Book excerpt: Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) was introduced in the United States almost 100 years ago when the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads (now the Federal Highway Administration) constructed a CRCP test section on Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia. Since then, CRCP has been constructed in many states in the U.S. and in a number of other countries. As experience with the design and construction of CRCP has grown, a variety of lessons learned through practical experience and research have contributed to the development of best practices for CRCP throughout its life cycle. Today, CRCP is designed and constructed as a pavement of choice for long-life performance, recognizing that initial smoothness will be maintained for decades and that maintenance during that time will be minimal. This manual provides guidance for materials selection and quality assurance, and for the mechanistic-empirical design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of CRCP. Case studies are summarized to document the overall long-life performance of CRCP in the U.S. and in other countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is enjoying a renaissance across the United States and around the world. CRCP has the potential to provide a long-term, "zero-maintenance," service life under heavy traffic loadings and challenging environmental conditions, provided proper design and quality construction practices are utilised. This book provides an overview of the CRCP technology and the major developments that have led to what are referred to herein as the "best practices" for CRCP design and construction. The purpose of this book is to provide the best practices information on rehabilitation strategies for extending the service life of continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP). The procedures described in this book consist of defining the problem, identifying potential solutions, and selecting the preferred alternatives.

Book excerpt: The report constitutes Volume III of a four-volume series on design and construction of new and overlay continuously reinforced concrete airfield pavement and contains a detailed procedure for designing new pavements. It contains procedures for evaluating values, selecting the required slab thickness, designing transverse and longitudinal reinforcing steel, joint design and designing anchorage systems. The design procedures are presented in the form of a series of charts and nomographs from which design parameters may be obtained by entering with appropriate input parameters. A detailed procedure for resilient modulus testing is also provided. (Author).

Book excerpt: The use of continuously reinforced concrete (CRC) pavement, as an alternative that eliminates the necessity for most crack control joints, has a proven record of good service performance extending back more than 30 years. CRC pavement is a portland cement concrete pavement with continuous longitudinal reinforcement achieved by lapping the reinforcing bars. The construction practices treated in this manual encompass activities that influence the performance of CRC pavement including subgrade, subbase, drainage construction practices, construction joints, terminal joints, ramps and shoulders, and other details.

Book excerpt: This report documents enhancement incorporated in the (HIgh PERformance PAVing) HIPERPAV(trademark) II software. Enhancements made within this project include the addition of two major modules: a module to predict the performance of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP) as affected by early-age factors and a module to predict the early-age behavior (first 72 hours) and early life (up to 1 year) of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP). Two additional Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) studies were also incorporated: one that predicts dowel bearing stresses as a function of environmental loading during the early age and a module for optimization of concrete paving mixes as a function of 3-day strength, 28-day strength, and cost. Additional functionality to the software also was incorporated by reviewing and prioritizing the feedback provided by users of the first generation of the software, HIPERPAV 1.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents enhancements incorporated in the (HIgh PERformance PAVing) HIPERPAV® II software. Additional functionality to the software also was incorporated by reviewing and prioritizing the feedback provided by users of the first generation of the software, HIPERPAV I. This volume provides a comprehensive set of guidelines useful in designing and constructing both JPCP and CRCP concrete pavements. In addition, this document also provides sample case studies that illustrate the proper use of HIPERPAV II to optimize concrete pavement behavior and contains a user's manual for HIPERPAV II. This is the second volume in a series of three volumes that document the different tasks carried out in accomplishing the objectives for this project.
