Book excerpt: This research investigates the use of constructivist teaching practice as a way to foster inclusion of special education students in a middle school science classroom. This case study focused on five special needs students to observe how constructivist teaching methods affected their learning. It was found that four of the five special needs students were positively affected by this approach. Students gained confidence in their abilities, formed positive peer relationships, and attained part or all of their learning objectives. Students also benefited from increased metacognitive skills. Through this case study it was found that constructivism fosters inclusion of mild to moderate special need students. Students were able to adapt and function well within the constructivist classroom. However, this research concluded that constructivist teaching methods did not support the inclusion of all students. Students with severe learning disabilities struggled within the constructivist classroom and perhaps need more specialized help and instruction.
