Cette étude a nécessité la mise au point et l'utilisation de divers outils numériques, qui sont brièvement décrits. Les modèles physiques intervenant dans la description d'écoulements de gaz à haute enthalpie font l'objet d'une première partie. Les aspects expérimentaux sont ensuite évoqués : le deuxième volet de ce travail examine les écoulements dans les tuyères d'essais hypersoniques. Cette étude fait l'objet de plusieurs publications jointes à cette thèse. La faible influence des modèles physico-chimiques sur les propriétés thermodynamiques de l'écoulement est établie. L'hétérogénéité de l'écoulement en sortie d'une tuyère en forme à section semi-circulaire est confirmée par un calcul d'écoulement visqueux tridimensionnel. L'analyse critique de l'évaluation des flux et des marges qui leur sont associées est faite. Ce point est illustré par des exemples de calculs d'écoulement pour des sondes d'entrée atmosphérique. Pour ces calculs, une extension pour des températures jusqu'à 15000 K des polynômes interpolant les propriétés thermodynamiques des constituants de l'air et de l'atmosphère de titan est proposée, et appliquée à la rentrée de la sonde Cassini/Huygens. Les propriétés de transport nécessaires sont établies. Les diverses données concernant les cinétiques de vibration et de réaction sont rassemblées et complétées. L'influence des modèles thermodynamiques est démontrée pour un tube à choc contenant un mélange représentatif de l'atmosphère de titan. Des calculs d'écoulement de gaz non réactif visqueux, et de gaz hors équilibre non visqueux et visqueux sont effectués. Les résultats présentés concernent principalement les problèmes de cinétique chimique et vibrationnelle et les flux de chaleur convectifs. Les transferts radiatifs sont évoqués
