Given that the control inputs are entirely or partially decoupled between subsystems and no additional constraints are imposed on the interactive variables beyond the coupling constraint itself, the proposed approaches can be used with various types of systems and applications. Further, the book describes how the effects of coupling delays and data losses in device networks are resolved. Book excerpt: Event-based control is a means to restrict the feedback in control loops to event time instants that are determined by a well-defined triggering mechanism. The aim of this control strategy is to adapt the communication over the feedback link to the system behavior. In this thesis, a state-feedback approach to event-based control is extended to systems that are composed of physically interconnected subsystems. The main concern of this thesis is disturbance rejection in interconnected systems, which is supposed to be best accomplished by a continuous state feedback. This consideration leads to the idea that the event-based state-feedback system should approximate the disturbance rejection behavior of a continuous state-feedback system with adjustable precision. Various methods for the event-based control of physically interconnected systems are investigated. In particular, decentralized, distributed and centralized state feedback is studied, which differ with respect to the effort for the communication between the components of the event-based controller over the communication network. The main results concern the design and analysis of event-based state-feedback control methods for physically interconnected systems. For all approaches the disturbance behavior of a continuous state-feedback system is shown to be approximated with adjustable accuracy by the event-based state-feedback system. The novel event-based control methods are tested and evaluated in experiments on a continuous flow process implemented on a large-scale pilot plant.

In this dissertation, motivated by the fact that aperiodic event sampling saves network resources while ensuring system stability, a suite of novel event-sampled distributed near-optimal adaptive control schemes are introduced for uncertain linear and affine nonlinear interconnected systems in a forward-in-time and online manner. First, a novel stochastic hybrid Q-learning scheme is proposed to generate optimal adaptive control law and to accelerate the learning process in the presence of random delays and packet losses resulting from the communication network for an uncertain linear interconnected system. Subsequently, a novel online reinforcement learning (RL) approach is proposed to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation by using neural networks (NNs) for generating distributed optimal control of nonlinear interconnected systems using state and output feedback. To relax the state vector measurements, distributed observers are introduced. Next, using RL, an improved NN learning rule is derived to solve the HJB equation for uncertain nonlinear interconnected systems with event-triggered feedback. Distributed NN identifiers are introduced both for approximating the uncertain nonlinear dynamics and to serve as a model for online exploration. Next, the control policy and the event-sampling errors are considered as non-cooperative players and a min-max optimization problem is formulated for linear and affine nonlinear systems by using zero-sum game approach for simultaneous optimization of both the control policy and the event based sampling instants. Control of large-scale networked systems often necessitates the availability of complex models for the interactions amongst the agents. This dissertation tackles some of the aspects of control and learning in such complex interconnected systems from both theoretic and applied viewpoints. We consider networks as "systems'' and study the advantage they bring into control, estimation, and optimization of various applications such as antagonistic networks, network games, and layered networks. Next, we generalize our viewpoint towards networks as a "system-of-systems'' where each system contains a subsystem and consider the distributed control problem on such hierarchy. This part considers methods for synthesis of linear quadratic controllers for large-scale systems that consist of interactive agents. Lastly, we put forward ideas on online iterative synthesis when the control horizon is limited or data collection is expensive. This part suggests potential remedy to some shortcomings that are incurred due to potential faulty assumptions in the preceding chapters of the thesis. An underlying theme to most parts of the manuscript is how well a network's structure facilitates the machinery of control and optimization of systems that are considered in this category. The functionality of methods in each part is demonstrated via illustrative simulations.
