Book Synopsis Singing the Congregation by : Monique M. Ingalls
Download or read book Singing the Congregation written by Monique M. Ingalls and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary worship music shapes the way evangelical Christians understand worship itself. Author Monique M. Ingalls argues that participatory worship music performances have brought into being new religious social constellations, or "modes of congregating". Through exploration of five of these modes--concert, conference, church, public, and networked congregations--Singing the Congregation reinvigorates the analytic categories of "congregation" and "congregational music." Drawing from theoretical models in ethnomusicology and congregational studies, Singing the Congregation reconceives the congregation as a fluid, contingent social constellation that is actively performed into being through communal practice--in this case, the musically-structured participatory activity known as "worship." "Congregational music-making" is thereby recast as a practice capable of weaving together a religious community both inside and outside local institutional churches. Congregational music-making is not only a means of expressing local concerns and constituting the local religious community; it is also a powerful way to identify with far-flung individuals, institutions, and networks that comprise this global religious community. The interactions among the congregations reveal widespread conflicts over religious authority, carrying far-ranging implications for how evangelicals position themselves relative to other groups in North America and beyond.

Book Synopsis A Change Is Gonna' Come by : Barry C. Johnson
Download or read book A Change Is Gonna' Come written by Barry C. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As churches continue to struggle to offer innovative worship celebrations, A Change is Gonna' Come: The Transformation of a Traditional to a Contemporary Worship Celebration, presents a method of transition between the many worship wars fought in our churches. This work recognizes the role and importance of the worship celebration and its impact on the goal of further development of church members who gather weekly to worship Christ. This work is dedicated to assist pastors and musicians to move into a contemporary worship while minimizing the conflicts that sometimes are a result of change. I have used the history and metamorphosis of gospel music, charismatic attitudes, and situational preaching to realize that true worship is constantly evolving. The text reveals that worship evolution is not only necessary, it is also historical. For example: The book traces a basic history of gospel music and its shared influences with R and B and the use of the recording media. I have chronicled the Black Church because the history and the struggles of black people have allowed the church to worship in a flexible manner. Several musical examples are presented to indicate how traditions are absorbed by contemporary approaches. This book is a companion and guide for pastors, musicians and church leaders who wish to suppress the struggle of transforming a "lifeless" church into one with a vibrant and ecstatically worshipping church. Several objectives of this book include: How to transform a worship celebration Small church with a large church atmosphere Presenting a spiritual transfusion The greatest atmosphere is when all of the people come together in one joyful celebration of worship. My argument is that all worship is contemporary when it is introduced and becomes traditional when it becomes the accepted norm for the church. It is time to end these worship wars and allow all of God's children to participate in the fullness of God's worship celebration

Book Synopsis Worship by the Book by : Rev. Mark Ashton
Download or read book Worship by the Book written by Rev. Mark Ashton and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What is at stake is authenticity. . . . Sooner or later Christians tire of public meetings that are profoundly inauthentic, regardless of how well (or poorly) arranged, directed, performed. We long to meet, corporately, with the living and majestic God and to offer him the praise that is his due.”—D. A. CarsonWorship is a hot topic, but the ways that Christians from different traditions view it vary greatly. What is worship? More important, what does it look like in action, both in our corporate gatherings and in our daily lives? These concerns—the blending of principle and practice—are what Worship by the Book addresses.Cutting through cultural clichés, D. A. Carson, Mark Ashton, Kent Hughes, and Timothy Keller explore, respectively:· Worship Under the Word· Following in Cranmer’s Footsteps· Free Church Worship: The Challenge of Freedom· Reformed Worship in the Global City “This is not a comprehensive theology of worship,” writes Carson. “Still less is it a sociological analysis of current trends or a minister’s manual chockfull of ‘how to’ instructions.” Rather, this book offers pastors, other congregational leaders, and seminary students a thought-provoking biblical theology of worship, followed by a look at how three very different traditions of churchmanship might move from this theological base to a better understanding of corporate worship. Running the gamut from biblical theology to historical assessment all the way to sample service sheets, Worship by the Book shows how local churches in diverse traditions can foster corporate worship that is God-honoring, Word-revering, heartfelt, and historically and culturally informed.
Book Synopsis Discerning the Spirits by : Cornelius Plantinga
Download or read book Discerning the Spirits written by Cornelius Plantinga and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003-11-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian worship in North America has undergone great change in recent years. But change always brings uncertainty -- at times even division -- about what constitutes "authentic worship." This important book reviews a wide variety of current perspectives and offers a fresh outlook on the contemporary practice of Christian worship. In order to provide the widest, most insightful discussion on present-day worship practices yet assembled, the authors gathered a team of church musicians, ministers, worship leaders, and educators from eight church traditions. Discerning the Spirits is the fruit of their work. Shaped by the wisdom of men and women like Marva Dawn, Justo Gonzalez, C. Michael Hawn, and John Witvliet, this book broadens today's "worship wars" into a bigger, richer discussion that moves from arguments over musical tastes to good thinking about the overall purpose of worship in relation to church life and God himself. Sidebar articles and quotes are meant to draw readers and study groups into dialogue on these issues. Whether one plays a leadership role in church worship or is simply grappling with questions about it, Discerning the Spirits is a must-read.
Book Synopsis The Purpose, Pattern, and Character of Worship by : L. Edward Phillips
Download or read book The Purpose, Pattern, and Character of Worship written by L. Edward Phillips and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the broad range of Christianity we find diverse understandings of what makes for “good worship.” The Purpose, Pattern, and Character of Worship develops a typology of Christian worship to provide a method of assessing the decisions of congregations and leaders in forming and changing the orders of their worship. Among contemporary western Protestants, we identify at least six discrete characteristics of worship: -the Revival, -the Sunday School, -the Aesthetic Revival, -the Pentecostal/holiness movement, -the Prayer Meeting, -the twentieth-century Catholic Liturgical Renewal. These patterns define contemporary expression as: -Seeker Worship, -Creative Worship, -Traditional Worship, -Praise Worship, -House Church Worship, -Word and Table Worship. Absent an overall authority for the structure of worship (such as the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer), many Protestant congregations have developed a “conflation of patterns,” which often creates incoherent worship. This book helps leaders define the purpose, character, and pattern of their community’s worship.
Book Synopsis We Will Feast by : Kendall Vanderslice
Download or read book We Will Feast written by Kendall Vanderslice and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the practice of eating together as Christian worship The gospel story is filled with meals. It opens in a garden and ends in a feast. Records of the early church suggest that believers met for worship primarily through eating meals. Over time, though, churches have lost focus on the centrality of food— and with it a powerful tool for unifying Christ’s diverse body. But today a new movement is under way, bringing Christians of every denomination, age, race, and sexual orientation together around dinner tables. Men and women nervous about stepping through church doors are finding God in new ways as they eat together. Kendall Vanderslice shares stories of churches worshiping around the table, introducing readers to the rising contemporary dinner-church movement. We Will Feast provides vision and inspiration to readers longing to experience community in a real, physical way.
