Book excerpt: A multi-distance labeling (or radio labeling) of a graph G is a function f that assigns each vertex a non-negative integer label such that the separation of labels between distinct vertices u,v is at least diam(G) + 1 -- d(u,v), where the distance d(u,v) between u and v is the length of a shortest path from u to v and the diameter diam(G) is the maximum distance between any two vertices in G. The span of a radio labeling f is the difference between the smallest and largest labels assigned by f, and the radio number of G is the smallest possible span for any radio labeling of G. We will prove a general formula for the radio number of all grid graphs dependent only on their horizontal and vertical lengths and their parity. We also survey other graphs and their radio numbers, some of which are completely determined. Of special interest within this survey is the radio number of different tree graphs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North-Holland Texts in Advanced Mathematics: Introduction to Finite Geometries focuses on the advancements in finite geometries, including mapping and combinatorics. The manuscript first offers information on the basic concepts on finite geometries and Galois geometries. Discussions focus on linear mapping of a given quadrangle onto another given quadrangle; point configurations of order 2 on a Galois plane of even order; canonical equation of curves of the second order on the Galois planes of even order; and set of collineations mapping a Galois plane onto itself. The text then ponders on geometrical configurations and nets, as well as pentagon theorem and the Desarguesian configuration, two pentagons inscribed into each other, and the concept of geometrical nets. The publication takes a look at combinatorial applications of finite geometries and combinatorics and finite geometries. Topics include generalizations of the Petersen graph, combinatorial extremal problem, and theorem of closure of the hyperbolic space. The book is a valuable source of data for readers interested in finite geometries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the winter of 1978, Professor George P61ya and I jointly taught Stanford University's introductory combinatorics course. This was a great opportunity for me, as I had known of Professor P61ya since having read his classic book, How to Solve It, as a teenager. Working with P6lya, who ·was over ninety years old at the time, was every bit as rewarding as I had hoped it would be. His creativity, intelligence, warmth and generosity of spirit, and wonderful gift for teaching continue to be an inspiration to me. Combinatorics is one of the branches of mathematics that play a crucial role in computer sCience, since digital computers manipulate discrete, finite objects. Combinatorics impinges on computing in two ways. First, the properties of graphs and other combinatorial objects lead directly to algorithms for solving graph-theoretic problems, which have widespread application in non-numerical as well as in numerical computing. Second, combinatorial methods provide many analytical tools that can be used for determining the worst-case and expected performance of computer algorithms. A knowledge of combinatorics will serve the computer scientist well. Combinatorics can be classified into three types: enumerative, eXistential, and constructive. Enumerative combinatorics deals with the counting of combinatorial objects. Existential combinatorics studies the existence or nonexistence of combinatorial configurations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph Theory and Computing focuses on the processes, methodologies, problems, and approaches involved in graph theory and computer science. The book first elaborates on alternating chain methods, average height of planted plane trees, and numbering of a graph. Discussions focus on numbered graphs and difference sets, Euclidean models and complete graphs, classes and conditions for graceful graphs, and maximum matching problem. The manuscript then elaborates on the evolution of the path number of a graph, production of graphs by computer, and graph-theoretic programming language. Topics include FORTRAN characteristics of GTPL, design considerations, representation and identification of graphs in a computer, production of simple graphs and star topologies, and production of stars having a given topology. The manuscript examines the entropy of transformed finite-state automata and associated languages; counting hexagonal and triangular polyominoes; and symmetry of cubical and general polyominoes. Graph coloring algorithms, algebraic isomorphism invariants for graphs of automata, and coding of various kinds of unlabeled trees are also discussed. The publication is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in graph theory and computing.
