Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this book of poems and other ramblings was the furthest thing from my mind when I first decided to do a project. In all my travels around the world, there were so many inspiring people and places that it would be next to impossible to include them all in one little book such as this. Contemplating loves and loving moments were and still are the innermost cravings of my heart. Lost loves and the pain of separation from them is the nucleus from which most of these words came. But I must add that there were many joyful times that are just as unforgettable. It was so stimulating and exciting gathering thoughts and feelings from so many different sources, which I will never forget. Some were educational as well too. There is at least another book in the works at this point in time. My only regret is that this one is already finished and the fun ended way too soon. Ive discovered that every heart has a little something to offer, and that each heart is a blessing in more ways than one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramblings of a Simpleton is a collection of narratives that represents author Dr. S.V. Prabhath's attempts to pen down a few of his various experiences, observations, and anecdotes from his journey of life. Some sections deal with workday experiences, others with episodes from the author's personal life, while others are recollections of younger days. While the book has some philosophical reflections, balancing light musings on the commonplace with occasional forays into the darker recesses of the unconscious, it is meant only for light reading. Unlike many books of a similar philosophical bent, Ramblings of a Simpleton is intended to elicit smiles and occasional chuckles as much as an odd moment of reflection or inward contemplation. The narratives in the book are grouped into six sections, forming a melting pot of memoirs that attempt to depict the rainbow of emotions that profile the author's life. The author draws upon his diverse background in various fields of research, teaching, publishing, and world travel to present the reader with a colorful palette of experiences and anecdotes that are amusing and also enlightening.Possessing what he describes as a wholesome academic background, author Dr. S.V. Prabhath is a scholar, a man of letters, and a contributor to various journals and publications. Along the route of his well-travelled life, he has edited numerous books including Gandhi Today and Youth and Rural India. On the front cover is a picture of his father who is in his 90s. The book's title Ramblings of a Simpleton is aptly epitomized by his photograph, which captures him in a contemplative mood on a Sunday evening. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/SVPrabhat

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Kathleen Norris, Terry Tempest Williams, and Thomas Merton, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes explores the impulse that has drawn seekers into the wilderness for centuries and offers eloquent testimony to the healing power of mountain silence and desert indifference. Interweaving a memoir of his mother's long struggle with Alzheimer's and cancer, meditations on his own wilderness experience, and illuminating commentary on the Christian via negativa--a mystical tradition that seeks God in the silence beyond language--Lane rejects the easy affirmations of pop spirituality for the harsher but more profound truths that wilderness can teach us. "There is an unaccountable solace that fierce landscapes offer to the soul. They heal, as well as mirror, the brokeness we find within." It is this apparent paradox that lies at the heart of this remarkable book: that inhuman landscapes should be the source of spiritual comfort. Lane shows that the very indifference of the wilderness can release us from the demands of the endlessly anxious ego, teach us to ignore the inessential in our own lives, and enable us to transcend the "false self" that is ever-obsessed with managing impressions. Drawing upon the wisdom of St. John of the Cross, Meister Eckhardt, Simone Weil, Edward Abbey, and many other Christian and non-Christian writers, Lane also demonstrates how those of us cut off from the wilderness might "make some desert" in our lives. Written with vivid intelligence, narrative ease, and a gracefulness that is itself a comfort, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes gives us not only a description but a "performance" of an ancient and increasingly relevant spiritual tradition.

Book excerpt: It doesn't matter if you're in the woods every other weekend or every other day. Outdoorsman or angler are broad terms and applies to a large population. However, the title does not encapsulate someone who frequently engages in either. Ultimately, anglers, hunters, hikers, etc., are ordinary people whose lives move from anecdote to anecdote, until life gets serious. An outdoorsman is not immune to failure, complex life decisions, nor are things simpler. Being on the water with a fly rod or in the alpine with a rifle does not provide answers because neither a mountain or a fish can talk. However, when life brings trauma, a fly rod can be the best weapon with which to keep fighting. Going Home is a memoir about fishing, without being just about fishing. It's about a man contemplating direction and his sense of home after he is jerked from his linear journey of a life spent chasing fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Preib is an officer in the Chicago Police Department—a beat cop whose first assignment as a rookie policeman was working on the wagon that picks up the dead. Inspired by Preib’s daily life on the job, The Wagon and Other Stories from the City chronicles the outer and inner lives of both a Chicago cop and the city itself. The book follows Preib as he transports body bags, forges an unlikely connection with his female partner, trains a younger officer, and finds himself among people long forgotten—or rendered invisible—by the rest of society. Preib recounts how he navigates the tenuous labyrinths of race and class in the urban metropolis, such as a domestic disturbance call involving a gang member and his abused girlfriend or a run-in with a group of drunk yuppies. As he encounters the real and imagined geographies of Chicago, the city reveals itself to be not just a backdrop, but a central force in his narrative of life and death. Preib’s accounts, all told in his breathtaking prose, come alive in ways that readers will long remember.

Book excerpt: Eli Monpress is clever, he's determined, and he's in way over his head. First rule of thievery: don't be a hero. When Eli broke the rules and saved the Council Kingdoms, he thought he knew the price, but resuming his place as the Shepherdess's favorite isn't as simple as bowing his head. Now that she has her darling back, Benehime is setting in motion a plan that could destroy everything she was created to protect, and even Eli's charm might not be enough to stop her. But Eli Monpress always has a plan, and with disaster rapidly approaching, he's pulling in every favor he can think of to make it work, including the grudging help of the Spirit Court's new Rector, Miranda Lyonette. But with the world in panic, the demon stirring, and the Lord of Storms back on the hunt, it's going to take more than luck and charm to pull Eli through this time. He's going to have to break a few more rules and work with some old enemies if he's going to survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blake Parker worked on this series of writings in the last year of his life while he lived with a terminal diagnosis of cancer. It is a mixture of poetry, dialogues, book reports, and short essays, formed as a sort of shorthand to a number of concepts, primarily from sociology and anthropology, which he saw as useful, if not actually essential, for understanding symbolic interpretation and the essence of the therapeutic process within a social and cultural context. He designed the psychoanalytic and therapeutic diagrams to clarify concepts and as teaching aids for art therapy students and therapists. Blake uses a phenomenological understanding of metaphor in order to throw light upon the process of social construction, creativity, and conceptions of mysticism or spirituality. The book includes some of his personal reflections regarding death, dying, creativity, and the meaning of life. The notes are essentially a hermeneutic of mysticism, a moving from the parts to the whole and the whole to the parts. It is a forest of ideas and ramblings in interpretive frameworks that emerged and is presented in a circular spiral.
