Part A consists of eight sections and deals with multiple decision (selection and ranking) procedures. Part B contains some distribution theory which arises in these selection and ranking problems and some results relating to the moments of certain statistics. An overall description of the several tables that have been constructed is also given in this part. Part C includes on a variety of topics among which are (i) the distribution of linear functions of ordered correlated normal random variables, (ii) order statistics from the logistic distribution, (iii) inequalities relating to binomial and gamma distributions, (iv) the moments of traces of two matrices that arise in three different situations for complex multivariate normal populations and (v) life testing sampling plans for distributions having an increasing or a decreasing failure rate. Book excerpt: Multiple Decision Procedures: Theory and Methodology of Selecting and Ranking Populations provides an encyclopedic coverage of the literature in the area of ranking and selection procedures, summarizing and surveying in a unified manner a majority of more than 600 main references in the bibliography. It also deals with related problems, such as the estimation of unknown ordered parameters. A separate chapter is devoted to information about several tables available in the literature for carrying out various specific procedures. Examples are given in another chapter illustrating applications of these procedures in various practical contexts. Although several books have appeared to date in this area, many of them deal with specific aspects of the field and a limited number of topics. This book contains substantial material not discussed in other books. Audience: this book can serve as a text for a graduate topics course in ranking and selection (as it has done at Purdue University for more than 30 years). It can also serve as a reference for researchers and practitioners in fields such as agriculture, industry, engineering, and behavioral sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Survey of Combinatorial Theory covers the papers presented at the International Symposium on Combinatorial Mathematics and its Applications, held at Colorado State University (CSU), Fort Collins, Colorado on September 9-11, 1971. The book focuses on the principles, operations, and approaches involved in combinatorial theory, including the Bose-Nelson sorting problem, Golay code, and Galois geometries. The selection first ponders on classical and modern topics in finite geometrical structures; balanced hypergraphs and applications to graph theory; and strongly regular graph derived from the perfect ternary Golay code. Discussions focus on perfect ternary Golay code, finite projective and affine planes, Galois geometries, and other geometric structures. The book then examines the characterization problems of combinatorial graph theory, line-minimal graphs with cyclic group, circle geometry in higher dimensions, and Cayley diagrams and regular complex polygons. The text discusses combinatorial problems in finite Abelian groups, dissection graphs of planar point sets, combinatorial problems and results in fractional replication, Bose-Nelson sorting problem, and some combinatorial aspects of coding theory. The text also reviews the enumerative theory of planar maps, balanced arrays and orthogonal arrays, existence of resolvable block designs, and combinatorial problems in communication networks. The selection is a valuable source of information for mathematicians and researchers interested in the combinatorial theory.

Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us.

Book excerpt: The theory and practice of decision making involves infinite or finite number of actions. The decision rules with a finite number of elements in the action space are the so-called multiple decision procedures. Several approaches to problems of multi ple decisions have been developed; in particular, the last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth of this field. An important aspect of the recent contributions is the attempt by several authors to formalize these problems more in the framework of general decision theory. In this work, we have applied general decision theory to develop some modified principles which are reasonable for problems in this field. Our comments and contributions have been written in a positive spirt and, hopefully, these will an impact on the future direction of research in this field. Using the various viewpoints and frameworks, we have emphasized recent developments in the theory of selection and ranking ~Ihich, in our opinion, provides one of the main tools in this field. The growth of the theory of selection and ranking has kept apace with great vigor as is evidenced by the publication of two recent books, one by Gibbons, Olkin and Sobel (1977), and the other by Gupta and Panchapakesan (1979). An earlier monograph by Bechhofer, Kiefer and Sobel (1968) had also provided some very interest ing work in this field.

Book excerpt: Research on selection and ranking problems and multivariate distribution theory has been carried out on several aspects of the problem. The significant results obtained relate to univariate and multivariate populations using parametric as well as non-parametric procedures. Some work has been done in the area of sequential selection procedures under the subset selection formulation. Also a beginning has been made for selection from populations which are partially ordered in some sense with respect to a known population G.A few results have been obtained using a decision-theoretic approach to the problem of selection and ranking. Currently the attention is being focused on the construction of decision rules under certain 'optimality' conditions. All these problems were examined under the subset selection formulation. Book excerpt: The report makes some contributions to the subset selection procedures - both for the fixed sample and the sequential case. Chapter 1 deals with some subset selection procedures for binomial populations in terms of the entropy functions, which is different from the usual selection problem in terms of the success probabilities. In Chapter 2, some fixed sample optimal subset selection procedures are discussed for model I and II problems in the analysis of variance in treatments versus control, and a method for constructing some subset selection procedures is derived. Chapter 3 discusses a method for constructing some sequential subset selection procedures and some optimal sequential subset selection procedure in treatments versus control. An upper bound on the expected sample size for Bechhofer-Kiefer-Sobel sequential selection procedure with indifference zone approach is also derived. (Author).
