Book excerpt: This volume of contributions pays tribute to the life and work of Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The articles it contains were born out of the ICMC Summer Meeting on Differential Equations – 2014 Chapter, also dedicated to de Figueiredo and held at the Universidade de São Paulo at São Carlos, Brazil from February 3-7, 2014. The contributing authors represent a group of international experts in the field and discuss recent trends and new directions in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems. Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo has had a very active scientific career, publishing 29 monographs and over one hundred research articles. His influence on Brazilian mathematics has made him one of the pillars of the subject in that country. He had a major impact on the development of analysis, especially in its application to nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems throughout the entire world. The articles collected here pay tribute to him and his legacy and are intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics and related areas who are interested in nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations and systems.

The output of this Symposium was published in a series of three separate volumes, comprising approximately a third of Professor Chern’s total publications up to 1979. Later, a fourth volume was published, focusing on papers written during the Eighties. This second volume comprises selected papers written between 1932 and 1965.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating volume investigates the structure of eigenvectors and looks at the number of their sign graphs ("nodal domains"), Perron components, and graphs with extremal properties with respect to eigenvectors. The Rayleigh quotient and rearrangement of graphs form the main methodology. Eigenvectors of graph Laplacians may seem a surprising topic for a book, but the authors show that there are subtle differences between the properties of solutions of Schrödinger equations on manifolds on the one hand, and their discrete analogs on graphs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph covers the theory of finite and infinite matrices over the fields of real numbers, complex numbers and over quaternions. Emphasizing topics such as sections or truncations and their relationship to the linear operator theory on certain specific separable and sequence spaces, the authors explore techniques like conformal mapping, iterations and truncations that are used to derive precise estimates in some cases and explicit lower and upper bounds for solutions in the other cases. Most of the matrices considered in this monograph have typically special structures like being diagonally dominated or tridiagonal, possess certain sign distributions and are frequently nonsingular. Such matrices arise, for instance, from solution methods for elliptic partial differential equations. The authors focus on both theoretical and computational aspects concerning infinite linear algebraic equations, differential systems and infinite linear programming, among others. Additionally, the authors cover topics such as Bessel’s and Mathieu’s equations, viscous fluid flow in doubly connected regions, digital circuit dynamics and eigenvalues of the Laplacian.

In the first contribution, the singularities of the solutions of several classes of non-linear partial differential equations are investigated. Applications concern the Monge-Ampère equation, quasi-linear systems arising in fluid mechanics as well as integro-differential equations for media with memory. There follows an article on L_p-L_q decay estimates for Klein-Gordon equations with time-dependent coefficients, explaining, in particular, the influence of the relation between the mass term and the wave propagation speed. The next paper addresses questions of local existence of solutions, blow-up criteria, and C^8 regularity for quasilinear weakly hyperbolic equations. Spectral theory of semibounded selfadjoint operators is the topic of a further contribution, providing upper and lower bounds for the bottom eigenvalue as well as an upper bound for the second eigenvalue in terms of capacitary estimates. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to Riemannian geometry, the geometry of curved spaces. Its main theme is the effect of the curvature of these spaces on the usual notions of geometry, angles, lengths, areas, and volumes, and those new notions and ideas motivated by curvature itself. Isoperimetric inequalities--the interplay of curvature with volume of sets and the areas of their boundaries--is reviewed along with other specialized classical topics. A number of completely new themes are created by curvature: they include local versus global geometric properties, that is, the interaction of microscopic behavior of the geometry with the macroscopic structure of the space. Also featured is an ambitious "Notes and Exercises" section for each chapter that will develop and enrich the reader's appetite and appreciation for the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal Shape Design is concerned with the optimization of some performance criterion dependent (besides the constraints of the problem) on the "shape" of some region. The main topics covered are: the optimal design of a geometrical object, for instance a wing, moving in a fluid; the optimal shape of a region (a harbor), given suitable constraints on the size of the entrance to the harbor, subject to incoming waves; the optimal design of some electrical device subject to constraints on the performance. The aim is to show that Optimal Shape Design, besides its interesting industrial applications, possesses nontrivial mathematical aspects. The main theoretical tools developed here are the homogenization method and domain variations in PDE. The style is mathematically rigorous, but specifically oriented towards applications, and it is intended for both pure and applied mathematicians. The reader is required to know classical PDE theory and basic functional analysis.

This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of a Riemannian manifold can be described in terms of vibrating membranes as well as quantum energy eigenstates. This book is an introduction to both the local and global analysis of eigenfunctions. The local analysis of eigenfunctions pertains to the behavior of the eigenfunctions on wavelength scale balls. After re-scaling to a unit ball, the eigenfunctions resemble almost-harmonic functions. Global analysis refers to the use of wave equation methods to relate properties of eigenfunctions to properties of the geodesic flow. The emphasis is on the global methods and the use of Fourier integral operator methods to analyze norms and nodal sets of eigenfunctions. A somewhat unusual topic is the analytic continuation of eigenfunctions to Grauert tubes in the real analytic case, and the study of nodal sets in the complex domain. The book, which grew out of lectures given by the author at a CBMS conference in 2011, provides complete proofs of some model results, but more often it gives informal and intuitive explanations of proofs of fairly recent results. It conveys inter-related themes and results and offers an up-to-date comprehensive treatment of this important active area of research.
