Book excerpt: L'ETUDE DU FACTEUR DE CONSTRUCTION (RAPPORT ENTRE LES PERTES DU SYSTEME ASSEMBLE ET CELLES DE LA TOLE SEULE) MONTRE CLAIREMENT QUE LES ACTIONS MECANIQUES D'ASSEMBLAGE DES TOLES DANS UN MOTEUR DEGRADENT LEURS QUALITES MAGNETIQUES. TOUTEFOIS LA CAUSE PRECISE DE CETTE DETERIORATION RESTE MAL CONNUE. DANS CETTE RECHERCHE, L'APPROCHE QUE NOUS PROPOSONS EST DE TYPE CAUSALE, DANS LE SENS OU NOUS CHERCHONS A APPREHENDER LES PHENOMENES PHYSIQUES PRESENTS AU NIVEAU DE L'AIMANTATION LOCALE LORS DE L'APPLICATION D'UNE CONTRAINTE MECANIQUE. TOUT D'ABORD, NOUS AVONS MIS EN UVRE UN BANC EXPERIMENTAL, A EFFET KERR MAGNETO-OPTIQUE, QUI A PERMIS, POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS, D'APRES L'ETUDE BIBLIOGRAPHIQUE, LA VISUALISATION DES DOMAINES MAGNETIQUES REGULIERS SUR LES TOLES DE FER-SILICIUM A GRAINS NON-ORIENTES. PUIS, NOUS AVONS ELABORE UNE METHODOLOGIE DE DETERMINATION DE LA DIRECTION DE L'AIMANTATION DANS LES DIVERS DOMAINES, SIMPLE A UTILISER. CETTE METHODOLOGIE A ETE VALIDEE SUR DES EXEMPLES CONNUS DE CONFIGURATIONS MAGNETIQUES ET A PERMIS LA CONNAISSANCE DE LA DIRECTION DE L'AIMANTATION SUR DES STRUCTURES QUE LES RAISONNEMENTS PHYSIQUES CLASSIQUES NE PARVIENNENT PAS A EXPLIQUER. LEUR ANALYSE PEUT PERMETTRE, COMME NOUS L'AVONS ABORDE, LA COMPREHENSION DE L'ORGANISATION DES DOMAINES DANS LE VOLUME DE LA TOLE. ENFIN, UN ESSAI D'APPLICATION DE CETTE METHODOLOGIE A L'ETUDE DE L'INFLUENCE DES CONTRAINTES MECANIQUES SUR LES PROPRIETES MAGNETIQUES DES TOLES A ETE REALISE. POUR CE TYPE DE TRAVAIL NOTRE METHODOLOGIE OFFRE UN OUTIL DE QUANTIFICATION PRATIQUE ET FIABLE. LA VOIE EST DONC OUVERTE POUR LA RECHERCHE DE CORRELATIONS ENTRE LES CONTRAINTES APPLIQUEES AU MATERIAU ET LA DEFORMATION DES DOMAINES MAGNETIQUES ENGENDREE

This book was released on 2012 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book excerpt: In-depth interviews with the main movers in the punk rock movement--Crass members Penny Rimbaud, Gee Vaucher, and Steve Ignorant--detail the face of the revolution founded by these radical thinkers and artists. When punk ruled the waves, Crass waived the rules by putting out their own records, films, and magazines and setting up a series of situationist pranks that were dutifully covered by the world's press. Not just another iconoclastic band, Crass was a musical, social, and political phenomenon: commune dwellers that were rarely photographed and remained contemptuous of conventional pop stardom. As detailed in this history, their members explored and finally exhausted the possibilities of punk-led anarchy. This definitive biography of the band not only gives backstage access to their lives, philosophies, and the movement that followed, but also to never-before-seen photographs and rare dialogues.

Common examples include copper used in electrical wiring and titanium used to make airplane frames and paint pigments. The Information Age has ushered in a number of new mineral uses in a number of products including cell phones (e.g., tantalum) and liquid crystal displays (e.g., indium). For some minerals, such as the platinum group metals used to make cataytic converters in cars, there is no substitute. If the supply of any given mineral were to become restricted, consumers and sectors of the U.S. economy could be significantly affected. Risks to minerals supplies can include a sudden increase in demand or the possibility that natural ores can be exhausted or become too difficult to extract. Minerals are more vulnerable to supply restrictions if they come from a limited number of mines, mining companies, or nations. Baseline information on minerals is currently collected at the federal level, but no established methodology has existed to identify potentially critical minerals. This book develops such a methodology and suggests an enhanced federal initiative to collect and analyze the additional data needed to support this type of tool.

Book excerpt: Metal recycling is a complex business that is becoming increasingly difficult! Recycling started long ago, when people realized that it was more resource- and cost-efficient than just throwing away the resources and starting all over again. In this report, we discuss how to increase metal-recycling rates - and thus resource efficiency - from both quantity and quality viewpoints. The discussion is based on data about recycling input, and the technological infrastructure and worldwide economic realities of recycling. Decision-makers set increasingly ambitious targets for recycling, but far too much valuable metal today is lost because of the imperfect collection of end-of-life (EoL) products, improper practices, or structural deficiencies within the recycling chain, which hinder achieving our goals of high resource efficiency and resource security, and of better recycling rates.

Book excerpt: “Simplexity, as I understand it, is the range of solutions living organisms have found, despite the complexity of natural processes, to enable the brain to prepare an action and plan for the consequences of it. These solutions are simplifying principles that enable the processing of information or situations, by taking into account past experience and anticipating the future. They are neither caricatures, shortcuts, or summaries. They are new ways of asking questions, sometimes at the cost of occasional detours, in order to achieve faster, more elegant, more effective actions.” A. B. As Alain Berthoz demonstrates in this profoundly original book, simplicity is never easy; it requires suppressing, selecting, connecting, thinking, in order to then act in the best way possible. And what if we, in turn, are inspired by the living world to process the complexity that surrounds us? Alain Berthoz is professor at the Collège de France where he is co-director of the Laboratoire de physiologie de la perception et de l’action. [Laboratory for the physiology of perception and action]. He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, and is the author of Le Sens du mouvement [The Brain's Sense of Movement] and La Décision [Emotion and Reason].
