Book excerpt: L'objet de notre travail est de proposer une méthodologie répondant, en un certain sens, au problème suivant : construire un bond graph passif approchant un système linéaire passif de dimension infinie donné. Afin de pouvoir tirer partie des résultats de la théorie de la réalisation, il est nécessaire d'obtenir une représentation en dimension finie du système considéré conservant la propriété de passivité. Dans le cas d'une approximation, il s'offre à nous deux possibilités. Nous pouvons soit directement en obtenir la synthèse par un circuit passif, soit en réduire l'ordre - par des transformations, conservant les propriétés de stabilité et de passivité - puis la réaliser. Un premier chapitre détaille la problématique. Le second traite du problème de l'approximation par un système de dimension finie passif d'un système de dimension infinie passif. Il y est fait un rappel succinct des méthodes classiques d'approximation, puis une proposition de méthode originale y est exposée. Le troisième chapitre propose un rapide tour d'horizon des principales méthodes de réduction de modèles de grande dimension. Une méthode originale de réduction, nécessitant la résolution d'un problème d'optimisation, est proposée dans le but d'être associée aux méthodes existantes. Le quatrième chapitre est consacré à la réalisation d'un bond graph correspondant au modèle approximant ou réduit. Enfin, dans le cinquième chapitre, quelques exemples permettent d'illustrer le processus d'approximation-réduction-réalisation par son application à différentes classes de systèmes de dimension infinie : systèmes à retard, systèmes décrits par des équations aux dérivées partielles et systèmes d'ordre non entier. Quatre annexes complètent le mémoire.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
