Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite Materials, Volume 2: Mechanics of Composite Materials deals with the prediction of the deformation behavior and strength of composite materials. The book discusses the basic concepts in micromechanics, definition of effective moduli, and the influence of the number of fibers through-the-thickness within a single composite layer on the effective properties. The text also describes the exact moduli of anisotropie laminates; the elastic behavior of composites; and the viscoelastic behavior and analysis of composite materials. The elastoplastic behavior of composites, and the application of statistical theories for the determination of thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties of heterogeneous materials are also considered. The book further tackles the finite deformations of ideal fiber-reinforced composites; wave propagation and vibrations in directionally reinforced composites; and the phenomenological anisotropie failure criterion. The text also looks into the photoelastic investigation of composites. Civil engineers, mechanical engineers, aerospace engineers, and people involved in the study of non-metallic materials will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the latest findings in experimental plasticity, crystal plasticity, phase transitions, advanced mathematical modeling of finite plasticity and multi-scale modeling. The associated algorithmic treatment is mainly based on finite element formulations for standard (local approach) as well as for non-standard (non-local approach) continua and for pure macroscopic as well as for directly coupled two-scale boundary value problems. Applications in the area of material design/processing are covered, ranging from grain boundary effects in polycrystals and phase transitions to deep-drawing of multiphase steels by directly taking into account random microstructures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite tremendous advances made in fracture mechanics of concrete in recent years, very little information has been available on the nature of fracture processes and on reliable test methods for determining parameters for the different models. Moreover, most texts on this topic discuss numerical modeling but fail to consider experimentation. This book fills these gaps and synthesizes progress in the field in a simple, straightforward manner geared to practical applications.

Book excerpt: The scientific work of Jean Mandel has been exceptionally rich in the area of the mechanics of solids; the subjects which he has treated have been extremely diverse, from the theory of plasticity, buckling, soil mechanics, visco-elasticity, the theory of reduced models, and thermo dynamics, to percolation in porous media. But throughout this com prehensive work Jean Mandel has always maintained his interest in forming connections between the properties of materials (strength, deformability, viscosity) and the properties of their basic constituents. What is sometimes referred to in materials science as the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic has for him been a very constant direction of research, which he never ceased to encourage in the Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides of which he was the director. It is known that in the plasticity of metals permanent deformations must be sought in intercrystalline slip and more generally in disloca tions and the various microstructural defects. Before deformation of polycrystals is tackled, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms which take place within the crystal: the different systems of slip which may be activated and also the elementary mechanisms of twinning. Jean Mandel has shown how to make the transition from the behaviour of the single crystal to that of the polycrystal and has given the relation ships between the overall permanent deformation of the polycrystal and the plastic deformation of the single crystal.

At that time it was the first book on the subject of homogenization, which is the asymptotic analysis of partial differential equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients, and as such it sets the stage for what problems to consider and what methods to use, including probabilistic methods. At the time the book was written the use of asymptotic expansions with multiple scales was new, especially their use as a theoretical tool, combined with energy methods and the construction of test functions for analysis with weak convergence methods. Before this book, multiple scale methods were primarily used for non-linear oscillation problems in the applied mathematics community, not for analyzing spatial oscillations as in homogenization. In the current printing a number of minor corrections have been made, and the bibliography was significantly expanded to include some of the most important recent references. This book gives systematic introduction of multiple scale methods for partial differential equations, including their original use for rigorous mathematical analysis in elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic problems, and with the use of probabilistic methods when appropriate. The book continues to be interesting and useful to readers of different backgrounds, both from pure and applied mathematics, because of its informal style of introducing the multiple scale methodology and the detailed proofs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from a course on Micromechanics that I started about fifteen years ago at Northwestern University. At that time, micromechanics was a rather unfamiliar subject. Although I repeated the course every year, I was never convinced that my notes have quite developed into a final manuscript because new topics emerged constantly requiring revisions, and additions. I finally came to realize that if this is continued, then I will never complete the book to my total satisfaction. Meanwhile, T. Mori and I had coauthored a book in Japanese, entitled Micromechanics, published by Baifu-kan, Tokyo, in 1975. It received an extremely favorable response from students and re searchers in Japan. This encouraged me to go ahead and publish my course notes in their latest version, as this book, which contains further development of the subject and is more comprehensive than the one published in Japanese. Micromechanics encompasses mechanics related to microstructures of materials. The method employed is a continuum theory of elasticity yet its applications cover a broad area relating to the mechanical behavior of materi als: plasticity, fracture and fatigue, constitutive equations, composite materi als, polycrystals, etc. These subjects are treated in this book by means of a powerful and unified method which is called the 'eigenstrain method. ' In particular, problems relating to inclusions and dislocations are most effectively analyzed by this method, and therefore, special emphasis is placed on these topics.

The book reviews papers that emphasize fundamental mechanics, developments, and unresolved problems of the field. The text covers topics such as mechanical properties of composite materials; influence of microstructure on the thermoplastics and transport properties of particulate and short-fiber composites; and further applications of the systematic theory of materials with disordered constitution. The selection also explains the curved thermal crack growth in the interface of a unidirectional carbon-aluminum composite and energy release rates of various microcracks in short-fiber composites. The book will be of great interest to researchers and professionals whose line of work requires the understanding of the mechanics of composite materials.
