Book Synopsis To Sin No More by : David Rex Galindo
Download or read book To Sin No More written by David Rex Galindo and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 300 years, Franciscans were at the forefront of the spread of Catholicism in the New World. In the late seventeenth century, Franciscans developed a far-reaching, systematic missionary program in Spain and the Americas. After founding the first college of propaganda fide in the Mexican city of Querétaro, the Franciscan Order established six additional colleges in New Spain, ten in South America, and twelve in Spain. From these colleges Franciscans proselytized Indians in frontier territories as well as Catholics in rural and urban areas in eighteenth-century Spain and Spanish America. To Sin No More is the first book to study these colleges, their missionaries, and their multifaceted, sweeping missionary programs. By focusing on the recruitment of non-Catholics to Catholicism as well as the deepening of religious fervor among Catholics, David Rex Galindo shows how the Franciscan colleges expanded and shaped popular Catholicism in the eighteenth-century Spanish Atlantic world. This book explores the motivations driving Franciscan friars, their lives inside the colleges, their training, and their ministry among Catholics, an often-overlooked duty that paralleled missionary deployments. Rex Galindo argues that Franciscan missionaries aimed to reform or "reawaken" Catholic parishioners just as much as they sought to convert non-Christian Indians.

Book Synopsis Book Markets in Mediterranean Europe and Latin America by : Montserrat Cachero
Download or read book Book Markets in Mediterranean Europe and Latin America written by Montserrat Cachero and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book depicts the Early Modern book markets in Europe and colonial Latin America. The nature of book production and distribution in this period resulted in the development of a truly international market. The integration of the book market was facilitated by networks of printers and booksellers, who were responsible for the connection of distant places, as well as local producers and merchants. At the same time, due to the particular nature of books, political and religious institutions intervened in book markets. Printers and booksellers lived in a politically fragmented world where religious boundaries often shifted. This book explores both the development of commercial networks as well as how the changing institutional settings shaped relationships in the book market.
Book Synopsis The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain by : Patrick J. O'Banion
Download or read book The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain written by Patrick J. O'Banion and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain explores the practice of sacramental confession in Spain between roughly 1500 and 1700. One of the most significant points of contact between the laity and ecclesiastical hierarchy, confession lay at the heart of attempts to bring religious reformation to bear upon the lives of early modern Spaniards. Rigid episcopal legislation, royal decrees, and a barrage of prescriptive literature lead many scholars to construct the sacrament fundamentally as an instrument of social control foisted upon powerless laypeople. Drawing upon a wide range of early printed and archival materials, this book considers confession as both a top-down and a bottom-up phenomenon. Rather than relying solely upon prescriptive and didactic literature, it considers evidence that describes how the people of early modern Spain experienced confession, offering a rich portrayal of a critical and remarkably popular component of early modern religiosity.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the opening of the Inquisition's archives in Spain in the nineteenth century, historians and anthropologists alike have seized upon the institution and its remarkable archival legacy, and have scrutinized it from a multitude of political, socio-economic, and cultural angles. Perhaps one of the most contentious hypotheses to have recently emerged from the field has been Benzion Netanyahu's proposal that the inquisitors fabricated charges of Judaizing against the Spanish New Christians (Christians of Jewish descent). This book questions Netanyahu's hypothesis by turning to the extant trial records from Aragon's tribunal of Saragossa, and employing them as a case study. This range of documents provides ample evidence of a true survival of Jewish ritual life and culture among the Aragonese conversos who were living and working in Saragossa at the end of the fifteenth century. When the Inquisition was established in Saragossa in 1484, members of the converso communities across Aragon, although denominationally Christian, were secretly observing the rituals of Judaism. Whether a continuing observance of the Sabbath, Yom Kippur, or Passover, enduring Jewish dietary practices or a deeply rooted prayer life, the picture of converso daily life which emerges from the trial records is essentially a Jewish one.
