Download or read book Free Piston Stirling Engines written by Graham Walker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEFINITION AND NOMENCLATURE A Stirling engine is a mechanical device which operates on a closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle with cyclic compression and expansion of the working fluid at different temperature levels. The flow of working fluid is controlled only by the internal volume changes, there are no valves and, overall, there is a net conversion of heat to work or vice-versa. This generalized definition embraces a large family of machines with different functions; characteristics and configurations. It includes both rotary and reciprocating systems utilizing mechanisms of varying complexity. It covers machines capable of operating as a prime mover or power system converting heat supplied at high tempera ture to output work and waste heat at a lower temperature. It also covers work-consuming machines used as refrigerating systems and heat pumps abstracting heat from a low temperature source and delivering this plus the heat equivalent of the work consumed to a higher tem perature. Finally it covers work-consuming devices used as pressure generators compressing a fluid from a low pressure to a higher pres sure. Very similar machines exist which operate on an open regen erative cycle where the flow of working fluid is controlled by valves. For convenience these may be called Ericsson engines but unfortunate ly the distinction is not widely established and regenerative machines of both types are frequently called 'Stirling engines'.
Book Synopsis Pistons and engine testing by : MAHLE International GmbH
Download or read book Pistons and engine testing written by MAHLE International GmbH and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing demands placed on combustion engines are just as great when it comes to this centerpiece—the piston. Achieving less weight or friction, or even greater wear resistance, requires in-depth knowledge of the processes taking place inside the engine, suitable materials, and appropriate design and manufacturing processes for pistons, including the necessary testing measures. It is no longer possible for professionals in automotive engineering to manage without specific expertise of this kind, whether they work in the field of design, development, testing, or maintenance. This technical book answers these questions in detail and in a very clear and comprehensible way. In this second, revised edition, every chapter has been revised and expanded. The chapter on “Engine testing”, for example, now include extensive results in the area of friction power loss measurement and lube oil consumption measurement.

Book Synopsis Linear Electric Actuators and Generators by : I. Boldea
Download or read book Linear Electric Actuators and Generators written by I. Boldea and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear electric actuators (LEAs) and linear electric generators (LEGs) are widely used electromagnetic devices. This book deals with LEAs that convert electric energy into controlled mechanical motion of limited travel and LEGs that transform mechanical energy into electric energy. Examples range from loudspeakers and microphones to magnetically levitated material transfer in ultraclean rooms. Much of the literature on linear actuators and generators covers the principles of operation and performance calculations of these devices. Little has been published on their control or on detailed design methodologies. This book presents the first unified treatment of the subject, including the construction, operation, control and design of LEAs and LEGs. Chapters describe linear induction, permanent-magnet, linear reluctance, switched reluctance, and linear stepper actuators, as well as various types of linear electric generators. The text is amply illustrated with numerous design examples.
Download or read book Engine Testing written by Anthony Martyr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the large and scattered body of information on the theory and practice of engine testing, to which any engineer responsible for work of this kind must have access. Engine testing is a fundamental part of development of new engine and powertrain systems, as well as of the modification of existing systems. It forms a significant part of the practical work of many automotive and mechanical engineers, in the auto manufacturing companies, their suppliers suppliers, specialist engineering services organisations, the motor sport sector, hybrid vehicles and tuning sector. The eclectic nature of engine, powertrain, chassis and whole vehicle testing makes this comprehensive book a true must-have reference for those in the automotive industry as well as more advanced students of automotive engineering. * The only book dedicated to engine testing; over 4000 copies sold of the second edition * Covers all key aspects of this large topic, including test-cell set up, data management, dynamometer selection and use, air, thermal, combustion, mechanical, and emissions assessment * Most automotive engineers are involved with many aspects covered by this book, making it a must-have reference

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program, written in FORTRAN IV for the IBM 360 computer, for the reduction of data from free piston engine tests is described, along with a brief description of the engine and its instrumentation, and the derivation of the various equations used. Input data are in the form of punched cards, and output, in tabulated form, is on the standard line printer. At the option of the user, some of the more important output data may, in addition, be plotted on the EAI dataplotter. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses all aspects of advanced engine technologies, and describes the role of alternative fuels and solution-based modeling studies in meeting the increasingly higher standards of the automotive industry. By promoting research into more efficient and environment-friendly combustion technologies, it helps enable researchers to develop higher-power engines with lower fuel consumption, emissions, and noise levels. Over the course of 12 chapters, it covers research in areas such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion and control strategies, the use of alternative fuels and additives in combination with new combustion technology and novel approaches to recover the pumping loss in the spark ignition engine. The book will serve as a valuable resource for academic researchers and professional automotive engineers alike.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engine Systems by : Lino Guzzella
Download or read book Introduction to Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engine Systems written by Lino Guzzella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal combustion engines still have a potential for substantial improvements, particularly with regard to fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility. These goals can be achieved with help of control systems. Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) addresses these issues by offering an introduction to cost-effective model-based control system design for ICE. The primary emphasis is put on the ICE and its auxiliary devices. Mathematical models for these processes are developed in the text and selected feedforward and feedback control problems are discussed. The appendix contains a summary of the most important controller analysis and design methods, and a case study that analyzes a simplified idle-speed control problem. The book is written for students interested in the design of classical and novel ICE control systems.
