Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Physiology and Pathology of the Circulation of the Blood It has not yet explained the epicycles, as I may be allowed to call the partial systems, and various relations of parts, both fluid and solid, on which the anomalies of the body, the nature of diseases, and the operations of medicines must depend. Had Newton only discovered the general operation of gravity upon all matters, and barely hinted that the motion of the planets must depend upon it, philosophers had then understood the system of the world nearly as well as we do now the system of the body." A conviction of the truth of the opinions expressed in the preceding quotations, led me, many years since, to engage in an attempt to elucidate some points in the physiology of the circulation of the blood, and to apply that great principle more extensively to the illustration and explanation of pathological phenomena. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histology of the Blood: Normal and Pathological The pathology of the blood, especially of the cor puscular elements, though one of the most interesting, is certainly one of the most confusing, of all departments of pathology, and to those who have not given almost undivided attention to this subject it is extremely difficult to obtain a comprehensive and accurate view of the blood in disease. It is for this reason that we welcome the present work in its English garb. Professor Ehrlich by his careful and extended observations on the blood has qualified himself to give a bird's-eye view of the subject, such as few if any are capable of offering; and his book now so well translated by Mr Myers must remain one of the classical works on blood in disease and on blood diseases, and in introducing it to English readers Mr Myers makes an important contribution to the ao curate study of hmmal pathology in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Medicine, Vol. 4: Its Theory and Practice, in Original Contributions by American and Foreign Authors; Diseases of the Circulatory System, Diseases of the Blood, Diseases of the Spleen, Thymus and Lymph-Glands Introduction - The problem for a physician to solve when confronted with a case of circulatory disease is, Which of the many factors in the maintenance of the circulation are at fault? Briefly stated, he must determine if there is a faulty distribution of the blood, viz., in the peripheral vessels, in the splanchnic area or in the pulmonary circula tion; if the pure hydraulics of the circulation are maintained and if its accomplishment is fulfilled without an expenditure of more than a normal amount of work by the heart. Some of these problems have their solution in phenomena purely physiological, some pathological, and some are still In the realm of theoretical speculation. Where physi ology and pathology fail, the diagnostician can appeal only to recorded clinical symptomatology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clinical Pathology of the Blood The following translation was authorised by Professor v. Limbeck shortly before his premature death, and represents the latest German edition save for the fact that Dr. Freund's chapter, which deals chiefly with the physio logical aspects of blood 'coagulation, and certain other passages have been considerably condensed. Professor V. Limbeck had a world-wide reputation as an authority upon all points connected with the physiology, pathology, and chemistry of the blood, and his early death was a heavy blow to every one interested in these subjects. He was a man of singularly engaging nature and of enormous capacity for work, and notwithstanding the many calls upon his time, was ever ready to help any who, like ourselves, had the inestimable' privilege of working with him. In addition to this Professor v. Limbeck combined many qualities which are not always associated with great learning. He was generously appreciative of the work done by others whilst on those rare occasions on which he was shown to be at fault, he was the first to admit his error. A touch of quiet humour and gentle satire also character ised him, as may be seen in the few but telling words with which he dismisses the plausible theory of Bunge, and the preposterous one of Neusser. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Discovery of the Circulation of the Blood A desire for information in regard to the history of a science, as naturally follows its study as does the wish to know something of the countries through which we travel, or of the biography of authors whose works have instructed or amused us. To medical men the satisfaction of this desire is attend ed with something more than the mere gratification of curiosity; lessons of great practical value are to be derived from the study of the history of med icine. As we observe the slow and uncertain man ner in which our present knowledge has been at tained, we shall feel that our progress is likely also to be gradual, and that the great discoveries of the future are to be made, like those of the past, by patient and long continued observation, judicious experiment and careful generalization. As we see the doctrines of great teachers, which were received by their followers as infallible, shown one after the other to be erroneous, we may learn caution in regard to resting our efforts with the present attain ments of science. For these and many other rea sons the study of the history of medicine is valua ble to the practitioner, and has always been re commended to the student, by those best qualified to judge, as an important part of his professional education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blood Supply to the Heart: In Its Anatomical and Clinical Aspects This monograph on the blood supply to the heart in its anatomical and clinical aspects is the outcome of investigations which Dr. Gross commenced several years ago in the laboratories of the Royal Victoria Hospital and of McGill University. They formed originally part of a general study dealing with structural evolution of organs in the various age periods in its relation to normal function and disease. It soon became apparent to me that in these researches Dr. Gross had, with rare industry and ingenuity, gone far beyond the original questions and that the results of his work touch upon a larger number of problems which are not only of anatomical, but also of great clinical interest and importance. The extent of the work and the accumulated material and illustrations had also gone far beyond the original scope of a paper and it was therefore considered advisable to publish it in monograph form. This allowed a further extension and inclusion of a thorough critical review, and incorporation of previous literature - by itself a useful undertaking. The work, therefore, places before us: First: A complete description of the arterial and venous blood supply to the normal heart with a statistical study of its variations. Second: The blood supply to the neuromuscular system of His and its pathological and clinical significance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvey's Views on the Use of the Circulation of the Blood It was in 1628, the year of his fiftieth birthday, that Harvey published, at frankfort-ou-the-main, his fa mous Latin treatise entitled: An Anatomical Exer cise on the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals. A reader of to-day will be inclined to skim rapidly over the Introduction to this treatise and over much in the last three chapters; and probably he will take only a languid interest in the two brief Latin treatises which Harvey published in defense of the circulation, after more than twenty years of silence, In his seventy-first year, at Cambridge In 1649; these treatises being en titled: Two Anatomical Exercises on the Circulation of the Blood, to Johannes Riolanus, Junior, of Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Discovery of the Circulation of the Blood The name of Herophilus ought to be familiar to all students of anatomy, as many parts of the human body, such as the Choroid Plexus, the Torcular Herophili, the Calamus Scripto rius, the Duodenum, etc., were first described by him. The most important contribution that he made to our knowledge of the vascular system was the demonstration of the isochronism of the pulsations of the arteries and of the beating of the heart, and of the latter being the cause of the former, a phenomena that had already been imperfectly referred to by Hippocrates and Aris totle. Herophilus noticed also the difference in the thickness of the walls of the arteries and of the veins, and described the vessels connecting the heart and the lungs, distinguishing the pul monary artery from the pulmonary vein, designating the former as the arterial vein and the latter as the venous artery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essentials of Chinese Medicine is a text book intended for international students who wish to gain a basic understanding of Chinese Medicine (CM) at the university level. The idea of writing such a text was originated from the Sino-American Consortium for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine (SACACM), which was founded in February 2000. In 1995, the British Hong Kong Administration set up a Preparatory Committee for the Development of Chinese Medicine to look into ways of bringing Chinese medical practice and herbal trade under proper control and r- ulation. After the reuni?cation of Hong Kong with mainland China in 1997, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continued the efforts to uplift the practice of CM to a fully professional level through legislation. To help bring up a new generation of professional CM practitioners, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) obtained approval from the Government’s univ- sity funding authority to develop a School of Chinese Medicine to prepare students who will meet the future professional requirements through public examinations. In order to establish itself quickly as a rigorous provider of university level CM education, HKBU sought alliance with eight major CM universities in the Chinese Mainland, and one US university which was interested in developing CM edu- tion within its medical college. As a result, the Consortium known as SACACM was formed, with ten founding institutions from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Sh- dong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Heilongjiang, Hong Kong, and the United States.
