This is the third in a series of NATO/ASIs on transport phenomena in porous media. The first two, which took place at Newark, Delaware in 1982 and 1985, are devoted to various topics related to the Fundamentals of Transport Processes in Porous Media. The contents of the books resulting from previous NATO/ASIs are given at the end of this book. Transport of extensive quantities such as mass of a fluid phase, mass of chemical species carried by a fluid phase, energy and electric charge in porous media, as encountered in a large variety of engineering disciplines, is an emerging interdisciplinary field. The groundwater flow, the simultaneous flow of gas, oil and water in petroleum reservoirs, the movement and accumulation of pollutants in the saturated and unsaturated subsurface zones, thermal energy storage in reservoirs, land subsidence in response to charges in overburden loads, or to pumping of fluids from underground formations, wave propagation in seismic investigations or as produced by earthquakes, chemical reactors, water flow through sand filters and the movement of fluids through kidneys, may serve as examples of fields in which the theory of transport in porous media is employed.

C'est dans ce contexte que se situent les travaux rapportés dans ce mémoire et ses 700 références. Un potentiel important de réduction de la consommation d'énergie subsiste dans les industries minières, agroalimentaires, papetières, électroniques, pharmaceutiques et biotechnologiques, qui ont toutes à traiter de séparations solides-liquides pesantes. Le type de séparation solide-liquide considéré dans ce travail scientifique prend en compte des produits et dérivés provenant de ces six secteurs. La démarche présente un intérêt fondamental pour l'étude des écoulements hydrodynamiques et des déformations rapides. Elle pourrait donc s'étendre à la déformation des sols lors des catastrophes " dites naturelles ". Plus axée sur la compréhension fondamentale et les aspects pratiques des déformations multidimensionnelles de milieux poreux saturés, cette étude privilégie quatre modes de compression. A cet effet plusieurs cellules de compression multi-mode (MMCC[copyright]) et une unité pilote de pressage à vis (TSPU[copyright]) ont été conçues et favorablement testées. La compression à pression constante, CPC, et les modèles proposés conviennent à l'étude du comportement des milieux saturés: d'origine minérale. La compression à déformation constante, CDC, permet, sans hypothèse excessivement restrictive, de mettre à disposition trois approches théoriques adaptables à une large gamme de situations. Un des apports importants de la CDC est la rapidité des tests. Une base est ainsi établie pour l'étude à gradient de pression contrôlé. Les études préliminaires de la relaxation, post-compression CDC, ouvrent de nouvelles voies de recherche. Concernant la compression axiale avec écoulement multidirectionnel, sont développés le cas radial central ou périphérique et la configuration tridimensionnelle avec son extension au pressage à vis. On note un bon degré de prévisibilité des performances du pilote (TSPU[copyright]) à partir de la cellule de laboratoire (MMCC[copyright]). Enfin une application de la thermodynamique statistique et le calcul de l'énergie spécifique sont très prometteurs.

Sur le plan theorique et numerique, nous avons expose dans cette etude la formulation mathematique macroscopique des equations de conservation pour decrire clairement le cheminement qui conduit a une modelisation des processus de changement de phase d'un fluide (eau) saturant un milieu poreux, nous avons developpe un modele enthalpique qui nous a permis de traiter explicitement le probleme de changement de phase dans un seul domaine poreux constitue de deux sous domaines, liquide equivalent et glace equivalent. Nous avons developpe un code numerique, en utilisant la methode des volumes finis, ce code a ete valide avec la solution du probleme de stefan adaptee a un milieu poreux sature. Un modele analytique pour les problemes de changement de phase dans un domaine borne, inspire du probleme de stefan a ete developpe. Les resultats experimentaux obtenus permettent de mieux decrire la cinetique des transferts de changement de phase et de verifier la precision des resultats obtenus par simulation numerique. Par ailleurs, pour atteindre une precision significative des mesures de temperature, nous avons developpe une methode acoustique mieux appropriee a l'analyse du front de changement de phase, utilisant un algorithme developpe appele analyse de correlation des temps courts.
