Le mécanisme de la réaction de dégagement de l'hydrogène, déduit des valeurs de la pente de la droite de Tafel et de l'ordre de la réaction électrochimique par rapport aux protons, apparaît différent suivant que le dépôt d'arsenic élémentaire à la surface de l'alliage a lieu en l'absence de potentiel imposé ou en présence d'une polarisation cathodique. Le dépôt cathodique d'arsenic élémentaire favorise l'absorption d'hydrogène par l'austénite et, par suite, la fissuration superficielle par inhibition de la réaction de désorption électrochimique de l'hydrogène monoatomique absorbé.
