In 2006, I published a printed book called “Strategic Maps Atlas” on War and Strategic Maps. I drew Ethnic Maps of countries such as Near Middle East countries, Iran, Afghanistan among 16 Strategic Maps, which were also published as big posters. With the Arab Spring process, the Middle East has become a major conflict area. In these years, Web-based Interactive Map studies, which were based on Google API applications, started to become widespread. In Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Afghanistan, neighborhoods and cities were constantly changing hands between warring groups and maps were changing. So I started publishing a web-based Middle East Map. According to the political and military developments in the countries, I was constantly updating this map. I was saving important developments in PNG, JPG format and posting them on my website as Picture. These map printouts have become a beautiful archive over time. I decided that this archive would be useful for Researchers and Scientists and published them in a book. I hope that the Middle East War Maps series will contribute to your work.

Book excerpt: This report concludes a two-year study on Iraq's new political leaders and their visions for the future, based on extensive background data and personal interviews with over seventy top leaders since 2003. This portion of the study focuses on leaders brought to power by the election of December 2005 and the formation of a permanent government in 2006. The study finds that rapid and continuous change in political leaders is making it difficult for them to acquire experience and achieve effective government. Also, tensions between outsiders (exiles) who were opponents of Saddam, and insiders, mainly those who served in the previous regime, are generating distrust and making compromise difficult. However, although ethnic and sectarian polarization persists, elections have produced a new political constellation of parties--and militias--with a greater variety of views and constituencies. This development may provide some opportunity for new alignments across the ethnic and sectarian divides. The report suggests that these new political groups need to focus more on issues and interests where they have some common ground, rather than on communal identity. Among these shared issues are economic development, oil legislation, management of water resources and the environment, and the role of religion in the state. Failure to achieve some compromise in these areas could lead to ethnic and sectarian fragmentation or a continued breakdown of government.

How can we investigate the transformation of the nation-state by marking the normally unmarked hyphen in “geo-graphy”? Debunking deterritorialization both as a discourse and as an antiessentialist abstraction, Matthew Sparke offers answers to these questions by examining the contemporary geographies of the United States and Canada. In the Space of Theory details the territorial implications of the Iraq war, NAFTA, welfare reform, constitutional reform, cross-border regional development, and the legal battles of First Nations. In using antiessentialist arguments to elucidate the complexity of these developments, Sparke seeks to ground and critique postfoundational theory itself. He shows how the postfoundational arguments of Homi Bhabha, Arjun Appadurai, Timothy Mitchell, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, Michael Hardt, and Antonio Negri obscure politically important processes of reterritorialization at the same time they deterritorialize diverse theoretical assumptions about the nation-state.
