Book excerpt: "Die Design for Extrusion of Plastic Tubes and Pipes" covers this topic from a uniquely practical perspective. The content draws on the author's over 50 years of experience in the plastics processing industry, most recently as head of the successful extrusion die manufacturing company he established in 1995. His approach is oriented toward solving production problems at the design stage using computer aided techniques for design and simulation of the plastic flow. The book provides a step-by-step guide to extrusion die design, with worked examples to illustrate problem solving. It is shown how important melt flow variables (e.g., pressure drop, shear stress, shear rate, temperature variations, and distribution variations, etc.) of key materials are determined using FEM software. The detailed drawings of complete dies for various applications that are provided constitute a rare and valuable resource. Both mono- and multilayer pipes are covered. Using the proven methods and examples from this book, the reader is well-equipped to understand dies for successful manufacture of tubes and pipes of many types. Book excerpt: Sheet and film processes include coating, papermaking, metal rolling, and polymer film extrusion. Products produced by these processes include paper, bumper stickers, plastic bags, windshield safety glass, and sheet metal. The total capitalization of industries that rely on these processes is well over $ 500 billion worldwide. These processes are notorious for being difficult to control. The goal of this book is to present the theoretical background and practical techniques for the identification and control of sheet and film processes. It is explained why many existing industrial control systems perform poorly for sheet and film processes. Identification and control algorithms are described and illustrated which provide consistent and reliable product quality. These algorithms include an experimental design technique that ensures that informative data are collected during input-output experimentation, model identification techniques that produce a process model and an estimate of its accuracy, and control techniques that take into account actuator constraints as well as robustness to model uncertainties. The algorithms covered in this book are truly the state of the art. Variations on some of the algorithms have been implemented on industrial sheet and film processes. Other algorithms are in various stages of implementation. All of the algorithms have been applied to realistic simulation models constructed from industrial plant data; many of these studies are included in this book.

Many SPC training programs are taught by people that are very familiar with statistics but know little about process technology. However, successful implementation of SPC requires an understanding of SPC as well as process know-how. This book, therefore, aims to teach not only the principles of SPC, but also basic injection molding and extrusion process technology. An extensive glossary and index are included as well as lists of commercially available software for SPC and DOC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of extrusion forming tools (dies and calibrators) is a difficult task usually performed by the employment of experimental trial-and-error procedures, which can hinder the performance and cost of the tools, may increase the time to market of new extruded products and limit their complexity. This book provides detailed information on the design of extrusion forming tools. It describes the main problems to be faced when designing dies and calibrators, the most relevant polymer properties to be considered in the design process, the specific problems related to several types of conventional extrusion dies, and recent developments on the design of special dies and process modeling. It is an updated and unique book on the subject, where each chapter is prepared by internationally recognized experts. Having in mind its nature, it is expected to become a useful reference book for higher education students (both undergraduate and graduate ones), teachers, researchers and engineers active in the extrusion industry.

Book excerpt: Why is it important to get to equilibrium and how long does it take? Are there problems running polypropylene profiles on a single screw extruder? Does the job involve compounding color concentrates on a corotating twin screw extruder? This unique reference work is designed to aid operators, engineers, and managers in quickly answering such practical day-to-day questions in extrusion processing. This comprehensive volume is divided into 7 Parts. It contains detailed reference data on such important operating conditions as temperatures, start-up procedures, shear rates, pressure drops, and safety. This reference is a practical guide to extrusion bringing together both the equipment and materials processing aspects. It provides basic and advanced topics about the thermoplastics processing in the extruder, for reference and training. Parts 1 û 3, emphasize the fundamentals, for operators and engineers, of polymeric materials extrusion processing in single and twin screw extruders. Parts 4 û 7 treat advanced topics including troubleshooting, auxiliary equipment, and coextrusion for operators, engineers, and managers. Extensive applications in Part 7 cover such contemporary areas as compounding, blown film, extrusion blow molding, coating, foam, and reprocessing. Each chapter includes review topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to fill a gap between the theoretical studies and the practical experience of the processor in the extrusion of thermoplastic polymers. The former have provided a basis for numerical design of extruders and their components, but generally give scant attention to the practical performance, especially to the conflict between production rate and product quality. In practice extruders are frequently purchased to perform a range of duties; even so, the operator may have to use a machine designed for another purpose and not necessarily suitable for the polymer, process or product in hand. The operator's experience enables him to make good product in unpromising circumstances, but a large number of variables and interactions often give apparently contradictory results. The hope is that this book will provide a logical background, based on both theory and experience, which will help the industrial processor to obtain the best performance from his equipment, to recognize its limitations, and to face new problems with confidence. Mathematics is used only to the extent that it clarifies effects which cannot easily be expressed in words; ifit is passed over, at least a qualitative understanding should remain. The approximate theory will not satisfy the purist, but this seems to the authors less important than a clear representation of the physical mechanisms on which so much of the polymer processing industry depends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of plastics technology, the process of extrusion is widespread and important. It is employed in the compounding and pelletising of plastics materials, in their conversion into products (such as profiles, pipe, hose, sheet, film or bottles) and in the coating of wires, cables, paper, board or foil. A major reason for its use is the screw extruder's ability to melt efficiently and pump continuously large amounts of plastics materials. The understanding of the melting/pumping operation of the extruder and the development of larger and faster-running machines so as to give higher outputs have been given great attention and the results have been widely published. However, the whole manufacturing technology for extruded products has also developed, particularly in recent years. This has occurred not only by the use of modern screw extruders, but also by the incorporation of improved process control systems, the better design of dies and extrudate handling machinery and by the utilisation of improved plastics materials and additives. It is the purpose of this book to present selected topics which contribute to, or exemplify, these developments in extrusion-based processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, hot-melt extrusion (HME) techniques have been shown to exhibit remarkable potential for the manufacture of various pharmaceutical products. HME is an emerging processing technology used primarily for the manufacture of pharmaceutical solid dispersions, combining the advantages of a solvent-free process with fewer production steps making it suitable for easy to scale-up and continuous manufacturing applications. A single unit HME based operation, employing heat and mechanical shear, has displayed a significant potential to retain the stability even of thermo-labile therapeutics e.g., proteins. HME has now explicitly been established from a quality-by-design viewpoint for in-line data monitoring as per the recent guidelines issued by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).This book will focus primarily on the foregoing subject areas and will be of significant interest to a broad/interdisciplinary readership across the industries and academia for, (but not limited to) the following reasons:- Emerging HME processes and applications for multiple drug delivery.- Solid-state engineering, solubility enhancement, controlled release, taste masking and sustained release case studies from a continuous manufacturing view-point.- Means to explore the potential of continuous manufacture of co-crystals for promoting solvent free production methods.- Scale-up case study and issue considerations and studies on the regulatory guidelines (FDA) for continuous manufacturing involving emerging HME techniques.
