Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions by Members of the Department of Anatomy of the Tulane University of Louisiana, Vol. 1: 1910-1915 In the absence of the cutaneous supply to the hand from the ulnar and median nerves, the distribution of the radial the only sensitive area remaining upon the hand) appeared to conform quite closely to the average or normal distribution of this nerve. On the dorsum of the hand, the area extended slightly upon the ulnar side of the first phalanx of the middle finger (fig. 1a) instead of to the mid-line of this phalanx, and thence curved toward the ulnar side of the dorsum rather than toward the radial side, as does the average or normal area (fig. However, judging from the subsequent studies, this apparent abnormality of the area is considered as probably due in part to the compensatory extension of twigs from the radial already begun during the time between the injury and the time the first study (fig. 1) was made, and partly, from above, to the terminal twigs of the lateral cutaneous anti brachial nerve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions From the Department of Anatomy, 1922-1923, Vol. 8 Of the eighty-two guinea - pigs used in this study seventy-four were reared in the laboratory, from sixteen females and two males obtained locally. These breeding animals were all large and healthy. The other eight were all adults over 700 grams obtained from other local sources, and are represented by the following body weights: 790, 835, 910, and 927 grams (males) and 807, 810, 852, and 997 grams (females). Four of the females in the upper portion of the series were found at autopsy to be in early stages of pregnancy. These weighed as follows: 807, 852, 907, and 997 grams. The pregnancies apparently did not alter to any notable extent the weight of any of the organs studied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Still later, alternate parts of the two tracts degenerate while other parts continue to develop. These enlarged segments are joined together through their medial rami and form a single ventral artery which Sterzi terms the tractus arteriosus ventralis, and which is the anterior spinal artery 371 THE ANATOMICAL EECOED, VOL. 8, NO. 7 JOXY, 1914 of most authors. From the primitive tract, dorsal rami enter the substance of the cord. Each dorsal ramus forms a loop and gives rise to a vein, which courses ventrally and enters the primitive sulcus. Later other vessels extend into the cord from the lateral, and still later from the dorsal surface. The dorsal radical arteries, where they divide, form many small longitudinal capillaries just ventral to the points of emergence of the dorsal nerve roots. From these capillaries there is formed later a longitudinal artery on either side of the cord, in this plane (tractus arteriosus lateralis). The vessels entering the cord are f rst solid and later become hollow. Evans ('09) shows by a series of injected pigs the early development of anterior spinal artery In his figures the mid-ventral surface of the cord is shown to be free from vessels until the embryos are 8.5 mm. in length, and the mid-posterior surface until after the pigs are between 8 and 10.5 mm. in length. He does not take up the later stages. MATERIAL AND METHODS For a study of this nature, injected embryos are indispensable, and they are best injected while living, with warm india ink diluted one-half with weak ammonia water. It is preferable to inject through the umbilical artery rather than through the umbilical vein, because the arteries are less readily ruptured and because the route between them and the vessels of the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique biographical review of the global contributors to field of anatomy Knowledge of human anatomy has not always been an essential component of medical education and practice. Most European medical schools did not emphasize anatomy in their curricula until the post-Renaissance era; current knowledge was largely produced between the 16th and 20th centuries. Although not all cultures throughout history have viewed anatomy as fundamental to medicine, most have formed ideas about the internal and external mechanisms of the body—influences on the field of anatomy that are often overlooked by scholars and practitioners of Western medicine. History of Anatomy: An International Perspective explores the global and ancient origins of our modern-day understanding of anatomy, presenting detailed biographies of anatomists from varied cultural and historical settings. Chapters organized by geographic region, including Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, review the lives of those that helped shape our current understanding of the human form. Examining both celebrated and lesser-known figures, this comprehensive work examines their contributions to the discipline and helps readers develop a global perspective on a cornerstone of modern medicine and surgery. Offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary examination of the history of anatomy Traces the emergence of modern knowledge of anatomy from ancient roots to the modern era Fills a gap in current literature on global perspectives on the history of anatomy Written by an internationally recognized team of practicing physicians and scholars History of Anatomy: An International Perspective is an engaging and insightful historical review written for anatomists, anthropologists, physicians, surgeons, medical personnel, medical students, health related professionals, historians, and anyone interested in the history of anatomy, surgery, and medicine.
