On the other hand, a controlled system is regarded as something stable and predictable. It is often neglected, that the two aspects are very closely related. A perfectly isolated quantum system will not be subject to environmental influences, but this makes it also impossible to interact with it in any manner. Controlling and measuring such a system is impossible and therefore of no technical relevance.Every system used in any technological device therefore must be in contact with its environment. The question, which is the starting point of this thesis is whether it is possible to not only control a system despite of its contact to some environment, but whether there are cases, where this interaction can be necessary, or at least helpful for certain control tasks.The first part of the thesis focuses on such a task, namely the purification of a qubit. Here the environment is essential, in order to serve as an entropy sink. The simplicity of the chosen model allowed us to derive the necessary time for the purification process analytically for arbitrary controls and interactions. This is helpful for architectures, where implementations of various configurations is possible.The second half of the thesis covers more methodogical work. In the example of the qubit reset, we see that the necessary time to perform the task is determined by the coupling between the system and environment. In order to perform such tasks fast, we have to develop a framework, which allows to analyse systems beyond the usual weak-coupling limit. There exists so far no general method for the propagation of such systems, which also allows for thermalisation. The surrogate Hamiltonian method is a promising candidate to capture dynamics beyond the weak-coupling limit and its extension, the stochastic surrogate Hamiltonian, allows for thermalisation. We expand the stochastic surrogate Hamiltonian by introducing a new method of performing stochastic swaps. This method is then tested on a simple example model.

The DCQD method can be utilized to completely determine the quantum dynamical superoperator acting on an open quantum system. In contrast to all other known quantum process tomography (QPT) schemes, this scheme relies on error-detection techniques and does not require any quantum state tomography. By analysis of the number of required experimental configurations and quantum operations in a given Hilbert space, it is demonstrated that this approach is more efficient than all other known QPT schemes. DCQD can be applied, by construction, to the task of partial characterization of quantum dynamics. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the DCQD algorithm can be efficiently used for Hamiltonian identification, and also for simultaneous determination of both the relaxation time T1 and dephasing time T2. Furthermore, it is argued that the DCQD scheme is experimentally implementable in a variety of prominent quantum information processing systems, and it is explicitly shown how it can be physically realized in photonic systems with present day technology. The ability of a quantum system to perform arbitrary or "universal" quantum operations is restricted to its naturally available/controllable interactions. It is shown that quantum systems with an effective exchange interaction can be made operationally universal by utilizing a subspace or a subsystem of the combined principal system and an auxiliary system. Moreover, it is demonstrated that universal fault-tolerant quantum computation can be performed on these systems without utilizing any form of single-qubit control. Characterization and control of open quantum systems are among the central and fundamental problems in quantum physics. A crucial primitive is the characterization of the dynamics of a quantum system that has an unknown interaction with its embedding environment. Another essential task is to control the decoherence of an open quantum system by using naturally available interactions. This thesis addresses the above fundamental problems in two separate parts. In the first part, a general theory for direct and complete characterization of quantum dynamics is introduced. In the second part, a scheme for performing arbitrary quantum operations on spin-based quantum systems is presented. This scheme can be implemented in the presence of environmental noise and faulty quantum operations without need to control the state of spins individually.

The second experiment, while more complex, yields significantly better results, thereby showing the improvement made by the further development of the control techniques. To optimally protect a quantum system against various decoherent errors, it is essential to design methods to acquire knowledge about them. It is in this context that we then develop a robust method for quantum process tomography for measuring relaxation superoperators and Lindblad operators, which is experimentally tested. Finally, we explore both theoretically and experimentally the concatenation of a quantum error correction code with a decoherence-free subspace scheme. Using the two techniques, a 4-qubit quantum system is efficiently protected against a noise containing partial symmetry. To date, this is the first experimental demonstration of such a concatenation scheme.

The successfulness and practicality of this important scientific field rely on the controllability of a quantum system subject to a realistic noisy environment. The environment always leads to unintended dynamics of the system, and thus destroys its coherence and limits its applications. It is therefore important to understand these decoherence mechanisms from first principles, in order to minimize, or even remove, its adverse effect on the quantum system. The study of this open quantum system problem is usually based on some effective paradigms, where the environment is assumed to be "large", such that it can affect the quantum system without any back action. However, due to the demand for a high precision in quantum computation, such an approximate framework becomes questionable. We provide a new theoretical approach to treat this type of open quantum system problem, including the correlated dynamics between the system and the environment, by using a diagrammatic technique in the same spirit as the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function. In this formalism, both the environment and the photonic control are quantized. The dynamics of the system can be evaluated accurately for a time scale of small decoherence, but arbitrary quantum control, relevant to the need for quantum technologies. This offers a way of precise quantum noise calculations. We find how fundamental quantum correlations between the quantum control and quantum environment can arise, and are missing in the existing Master equation approximations. On the other hand, the study of the environment not only provides a better understanding of the decoherence, it also allows applicable designs of quantum operations between different qubit systems. In particular, we engineer a new protocol to entangle two qubits at a distance by projection measurements of their environments, the resonance fluorescence photons. We find exceptional improvements on the probability of success and the rate of entanglement based on the multiphoton environment approach, in comparison with the existing single photon entanglement scheme.
