Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Herbert A. David of Iowa State University will be turning 70 on December 19, 1995. He is reaching this milestone in life with a very distinguished career as a statistician, educator and administrator. We are bringing out this volume in his honor to celebrate this occasion and to recognize his contributions to order statistics, biostatistics and design of experiments, among others; and to the statistical profession in general. With great admiration, respect and pleasure we dedicate this festschrift to Professor Herbert A. David, also known as Herb and H.A. among his friends, colleagues and students. When we began this project in Autumn 1993 and contacted potential contributors from the above group, the enthu siasm was phenomenal. The culmination of this collective endeavor is this volume that is being dedicated to him to celebrate his upcoming birthday. Several individuals have contributed in various capacities to the success ful completion of this project. We sincerely thank the authors of the papers appearing here. Without their dedicated work, we would just have this pref ace! Many of them have served as (anonymous) referees as well. In addition, we are thankful to the following colleagues for their time and advice: John Bunge (Cornell), Z. Govindarajulu (Kentucky), John Klein (Medical U.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics for Environmental Biology and Toxicology presents and illustrates statistical methods appropriate for the analysis of environmental data obtained in biological or toxicological experiments. Beginning with basic probability and statistical inferences, this text progresses through non-linear and generalized linear models, trend testing, time-to-event data and analysis of cross-classified tabular and categorical data. For the more complex analyses, extensive examples including SAS and S-PLUS programming code are provided to assist the reader when implementing the methods in practice.

Book Synopsis Medical Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery by : Krzysztof J. Cios
Download or read book Medical Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery written by Krzysztof J. Cios and published by Physica. This book was released on 2001-01-12 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern medicine generates, almost daily, huge amounts of heterogeneous data. For example, medical data may contain SPECT images, signals like ECG, clinical information like temperature, cholesterol levels, etc., as well as the physician's interpretation. Those who deal with such data understand that there is a widening gap between data collection and data comprehension. Computerized techniques are needed to help humans address this problem. This volume is devoted to the relatively young and growing field of medical data mining and knowledge discovery. As more and more medical procedures employ imaging as a preferred diagnostic tool, there is a need to develop methods for efficient mining in databases of images. Other significant features are security and confidentiality concerns. Moreover, the physician's interpretation of images, signals, or other technical data, is written in unstructured English which is very difficult to mine. This book addresses all these specific features.

Book Synopsis Tests of Independence in a Single 2x2 Contingency Table with Random Margins by : Yuan Yu
Download or read book Tests of Independence in a Single 2x2 Contingency Table with Random Margins written by Yuan Yu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In analysis of the contingency tables, the Fisher's exact test is a very important statistical significant test that is commonly used to test independence between the two variables. However, the Fisher' s exact test is based upon the assumption of the fixed margins. That is, the Fisher's exact test uses information beyond the table so that it is conservative. To solve this problem, we allow the margins to be random. This means that instead of fitting the count data to the hypergeometric distribution as in the Fisher's exact test, we model the margins and one cell using multinomial distribution, and then we use the likelihood ratio to test the hypothesis of independence. Furthermore, using Bayesian inference, we consider the Bayes factor as another test statistic. In order to judge the test performance, we compare the power of the likelihood ratio test, the Bayes factor test and the Fisher's exact test. In addition, we use our methodology to analyse data gathered from the Worcester Heart Attack Study to assess gender difference in the therapeutic management of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by selected demographic and clinical characteristics.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis by : Alan Agresti
Download or read book An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis written by Alan Agresti and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable new edition of a standard reference The use of statistical methods for categorical data has increased dramatically, particularly for applications in the biomedical and social sciences. An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis, Third Edition summarizes these methods and shows readers how to use them using software. Readers will find a unified generalized linear models approach that connects logistic regression and loglinear models for discrete data with normal regression for continuous data. Adding to the value in the new edition is: • Illustrations of the use of R software to perform all the analyses in the book • A new chapter on alternative methods for categorical data, including smoothing and regularization methods (such as the lasso), classification methods such as linear discriminant analysis and classification trees, and cluster analysis • New sections in many chapters introducing the Bayesian approach for the methods of that chapter • More than 70 analyses of data sets to illustrate application of the methods, and about 200 exercises, many containing other data sets • An appendix showing how to use SAS, Stata, and SPSS, and an appendix with short solutions to most odd-numbered exercises Written in an applied, nontechnical style, this book illustrates the methods using a wide variety of real data, including medical clinical trials, environmental questions, drug use by teenagers, horseshoe crab mating, basketball shooting, correlates of happiness, and much more. An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis, Third Edition is an invaluable tool for statisticians and biostatisticians as well as methodologists in the social and behavioral sciences, medicine and public health, marketing, education, and the biological and agricultural sciences.
