Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Years of Russian History There are few people in England, probably, who have not read some book or article on Russia, and some aspects of the life of that country are well known to English people; yet it is not too much to say that great ignorance prevails about Russia as a whole. The thing lacking is a knowledge of history, for history alone explains the present by the past, and offers the right vantage ground from which to view the great drama in action at this time. History alone will explain, for example, why Russia is so irresistibly drawn towards Constantinople, and why so much blood has been shed in vain attempts to gain possession of the latchkey to her own front door which the Western Powers have prevented her again and again from getting into her hands. The ancient story of Oleg the Wise hanging his shield on the gate of Byzantium in 911 is a symbol of Russia's policy. A knowledge of, history will also enable the reader to understand the living bond which exists between Russians and Balkan Slavs, who are all members of the same race and of the same Church, and how this bond has always reasserted itself when the weaker brothers had reason to call upon the stronger for help against Turkish Moslems. There are also other vital points which have to be ex plained before Russia's political position can be rightly understood; for the mighty Russian Empire has not been built in a day - from a small beginning and by a number of different processes it has grown to its present dimensions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia So you see that by looking carefully at the place he lived in, She learned a great deal about him without once seeing him. That is just what I want you to do about the Russians. Before we look at them, we will look at their house, Russia, and see what that tells us. It is a very large house as large as all the rest of Europe put together. There is plenty of room for a large nation; even room enough, one would think, for several nations at once. Why Should not one nation go and settle down by itself in one corner, and others in other corners, and never know or care anything about each other? For two reasons. Perhaps you live in a house in a row. If you do, it is also likely that you do not know your next-door neighbour. Yet there is only a wall between you. Why do not you meet? Because you each have all you want on your own side of the wall; all the food you want, and the books you want. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Self-Discovery of Russia HE following pages deal 'with some aspects of the self-discovery of Russia, as these were visible in the summer of 1915. Part of the second section of Theme III has appeared in The Contemporary Review, and Theme IV is substantially as it was published in The Hibbert Journal. Any suggestion of dogmatism in the passages relating to foreign affairs is simply due to the fact that they are based upon conversations with two or three of the highest Russian authorities on that subject. Where many are concerned who have aided me in various particulars it is difficult to make detailed acknowledg ment, but I cannot refrain from expressing my gratitude to a friend through many years, Mr. A. N. Koulomzine, President of the Council of the Empire, without whose interest some of the following experiences would not have been possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia From Within These pages will come as a shock to some very sincere friends of Russia. Those who confound the Russian Nation with the Bureaucratic System by which she is governed, will be inclined to dispute a number of apparently improbable facts which I have cited in order to bring out the character of Contemporary Tsardom. It is my duty to put them on their guard against such generous impulses. This book is not a pamphlet, but an account of the general conditions prevailing at the out break of the Russian Revolution. In these, the personal action of the Executive - Tsar, Princes, Ministers, and Generals - is the capital factor. Analysis of this Execu tive was, therefore, incumbent on me, by juxtaposition of the most typical facts relating to its action. The facts do not make pretty reading. But they are authentic, historical, exact. And it is facts alone that are of importance. The personages themselves are uninterest ing, and I regard them merely as the casual actors of a historic part. From this standpoint, therefore, I discuss them freely, solely in view of the accuracy of the picture I have drawn of contemporary Russian politics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in the 'Eighties, ' Sport and Politics From stars, planets and constellations we passed to the words for night and morning, for day, dawn and darkness; then to things of the country - field and hedgerow, grass and trees - and so by easy transition to the birds and beasts of moorland, marsh and forest. My companion's feelings kindled to enthusiasm as he spoke of the chase, for which hitherto in his busy life he had found scant leisure but he felt rather than knew that this would no longer be the case, for he had not yet realised that the whole Obloquy for the Berlin Treaty would, most unjustly, be cast upon him; that, in fact, his career as a statesman was even now ended. This two hours' walk and talk under the stars drew us nearer together than all our previous intercourse; it was my first Russian lesson and, looking back, it seems to form a fitting 'prelude to the ensuing years during which, in his enforced retirement, shooting was to be his one great solace, I his inseparable companion.
