Book excerpt: A high proportion of commercial, industrial and housing developments are now built on fills, that is ground that has been deposited by human activity rather than natural geological processes, and the political and commercial impetus to build on 'brownfield' land continues to grow. An adequate understanding of the behaviour of fills and the ways in which they can economically be rendered suitable for building purposes is a critical element in ensuring the safe development of such sites. This third edition encompasses BRE's unique experience over a period of more than 40 years of research and consultancy, and brings the subject up to date. New material includes: - research findings and industry experience since publication of the second edition 14 years ago - additional chapters on ground improvement and treatment using both proprietary and non-proprietary techniques - six new case histories and updated cases from the second edition - studies on the behaviour of fills over both a longer time period and a wider range of fills.

Book excerpt: Without proper hydraulic fill and suitable specialised equipment, many major infrastructure projects such as ports, airports, roads, industrial or housing projects could not be realised. Yet comprehensive information about hydraulic fill is difficult to find. This thoroughly researched book, written by noted experts, takes the reader step-by-step through the complex development of a hydraulic fill project. Up-to-date and in-depth, this manual will enable the client and his consultant to understand and properly plan a reclamation project. It provides adequate guidelines for design and quality control and allows the contractor to work within known and generally accepted guidelines and reasonable specifications. The ultimate goal is to create better-designed, more adequately specified and less costly hydraulic fill projects. The Hydraulic Fill Manual covers a range of topics such as: • The development cycle of a hydraulic fill project • How technical data are acquired and applied • The construction methods applicable to a wide variety of equipment and soil conditions, the capabilities of dredging equipment and the techniques of soil improvement • How to assess the potentials of a borrow pit • Essential environment assessment issues • The design of the hydraulic fill mass, including the boundary conditions for the design, effects of the design on its surroundings, the strength and stiffness of the fill mass, density, sensitivity to liquefaction, design considerations for special fill material such as silts, clays and carbonate sands, problematic subsoils and natural hazards • Quality control and monitoring of the fill mass and its behaviour after construction. This manual is of particular interest to clients, consultants, planning and consenting authorities, environmental advisors, contractors and civil, geotechnical, hydraulic and coastal engineers involved in dredging and land reclamation projects.

Book excerpt: A substantial proportion of low-rise construction in Britain is on filled ground and probelms due to settlement of the fill have occurred. Most poorly compacted fills undergo a reduction in volume when inundated or submerged for the first time, which if it happens after building construction can cause serious damage. This phenomenon, usually termed collapse compression, is often the most serious hazard for buildings on fill. The increase in moisture content of the fill which triggers collapse compression can be caused either by downward infiltration of surface water or by a rising ground water level. Where non-engineered fill is treated to improve its load-carrying properties, a primary objective should be to eliminate any significant collapse potential. Similarly, the specification and control procedures for placement and compaction of an engineered fill should aim to eliminate this type of volume change within the fill.

Book excerpt: The scarcity and cost of suitable land is leading increasingly to the development of sites where there are deep deposits of fill. Occasionally cases are reported where serious failures have occurred. These reports should not obscure the fact that many buildings have been successfully built on fill; they emphasise the importance of understanding the behaviour of fills, identifying potential hazards and adopting measures that will ensure successful development of these sites. Part 2 recommends that construction on existing filled areas should be preceded by careful investigation of the site which should be both appropriate and adequate. The site investigation may indicate that ground treatment is required before construction to improve the load-carrying properties of the fill, reducing or forestalling the effects of the unexpected. The Digest gives guidance only of a general nature and it must be recognised that the services of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers will usually be needed. Part 3 presents guidance for the specification and control of fills which are to be placed so that they can safely support low-rise buildings without the occurrence of damaging movements. Such fills are described as foundation fills. When new fill is to be placed, careful selection of the material and controlled placement should ensure that the fill forms an adequate foundation material. Part 3 is particularly relevant to building developments where relatively small volumes of fill are being placed (typically less than 50 000 m3) and consequently the resources available for design, testing, etc are quite limited. The Digest gives guidance only of a general nature and it must be recognised that the services of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers will usually be needed.

Book excerpt: - The first book of its kind, providing over thirty real-life case studies of ground improvement projects selected by the worlds top experts in ground improvement from around the globe. - Volume 3 of the highly regarded Elsevier Geo-engineering book series coordinated by the Series Editor: Professor John A Hudson FREng. - An extremely reader friendly chapter format. - Discusses wider economical and environmental issues facing scientists in the ground improvement.Ground improvement has been both a science and art, with significant developments observed through ancient history. From the use of straw as blended infill with soils for additional strength during the ancient Roman civilizations, and the use of elephants for compaction of earth dams during the early Asian civilizations, the concepts of reinforced earth with geosynthetics, use of electrokinetics and thermal modifications of soils have come a long way. The use of large and stiff stone columns and subsequent sand drains in the past has now been replaced by quicker to install and more effective prefabricated vertical drains, which have also eliminated the need for more expensive soil improvement methods. The early selection and application of the most appropriate ground improvement techniques can improve considerably not only the design and performance of foundations and earth structures, including embankments, cut slopes, roads, railways and tailings dams, but also result in their cost-effectiveness. Ground improvement works have become increasingly challenging when more and more problematic soils and marginal land have to be utilized for infrastructure development. This edited compilation contains a collection of Chapters from invited experts in various areas of ground improvement, who have illustrated the basic concepts and the applications of different ground improvement techniques using real projects that they have been involved in. The case histories from many countries ranging from Asia, America, Australia and Europe are addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction quality control testing is critical in ensuring that compacted fills are properly placed. One element in the successful implementation of compacted fill placement is the appropriate assignment of optimum moisture-density values for varying fill material types encountered during construction. For decades the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) has acquired laboratory moisture-density test data for a variety of material types from the 17 western states in which the USBR operates. A comparison between optimum moisture-density data published by the USBR is made with laboratory test results obtained from years of quality control testing of compacted fills on commercial projects throughout the Denver-Metro area. Optimum moisture content-maximum dry density curves are presented which provide a visual representation of the variability in the data which can be anticipated for each soil type evaluated. This data provides confirmation of the USBR database and can be used in estimating appropriate moisture content-dry density values, evaluating the validity of laboratory compaction test results obtained, as well as assessing the state of compaction of in-place fill material.

Book excerpt: Nothing can be built without some excavation and transfer of soil (or rock) from one part of a site to another and this makes earthworks the most common product of civil engineering operations. Although normally seen as major structures, such as earth fill dams or large highways or railway embankments, the majority of earthworks are connected with minor civil works and building construction. Whatever the type of work, the principles are the same. Earthworks: a guide accumulates information on topics that are essential to earthworks engineering.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
