Book Synopsis Conventional Pineapple Production in Kenya by : Samuel Ndungu
Download or read book Conventional Pineapple Production in Kenya written by Samuel Ndungu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, pineapple is the second most traded product after bananas. The main producers are Thailand, Philippines, Brazil, China, India, Costa Rica, Nigeria, Kenya, Mexico, and Indonesia. In Kenya pineapple is predominantly grown by large scale producers. There are also small holder producers who grow pineapples in small gardens. Whereas smallholder pineapple production systems do not include mechanization or use of external inputs, the large scale conventional farms are highly mechanized and use a lot of external inputs; pesticides and fertilizers. The book provides information regarding agronomic practices common among large scale conventional producers from land preparation to harvesting and marketing. It also evaluates the worker's rights and other welfare issues, waste management and impact to surrounding communities. This book provides readers with knowledge of pineapple production and its impact to workers on the farms and environment. It will be useful especially for advocates of sustainably produced foods.

Book Synopsis Resilience assessment of avocado and pineapple value chains by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Resilience assessment of avocado and pineapple value chains written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building resilience is important for agrifood systems – such as tropical fruit value chains – to prepare, withstand and adapt to a wide range of risks, including climate and non-climatic shocks and stresses. Resilience is also important to foster transformation of value chains, to both minimize the negative impacts of external risks on the supply chain and also to prevent new operational problems that could compromise the long-term viability of businesses. The FAO-led Building responsible global value chains for the sustainable production and trade of tropical fruits project conducted a comprehensive study during the last quarter of 2022 to identify the main resilience challenges that participants in the avocado and pineapple sectors are facing. The study also aimed to understand the capacities the actors from both value chains possess to prevent, anticipate, absorb, adapt and transform in view of future climate and socioeconomic risks. The report includes the main results from the study, which were validated by the project participants during a workshop held on 6 December 2022. The findings largely draw on literature review and consultations with some of the main actors from the global avocado and pineapple industries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

This book was released on 2022-09-14 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural biostimulants are a group of substances or microorganisms, based on natural resources, that are applied to plants or soils to improve nutrient uptake and plant growth, and provide better tolerance to various stresses. Their function is to stimulate the natural processes of plants, or to enrich the soil microbiome to improve plant growth, nutrition, abiotic and/or biotic stress tolerance, yield and quality of crop plants. Interest in plant biostimulants has been on the rise over the past 10 years, driven by the growing interest of researchers and farmers in environmentally-friendly tools for improved crop performance. Improved crop production technologies are urgently needed to meet the growing demand for food for the ever-increasing global population by addressing the impacts of changing climate on agriculture. This book is of interest to researchers in agriculture, agronomy, crop and plant science, soil science and environmental science.

Book Synopsis Adapting to climate change in the tropical fruit industry: a technical guide for pineapple producers and exporters by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Adapting to climate change in the tropical fruit industry: a technical guide for pineapple producers and exporters written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is impacting global food production systems, making the challenge of feeding the world’s growing population more difficult than ever before. The tropical fruit sector is particularly at risk from the negative impacts of climate change driven by rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and associated challenges such as water stress and increased pests and diseases. This poses significant risks for the long-term sustainability of production and trade of important tropical fruits including pineapple. Recognizing these challenges, the Responsible Fruits Project has developed this technical guide on climate change adaptation for the pineapple export industry. The guide is for producers and exporters of pineapple who are interested in learning more about climate change in the context of their own business systems. It was developed through a consultative process with pineapple companies and producer organizations participating in the Responsible Fruits Project. The purpose of this technical guide is to: • Provide up-to-date information on recent and predicted climate change effects and trends in key pineapple producing and exporting countries. • Identify climate change risks and impacts on the production and trade of pineapple. • Identify adaptation practices and recommendations that may help to address these risks, minimize negative impacts and build resilience. • Share good practices adopted by companies to address specific climate-related production risks in a sustainable manner. • Identify gaps in information, research and technical solutions needed to strengthen the availability and adoption of adaptation practices.
