Book excerpt: A semi-continuous anaerobic digester (4 litre) was used to degrade palm oil mill effluent (POME) under mesophilic condition at 37 C with the use of flocculants to cause good biomass aggregation. Maximum achievable loading of 10 kg COD/m3/day (hydraulic retention time of 6 days) with soluble COD removal of 91% was achieved. This rate is significantly faster than the rates achieved in previously reported mesophilic studies. [Author's abstract].

This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IWA Task Group for Mathematical Modelling of Anaerobic Digestion Processes was created with the aim to produce a generic model and common platform for dynamic simulations of a variety of anaerobic processes. This book presents the outcome of this undertaking and is the result of four years collaborative work by a number of international experts from various fields of anaerobic process technology. The purpose of this approach is to provide a unified basis for anaerobic digestion modelling. It is hoped this will promote increased application of modelling and simulation as a tool for research, design, operation and optimisation of anaerobic processes worldwide. This model was developed on the basis of the extensive but often disparate work in modelling and simulation of anaerobic digestion systems over the last twenty years. In developing ADM1, the Task Group have tried to establish common nomenclature, units and model structure, consistent with existing anaerobic modelling literature and the popular activated sludge models (See Activated Sludge Models ASM1, ASM2, ASM2d and ASM3, IWA Publishing, 2000, ISBN: 1900222248). As such, it is intended to promote widespread application of simulation from domestic (wastewater and sludge) treatment systems to specialised industrial applications. Outputs from the model include common process variables such gas flow and composition, pH, separate organic acids, and ammonium. The structure has been devised to encourage specific extensions or modifications where required, but still maintain a common platform. During development the model has been successfully tested on a range of systems from full-scale waste sludge digestion to laboratory-scale thermophilic high-rate UASB reactors. The model structure is presented in a readily applicable matrix format for implementation in many available differential equation solvers. It is expected that the model will be available as part of commercial wastewater simulation packages. ADM1 will be a valuable information source for practising engineers working in water treatment (both domestic and industrial) as well as academic researchers and students in Environmental Engineering and Science, Civil and Sanitary Engineering, Biotechnology, and Chemical and Process Engineering departments. Book excerpt: Written as a practical introduction to biogas plant design and operation, this book fills a huge gap by presenting a systematic guide to this emerging technology -- information otherwise only available in poorly intelligible reports by US governmental and other official agencies. The author draws on teaching material from a university course as well as a wide variety of industrial biogas projects he has been involved with, thus combining didactical skill with real-life examples. Alongside biological and technical aspects of biogas generation, this timely work also looks at safety and legal aspects as well as environmental considerations.

After introducing the plantation and milling processes, the book focuses on the wastes generated solely from plantation and milling activities, as reducing waste from these two sectors will enhance the overall sustainability of the entire palm oil industry eco-system. It then evaluates the sustainability of current practices and elaborates on technological developments in the two sectors, before critically assessing options to treat wastes generated from the plantation and milling process. To properly contextualise the work, it also includes a section on socio-economical sustainability, as well as an industrial case study. A valuable resource for academics interested in the evolution of sustainable waste management strategies within this industrial context, the book also appeals to practitioners in the field who wish to improve the sustainability of their particular plantation or mill.

Book excerpt: This book presents new application processes in the context of anaerobic digestion (AD), such as phosphorus recovery, microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and seaweed digestion. In addition, it introduces a new technique for the modeling and optimization of AD processes. Chapters 1 and 2 review AD as a technique for converting a range of organic wastes into biogas, while Chapter 3 discusses the recovery of phosphorus from anaerobically digested liquor. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on new techniques for modeling and optimizing AD. Chapters 6 and 7 then describe the state of the art in AD effluent treatment. The book’s final three chapters focus on more recent developments, including microbial fuel cells (MFCs) (Chapter 8), seaweed production (Chapter 9), and enzyme technologies (Chapter 10).

This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an extension of a 500 m3 methane recovery test plant study located at Serting Hilir Palm Oil Mill, Negeri Sembilan conducted by our research group on anaerobic treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME). Biomass washout has become one of the problems faced by our research group because of the continous mixing effluent during anaerobic treatment at POME. Therefore, in this study, anaerobic POME treatment using a scaled down 50 L bioreactor which mimics the 500 m3 bioreactor was carried out to improve biogas production with and without biomass sedimentation. Three series of experiments were conducted under different conditions in terms of biomass sedimentation applied to the system. The first experiment was operated under semi-continuous mode whereas the second and third experiments were operated based on mix and settle mode system. As expected, by retaining biomass in the bioreactor, there was an improvement on the anaerobic process as the system from the second and third experiments were able to operate at organic loading rate (OLR) of 3.4 and 6.0 kg COD/m3/d, respectively while the first experiment only achieved OLR of 3.0 kg COD/m3/d. At these OLR value, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) obtained was 10 days in the third experiment and followed by the first and second experiments with 15 days of HRT. The highest biogas production was achieved from the third experiment which was 2.42 m3/m3 of reactor/d. This was followed by second and first experiments which were 1.55 and 1.20 m3/m3 of reactor/d respectively. The highest methane production rate was also obtained in the third experiment with 0.992 m3/m3 of reactor/d as compared to the second and experiments which were 0.655 and 0.553 m3/m3 of reactor/d, respectively. For COD removal, more than 90% of COD was removed for all the experiments. The experimental data for the first experiment was applied to the two-stage mathematical model of acidogenesis and methanogenesis which were developed by previous researchers. The first experimental data was used because it representes the actual scenario on how the methane recovery test plant was operated in which biomass washout was taken into consideration. In modelling the behaviour of the anaerobic digestion process, the mathematical model was used to simulate the methane production from the anaerobic treatment of POME. From the simulation result, the model was shown to be satisfactory for simulating methane production from the anaerobic treatment of POME.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supernatant of the centrifuged palm oil mill effluent was anaerobically treated in a 25 litre agitated digester. The starting COD of the feed effluent was fixed at 16,500 mg/l. Studies were conducted at both mesophilic (30 and 35 C) and thermophilic (55 C) tempe for various hydraulic retention times. It was found that for retention times of 10 days or more, most of the process parameters remain relatively constant. Under mesophilic conditions the pH was about 7.0, volatile acids at around 1,000 mg/l and alkalinity in the of 4,000 to 4,500 mg/l. In the thermophilic case, the pH was higher at between 7.9 and 8.3, volatile acids of 1,500 to 2,000 mg/l and alkalinity varying between 2,500 and 4,000 mg/l. Over 80% COD reduction could be obtained but only 50% of the total solids was degraded for both digestions.
