing the north wind that there is more power and strength in gentleness than in force. This charming, Spanish script includes six roles that are written at varying reading levels, supporting differentiation strategies. Teachers can implement differentiation strategies into instruction to assign roles to students based on their individual reading levels. This helpful feature is an easy way for teachers to get all of their students involved and engaged in an activity. All students will gain confidence and feel successful while building fluency, regardless of their current reading ability. This script also features a song and poem relating to the story. Through performing this story together, students will practice valuable skills like interacting cooperatively, reading aloud, and using expressive voices and gestures. All of the features in this dynamic, leveled script make it a great resource for an entire classroom of young readers.

Book excerpt: Shingebiss, a little merganser duck, can always find plenty to eat. In all seasons, the Great Lake is full of fish. But one cold year the lake freezes over, and Shingebiss has to find a way to fish through the thick ice. To do that, he must face the fierce Winter Maker. Gracefully told and illustrated with vigorous woodcuts, this ancient Ojibwe story captures all the power of winter and all the courage of a small being who refuses to see winter as his enemy. This sacred story shows that those who follow the ways of Shingebiss will always have plenty to eat, no matter how hard the great wind of Winter Maker blows.
Download or read book Northwind written by Gary Paulsen and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR). This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning New York Times Bestseller from the survival story master, set along a rugged coastline centuries ago, does for the ocean what Hatchet does for the woods, as it relates the story of a young person’s battle to stay alive against the odds, where the high seas meet a coastal wilderness. When a deadly plague reaches the small fish camp where he lives, an orphan named Leif is forced to take to the water in a cedar canoe. He flees northward, following a wild, fjord-riven shore, navigating from one danger to the next, unsure of his destination. Yet the deeper into his journey he paddles, the closer he comes to his truest self as he connects to “the heartbeat of the ocean . . . the pulse of the sea.” With hints of Nordic mythology and an irresistible narrative pull, Northwind is Gary Paulsen at his captivating, adventuresome best.
Download or read book Cool for You written by Eileen Myles and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grainy and stripped down, this gritty novel traces the downbeat progress of a tough, queer girl growing up in working-class Boston by "a cult figure to a generation of post-punk females forming their own literary avant-garde” (The New York Times). Why can’t I live right now. Because I am not rich, I am not a saint. But I do know this: not all of us were sent here to work. The first published novel of legendary poet and performer Eileen Myles follows a queer female growing up in working-class Boston, straining against the institutions that hold her: family, Catholic school, jobs at a camp, at a nursing home, at a school for developmentally disabled adult males. She wants to be an astronaut. Instead, she becomes a poet and journeys through a series of low-end schools, pathetic jobs, and unmade beds. Schooled by mean and memorable Catholic nuns, this tomboy heroine stumbles and dreams her way through the painful corridors of family, early sexual encounters, and an eye-opening series of jobs caring for the sick and insane--the abandoned wards of the state. This is a book hell-bent on telling the truth about poor women, and how they do (and do not) get out of the hands of their families and the state. Without artifice or pseudonym, protagonist Eileen Myles boldly sets down a rich and graphic account of female experience in this world. Free-ranging and deadpan, tragic and joyful, this is a book about women, gender, class, bodies, escape, and what it means to be “inside.” Never more relevant, and now with an introduction by Chris Kraus. "Eileen Myles is a genius!"--Dorothy Allison
Book Synopsis From the Inside Out by : Royden Loewen
Download or read book From the Inside Out written by Royden Loewen and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 1999-10-12 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Royden Loewen has brought together selections from diaries kept by 21 Mennonites in Canada between 1863 and 1929, some translated from German for the first time. By skillfully comparing and contrasting a wide cross-section of lives, Loewen shows how these diaries often turn the hidden contours of household and community "inside out." The writers featured were ordinary rural people: young women and grandmothers, rural preachers and landless householders. They include a teenaged boy who immigrated from Russia to Manitoba in 1875 as well as a successful merchant, a traveling evangelist, and a devout, conservative church elder. An elderly grandfather recounted the daily circuit of his children's homes, while 19-year-old Marie Schoeder wrote of her literary aspirations, her "secret hope" that some day she would "write things that have a real worth, things that are worth printing, and things that other folks would love to read and pay for." From the Inside Out also contrasts diaries from two distinct Mennonite communities in Canada. The Swiss-American Mennonites in Waterloo County, Ontario, faced rapid urbanization, while the Dutch-Russian Mennonites in southern Manitoba maintained their more rural environment. The diaries mirror their writers' preoccupations with work and weather, but they also reveal a communityís social structure and round of activities such as weddings, funerals, and worship services. In the process of diary-keeping, the writers sought to make sense of a dynamic and often unpredictable world. Reading what they chose to record is to learn much about their culture. Their writings provide glimpses of their lives, their collective mindset, and their history as a people.
