Book excerpt: Les travaux présentés s'inscrivent dans le cadre plus général de la fiabilité des matériaux isolants organiques soumis à de forts champs électriques. Le matériau étudié est le polyéthylène naphtalène 2,6 dicarboxylate (PEN), sous ses formes amorphe et semi-cristalline. Potentiellement parlant le PEN est, en tant que diélectrique, un concurrent sérieux du polypropylène ou du polyéthylène téraphtalate pour la fabrication des condensateurs. Ses propriétés en général, électriques en particulier, dépendent fortement de la microstructure. L'objectif d'une bonne partie de notre travail a été, de mettre en évidence l'influence de la morphologie du PEN sur la conduction électrique, la déformation mécanique induite par le champ électrique appliqué, et sur la dynamique d'évolution des charges d'espace. L'allure des courbes obtenues en utilisant différentes expériences montre bien que les mécanismes physiques associés à chacune, sont fortement corrélés. La mise en évidence et la quantification des champs seuils, champ électrique au-delà duquel les processus sont fortement accélérés (réponse non linéaire), va aussi dans ce sens. En effet, indépendamment de l'expérience, les valeurs obtenues pour les champs seuils sont très proches. Ainsi, l'intercorrélation des mécanismes de conduction électrique, de déformation mécanique induite et de charges d'espace a été quantifiée et analysée. Nous avons constaté que la morphologie du PEN a une très grande influence sur la valeur du champ seuil. Les processus (en fonction du champ électrique appliqué) s'accélèrent plus tardivement dans le cas d'une structure semi cristalline. Dans ce contexte, une attention particulière a été portée au comportement du PEN à forts champs, ceci dans une optique de mise en évidence des mécanismes précurseurs de la rupture diélectrique.

This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.
