Book Synopsis Soil Micromorphology by : L.A. Douglas
Download or read book Soil Micromorphology written by L.A. Douglas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-03-28 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes selected papers from those presented at the International Working Meeting on Soil Micromorphology in San Antonio, Texas, July 1988. Each section of the book is introduced with an invited plenary paper followed by selected contributed manuscripts. The volume is intended to give the reader insight into the more recent research work involving soil micromorphology and an evaluation of the present day state of the science. New applications of micromorphology to both lunar pedology and archeology are presented. Recently developed methods for staining of microorganisms and thin section fluorescence microscopy are presented. The volume presents a summary of the research findings of the major practitioners of soil morphology and will give the reader insight as to the present state of the discipline. New methods and techniques will be made available to the reader. The book is intended for students, practicing micromorphologists, soil scientists, geologists, and geomorphologists.
Book Synopsis Scientific Basis for Soil Protection in the European Community by : H. Barth
Download or read book Scientific Basis for Soil Protection in the European Community written by H. Barth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PH. BOURDEAU Directorate-General Science. Research and Development. Commission of the European Communities. Brussels. Belgium We are living on a unique planet, the only one in the solar system where life exists. The very existence of life has modified the physical and chemical environment of the earth, its atmosphere and oceans, in a way that makes life sustainable. This system with its complex cybernetic mechanisms has been named GAIA by Lovelock. Man has always interfered with it on a more or less limited scale. This interference is now reaching global proportions such as climate modifications resulting from CO and trace gas 2 accumulation in the atmosphere or the destruction of stratospheric ozone, not to speak of global radioactive contamination. GAIA will probably prevail as a living system but it probably does not give much importance to man's survival as such, and it is man that has to take care of his own survival. In the ecosystem of Planet Earth, soils are the thin interface between lithosphere and atmosphere which constitutes the essential substrate for the terrestrial biosphere, the productivity of which far exceeds that of the oceans, even though the latter cover a much larger area than the continents. Soils themselves are complex systems. They develop through weathering of minerals, are colonised by living organisms which in turn modify their substrate making it suitable for other organisms. This induces a primary ecological succession which eventually reaches a climax, in equilibrium between climate, soil and the biological communities.

Book Synopsis Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects, Volume 3 by : Ammar Dhouib
Download or read book Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects, Volume 3 written by Ammar Dhouib and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical engineering is now a fundamental component of construction projects. The third volume of this book is its backbone, dedicated to foundations for civil and industrial construction projects. Applied Geotechnics for Construction Projects 3 first presents the basic theoretical principles and rules governing the designing and validation of foundations; shallow, semi-deep and deep, then presents real foundation projects with a detailed comparison of the approaches and methods of calculating foundations in relation to the reference systems and rules in force, closely compared to and validated by the Eurocodes. The third chapter presents examples of foundation projects, covering high-side building rafts, strip footings, piles and embankments, enriched by an unprecedented level of experience in the field of foundations for civil and industrial construction projects. It ends with examples of damage to foundations and practical appendices. Each chapter of this third volume is illustrated with photographs and measurements of construction sites and is built on both theory and experience in the field of foundations as a whole. The result is a combination of geotechnical expertise and lessons learned from experience, both of which are highly valuable in the field of applied geotechnics for construction projects.
