Book Synopsis Integrating Human Rights into Development Cooperation: The Case of the Lomé Convention by : Karin Arts
Download or read book Integrating Human Rights into Development Cooperation: The Case of the Lomé Convention written by Karin Arts and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights, democracy and governance concerns are prominent elements in the development cooperation policy of the European Community. The relations between the European Community (EC) and 71 developing countries in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) have proved to be a laboratory for developing ideas on these matters, for translating them into binding treaty norms, and for applying them in practice. The experiences gained in the ACP-EC relationship carry special value because they are the product of dialogue and joint decision-making between groups of developed and developing states. Therefore, 25 years of ACP-EC cooperation under the Lomé Convention provide a rich learning ground for anybody involved or interested in (the debate on) linking development cooperation to human rights and to human rights related concerns. This book explores the international law aspects of the subject. It first investigates the general international legal basis for linking development cooperation to human rights, democracy and good governance. Both the negative and positive ways of making such a linking (by punitive and supportive measures) are addressed. The book then delves into the evolution of Lomé treaty norms on the subject, and into the concrete human rights practices that took shape under them. It explores the contributions to and influence of both the EC and ACP states on those treaty provisions and practices. A comprehensive overview is provided of the support measures and sanctions resorted to in response to the human rights situation in ACP countries. The book assesses the overall experiences gained and presents a synthesis of factors that proved to be constraints or conducive to the efforts to integrate human rights fully into ACP-EC development cooperation. The insights gained could well inform similar efforts undertaken by others.

Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Euro-African Co-operation by : Eric C. Djamson
Download or read book The Dynamics of Euro-African Co-operation written by Eric C. Djamson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. E. C. Djamson, a distinguished Ghanaian Lawyer and Diplomat, has put political scientists and students of international law into his debt. His work is an important contribution to the literature of Mro-European co operation. He examines the history of relations between the European Economic Community and the Associated African States; he provides a thorough analysis of the international institutions and of the wider political, economic and legal problems involved in Mro-European co-operation. The author is concerned with the manner in which Mrican sovereign states are now able to enter into relations with Europe on a basis of legal equality. He emphasizes the principles involved in the law of nations; this should comprise, not merely "civilized" law in traditional parlance, but also Mrican customary law. As Dr. Djamson puts it, "the international community can no longer afford to ignore the principles of law peculiar to the so-called Third World . . . after all the 'general principles of law recognized by civilized nations' are not at variance with the basic ideas of law and justice as understood by the newcomers to the international scene. " At the same time, both the new states and the old, established powers must accept those obligations that derive from their being signatories to international agreement. Adherence to the principle of pacta sunt obser vanda does not violate sovereignty, but of itself gives evidence of a country's maturity and ability to co-exist with other sovereign entities. Dr.
Download or read book Africa and Europe written by Amadu Sesay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now over 100 years since the Berlin Conference of 1884 which started the ‘Scramble for Africa’ whereby the various European powers carved up the African Continent between themselves. During the last century the relationship between Africa and Europe has changed dramatically – from a colonial to a post-colonial relationship, with, more recently, new patterns emerging as the Communist bloc has developed increasingly strong links with some countries and as the EEC as an institution has got more involved. First published in 1986, this book explores how the relationship between Africa and Europe has changed over the last hundred years, assesses the current state of relations and discusses how the relationship may develop in the future.
Book Synopsis The External Dimension of the EU’s Migration Policy by : Katharina Eisele
Download or read book The External Dimension of the EU’s Migration Policy written by Katharina Eisele and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the EU has been active in developing a common European immigration policy in cooperation with third countries and in building an “external dimension” of such an EU policy. The linkages between the EU’s external relations and migration policies have influenced the distinct legal positions of third-country nationals (non-EU nationals). This book critically discusses whether the EU’s objective of creating a common EU migration policy can be achieved against the backdrop of a highly fragmented EU framework for migration law and policy, and it argues that it is difficult to speak of one single, unitary group of third-country nationals forming the counterpart to EU citizens.
Book Synopsis The Moral Economy of EU Association with Africa by : Mark Langan
Download or read book The Moral Economy of EU Association with Africa written by Mark Langan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa’s association with the European Union has long been hailed as a progressive model of North-South relations. European officials, in particular, have represented the Africa-EU ‘partnership’ as a pro-poor enterprise in which trade interests are married to development prerogatives. Applying a moral economy perspective, this book examines the tangible impact of Africa-Europe trade and development co-operation on citizens in developing countries. In so doing, it challenges liberal accounts of Europe’s normative power to enable benevolent change in the Global South and illuminates how EU discourse acts to legitimise unequal trade ties that have regressive consequences for ‘the poor’. Drawing upon the author’s own fieldwork, it assesses the difference between norms and the actual impact of EU concessions in relation to: budget support; aid for trade; private sector development (PSD); decent work. It concludes by considering the value of a moral economy approach in the assessment of free trade structures more widely. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of Africanist IPE, European studies, and more broadly international political economy, international development, and international relations.
Book Synopsis The EU in the Global Political Economy by : Finn Laursen
Download or read book The EU in the Global Political Economy written by Finn Laursen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU has become an important international actor. Its internal policies often have repercussions far beyond its borders. It is also increasingly becoming a proactive global actor, defending its interests and projecting its norms and values in both bilateral and multilateral external relations. This volume has a special focus on external economic relations and includes chapters on the Euro, trade policy, and competition policy as well as on specific bilateral relationships. The section on relations with industrialized countries deals with the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan and China, while the section on relations with developing countries has chapters on administrative reform, environmental cooperation, Cuba, Central America and Iran. The book thus gives an up-to-date overview of important aspects of the EU's external relations. With a focus on political economy, it traces the continuous interplay of economics and politics that has characterized the EU's development of a fully-fledged foreign policy. What emerges is a picture of a European Union that is better equipped institutionally to deal with economic, rather than political issues.
