Book excerpt: The 3-D, turbulent flowfield produced by a propeller operating in the wake of a variable mesh disk has been studied with numerical solutions of the Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations and by detailed experiments in a wind tunnel. The mesh variations of the upstream disk were chosen to produce a simulation of the wake of a streamlined, axisymmetric body with a single, streamlined appendage. Comparisons of measurements and preliminary numerical predictions show good agreement for the velocity profiles behind the propeller. The 3-D flow in the junction between a cylindrical appendage and a hull can produce separation of the trailing portion of the appendage and produces a momentum deficient 3-D boundary layer that is more prone to detachment than the 2-D regions away from the appendage. Detailed measurements of the zero-pressure-gradient boundary layer upstream of an appendage of interest have been made. A procedure has been developed for reducing blockage effects in the test wind tunnel. Keywords: Propeller flowfields; Appendage flows; Numerical solutions of turbulent flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces the fundamentals of fluid-mechanics, momentum theories, vortex theories and vortex methods necessary for the study of rotors aerodynamics and wind-turbines aerodynamics in particular. Rotor theories are presented in a great level of details at the beginning of the book. These theories include: the blade element theory, the Kutta-Joukowski theory, the momentum theory and the blade element momentum method. A part of the book is dedicated to the description and implementation of vortex methods. The remaining of the book focuses on the study of wind turbine aerodynamics using vortex-theory analyses or vortex-methods. Examples of vortex-theory applications are: optimal rotor design, tip-loss corrections, yaw-models and dynamic inflow models. Historical derivations and recent extensions of the models are presented. The cylindrical vortex model is another example of a simple analytical vortex model presented in this book. This model leads to the development of different BEM models and it is also used to provide the analytical velocity field upstream of a turbine or a wind farm under aligned or yawed conditions. Different applications of numerical vortex methods are presented. Numerical methods are used for instance to investigate the influence of a wind turbine on the incoming turbulence. Sheared inflows and aero-elastic simulations are investigated using vortex methods for the first time. Many analytical flows are derived in details: vortex rings, vortex cylinders, Hill's vortex, vortex blobs etc. They are used throughout the book to devise simple rotor models or to validate the implementation of numerical methods. Several Matlab programs are provided to ease some of the most complex implementations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prediction of unsteady flow field in turbine blades as well as in the turbomachinery stages is now an affordable item, and is required by the reduced margin for increasing efficiency, stability and life of propulsion components, The numerical tools are now capable to run within reasonable time 3D unsteady calculation for full stage, and the new techniques on the computation and parallel computer allow the improvements of results in terms of cost and accuracy, Despite these advantages many questions remain open and the physical modelling joint with the numerical improvements is still a challenge if it has to produce usable results, compared with the experiments. Aim of this paper is the report on some experience and the attempt to give some answer on that challenge, presenting results of a recent activity on modelling side compared with experiments as well, A full-3D unstructured solver based on an upwind TVD finite volume scheme has been developed and applied to the simulation of an unsteady turbine stage, The development of the numerical strategy is discussed with particular concern on the validation of the unsteady model through a comparison against experiments, NISRE approach and a 3D steady stage computation, The present work considers the application of the fully unstructured hybrid solver for internal viscous flows, as well, The multiblock version of the solver developed for turbine is considered, because of the highly improved performance as compared to the single domain version of the code, Moreover, the high numerical costs involved in 3D unsteady computations required the development of a new parallel single program multiple-data version of the numerical solver. The results compare favorably with a set of time averaged and unsteady experimental data available for the turbine stage under investigation, which is representative of a wide class of aero-engines.

Book excerpt: The Particle Image Velocimetry is undoubtedly one of the most important technique in Fluid-dynamics since it allows to obtain a direct and instantaneous visualization of the flow field in a non-intrusive way. This innovative technique spreads in a wide number of research fields, from aerodynamics to medicine, from biology to turbulence researches, from aerodynamics to combustion processes. The book is aimed at presenting the PIV technique and its wide range of possible applications so as to provide a reference for researchers who intended to exploit this innovative technique in their research fields. Several aspects and possible problems in the analysis of large- and micro-scale turbulent phenomena, two-phase flows and polymer melts, combustion processes and turbo-machinery flow fields, internal waves and river/ocean flows were considered.

Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in the analyses of three-dimensional flow over rotating wind turbine blades. Systematic studies for wind turbine rotors with different sizes were carried out numerically employing three different simulation approaches, namely the Euler, URANS and DDES methods. The main mechanisms of the lift augmentation in the blade inboard region are described in detail. The physical relations between the inviscid and viscous effects are presented and evaluated, emphasizing the influence of the flow curvature on the resulting pressure distributions. Detailed studies concerning the lift augmentation for large wind turbine rotors are considered as thick inboard airfoils characterized by massive separation are desired to stronger contribute to power production. Special attention is given to the analyses of wind turbine loads and flow field that can be helpful for the interpretation of the occurring physical phenomena. The book is aimed at students, researchers, engineers and physicists dealing with wind engineering problems, but also for a wider audience involved in flow computations.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The flow produced by a rotating propeller is inherently unsteady and three-dimensional. Conventional design of propellers uses blade-element theory but becomes inaccurate in capturing three-dimensional vortical and compressible effects at the tips, as well as the effect on downstream bodies. A propeller is always attached to a fixed component that affects its performance, thus the need arises to couple a fixed domain to a rotating domain in an unsteady aerodynamic simulation. A finite element formulation for the simulation of propellers is presented in terms of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for unsteady, three-dimensional, viscous, compressible flows. The first step consists of preparing a mesh containing two separate domains interfacing at a virtual surface. Then, simulation is run to obtain an initial solution. This step highlights the live/dead interfacing scheme between the fixed and rotating domains without mesh movement. Finally the unsteady simulation performs interpolations at each time step with node movement until a periodic steady state is reached. Mesh movement can be treated by either an ALE formulation or a rotating frame of reference correction. Two test cases are used to validate the code: a two-dimensional pitching airfoil in transonic flow and a 3-bladed 5868-9 propeller with a liquid cooled nacelle." --
