The alternative solvent-free hot melt adhesives can be similarly compounded with additives, but variations in the base polymer are more easily achieved with the synthesis of a range of copolyesters or polyamides. Modern structural adhesives are toughened either by precipitation of a second phase from solution in a polymer or by the direct incorporation of finely dispersed rubber. All this and more is revealed in detail for the reader with a background in chemistry.
