Book excerpt: The control of feral goats (Capra hircus) and relevant aspects of their biology were studied on Aldabra Atoll, Republic of Seychelles, from October 1993 - May 1994 and November 1994 - May 1995. A total of 832 goats were killed on Aldabra using both the Judas goat technique and traditional hunting methods; a total of 28 Judas goats were used during the entire campaign. The remnant goat populations on Ile Picard (N=13) and Ile Malabar (N=19) were eradicated during the first season. On Grande Terre, a total of 798 (374 M: 424 F) goats were killed. The overall kill rate on Grande Terre was 0.37 goats killed/hour with 1.66 shots fired/goat. A total of 1,042 goats were encountered of which 26.1% escaped. Mean group size was 3.2 with a range of 1 to 20. Judas goat hunting became increasingly important over time with 18.0% (n=85) of goats killed in the first season being in the presence of Judas goats; 42.3% (n=126) of goats killed during the second season were in the presence of Judas goats. The overall kill rate for the project was almost 2 times greater for Judas goat hunting (0.61 goats killed/hr) than traditional hunting (0.32 goats killed/hr); Judas goat hunting was approximately 70% more effective than traditional hunting when compared using multiple linear regression. There was a significant relationship between Judas goat home range size and the number of conspecifics killed. Feral goats on Aldabra may be unique among feral goat populations by apparently not responding to population reductions in a density-dependent manner. For the first season, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) was 0.45; r=0.39 for the second season. Twinning rates were 30.7% and 37.5% in the first and second seasons, respectively. I subjectively estimated approximately 60-120 goats remaining on all of Grande Terre at the end of the project; 84 goats were estimated using the Leslie-Davis removal method of population estimation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multitrophic interactions are now recognised as being of the utmost importance in understanding the complexity of the natural world. However, their complex nature had often been a barrier to their study as they require research teams composed of workers often with very disparate interests. This book therefore takes a multidisciplinary approach to complex interactions across many trophic levels and includes authors from disciplines as diverse as mycology, entomology, nematology, population ecology and theoretical ecology. Throughout, the direct and indirect interactions between organisms from different trophic levels are emphasised in comprehensive reviews, bringing a fresh, collaborative approach to community ecology. The book is ideal for those seeking an overview of our understanding of mulittrophic interactions as well as directions for future research.

Book excerpt: Vertebrate invasive species are important ecologically, socially, and scientifically throughout much of the globe. However, the interdiction and options for management of invasive species are driven by localized regulation at the country or even state level and thus the management of species must be framed within that context. This book is focused around the management of invasive vertebrate species in the United States, although readers will find much of the material broadly applicable to invasive species in other regions. Vertebrate invasive species cause damage to agriculture, property, natural resources, and threaten human health and safety. However, most of these species occur in the United States resulting from human-mediated activities, often being released intentionally. For the first time, the wealth of scientific information about vertebrate invasive species in the United States is summarized and synthesized in a single volume to be easily accessible to ecologists and natural resource managers. With a focus on prominent terrestrial invasive species that have a history of policy and management and highlighting contemporary issues and management, this book consists of 18 chapters written by experts from across the United States. The first section of the book focuses on overarching policy and management topics associated with vertebrate invasive species; including biosecurity threats and risk assessment, policy and regulation, and the economics of their management. The second section provides in-depth reviews of noteworthy invasive mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. After finishing this book, the reader should understand the complexity of managing invasive species, the unique challenges that each new species may present, and the steps forward that may decrease the impact of these species on the environment, human health, and the economy.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plan is the third National Wild Animal Control Plan formulated by the Department of Conservation (DOC) under the Wild Animal Control Act 1977, following plans to control Himalayan thar and possums. These control plans guide DOC's actions in conservation management and protection of natural areas. Any National or Regional Pest Management Strategies that may be produced under the Biosecurity Act 1993 to control goats to protect conservation values shall be consistent with the principles set out in this plan. The planning process for the national plan began in 1990 when Parliament allocated funds to DOC for goat control. The Department has administered these funds through a tagged budget, the National Priority Pool Fund-Feral Goats (NPP-FG). The rules for how these funds will be spent once this plan is formally adopted are described in this national plan. This plan, in draft form, has been used by department staff since 1994. The plan is in three parts: Part 1 lists the objectives of a national feral goat control plan. It describes the general nature of the conservation problems posed by feral goats and the general legal and management responsibilities for dealing with these problems. Part 2 describes the strategies and management solutions to feral goat problems, different control methods, and how to plan, conduct, and monitor the operations funded by this plan. Part 3 lists the goat control opertions conducted since 1990. It also lists and ranks all areas of land administered by the Department of Conservation known to have feral goats that coulb be eradicated or controlled in the future. One measure of success of the plan will be the number of these unfunded operations that join the list of treated areas over the next decade. The plan is constructed so that information on the impacts of goats, the rules on how DOC will control them, and the lists of control operations can be updated as circumstances change. Finally, Implementation of this plan will assist in the achievement of the relevant conservation goal in the Department's Strategic Business Plan. The Natural Heritage Goal 1.1 on Integrated Management aims - "to conserve and restore the ecosystems in protected natural areas on land, through integrated management actions."
