Book excerpt: Le présent travail présente une modélisation numérique des comportements hydrodynamiques des paliers cylindrique, elliptique et bilobé. Les déformations élastiques des parties solides sont prises en compte. La méthode des différences finies est utilisée pour la détermination du champ de pression. Le calcul numérique est accompli à l'aide d'un processus itératif en résolvant simultanément les équations de Reynolds, de l'énergie dans le film et de conduction thermique dans les parties solides. L'influence des conditions de fonctionnement sur l'intensité des champs de pression, de la température, le déplacement et le stress, est également analysée. En ce qui concerne la lubrification EHD, nous pouvons affirmer que la prise en compte des déformations élastiques dues à la pression de fluide est indispensable. Plusieurs études s'intéssent aussi aux effets thermiques dans les paliers. Les études TEHD sont plus réalistes que les études EHD, elles permettent une bonne estimation de la température du film mais aussi des déformées thermiques des solides. Dans le cas d'un palier très chargé, les déplacements engendrés peuvent être de l'ordre de l'épaisseur minimale du film. La principale difficulté d'une analyse thermique est le temps de calcul qui peut devenir prohibitif dans le cas d'études paramétriques. Une approche numérique originale, basée sur un retour aux équations de la mécanique des fluides générale et prenant en compte le couplage fluide/solide et les effets thermiques est proposée ici dans le but d'apporter des éléments physiques supplémentaires aux modélisations usuelles. Dans un premier temps, l'influence des effets de la géométrie sur l'évolution du champ de pression et de l'épaisseur du film sont mises en évidence. Dans un deuxième temps, on constate l'impact des différentes formes de la rugosité sur les performances des paliers. L'utilisation du modèle TEHD devient impérative dès lors que la pression spécifique dépasse certaines limites admissibles ou que la vitesse de rotation est supérieure à 30 m/s.

Cependant les performances des machines tournantes lubrifiées par un film fluide sont impactées par des effets non linéaires difficiles à analyser. La prédiction du comportement du système par la simulation nécessite une modélisation avancée de l'écoulement de lubrifiant dans le palier hydrodynamique. Enfin, l'état de surface semble avoir un impact important sur l'écoulement du fluide lubrifiant, lui-même agissant sur les caractéristiques statiques et dynamiques des parties tournantes. Cette étude vise à améliorer les modèles numériques liés à l'impact de l'état de surface des paliers hydrodynamiques sur la dynamique de ligne d'arbre. La méthode d'homogénéisation multi-échelles a été utilisée à cet effet dans un algorithme multi-physiques pour décrire l'interaction entre la structure flexible en rotation et les films fluides des supports de lubrification. Différents modèles ont été utilisés pour prendre en compte la présence de zone de rupture de film lubrifiant. Des méthodologies non-linéaires fréquentielles ont été mises en place afin de permettre l'étude paramétrique des solutions périodiques d'un tel système et de leur stabilité. Afin de confronter ce modèle complexe à la réalité, un banc d'essai miniature a également été conçu. Différents échantillons présentant des états de surface modifiés par ablation à l'aide de LASER femto-seconde ont été testés. L'étude expérimentale a permis de vérifier certaines tendances prévues par la simulation. Des améliorations des performances des paliers hydrodynamiques par rapport aux vibrations auto-entretenues du système ont été démontrées pour certaines textures. En revanche toutes les améliorations ne sont pas prédites par les algorithmes d'homogénéisation multi-échelles. La présence de recirculation dans les aspérités du motif a été mise en évidence à partir de la résolution locale des équations de Navier-Stokes. Ce résultat participe à la remise en question des hypothèses classiques utilisées en texturation, et peut justifier les améliorations obtenues expérimentalement avec les paliers texturés.

Book excerpt: This book celebrates the relaunch of the African Pollen Database, presents state-of-the-art of modern and ancient pollen data from sub-Saharan Africa, and promotes Open Access science. Pollen grains are powerful tools for the study of past vegetation dynamics because they preserve well within sedimentary deposits and have a huge diversity in ornamentation that allows different taxa to be determined. The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e.g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands), provide insights into changes in biodiversity, and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this, the 35th Volume of "Palaeoecology of Africa", we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution, human activity, climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles), human evolution, and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states, identify the drivers of vegetation change, and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i.e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past), and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i.e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological, environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western, eastern, central, and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change), as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution). These articles will be useful to students and teachers from high school to the highest level of university who are interested in the origins and dynamics of vegetation in Africa. Furthermore, it is also meant to provide societally relevant information that can act as an inspiration for the development of sustainable management practices for the future.
