Book excerpt: The consolidation characteristics of saturated soft clay under repeated impact loading are studied by laboratory tests. Particularly, the influence of drainage conditions on consolidation and reconsolidation of soft clay are analyzed in detail. The uniqueness of the relationship between pore water pressure and reconsolidation volumetric strain is described, and the methods for determining the coefficient of reconsolidation volume compressibility and the reconsolidation compression index are given. It is demonstrated that the samples undergoing several stages of impact and reconsolidation show an apparent quasi-overconsolidation state, and have an increased shear strength. Models for predicting the deformation and the undrained strength of soft clay foundation from impact loading are also suggested. In the models, the conditions of partial drainage and stages of impact are taken into account. Calculated results by the present models are in good agreement with the test data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinations of cohesive and cohesionless soils are often encountered when evaluating the engineering properties of soils. The stress-volume characteristics of the mixed soil are found to vary according to the proportion of each component. If the cohesive soil composes more than a certain fraction of the material, the magnitude of volume change for a stress increment will be a function of the compressibility of the cohesive soil. When the amount of cohesive material is less than this fraction, volume change is controlled by the behavior of the cohesionless material. Two methods have gained wide acceptance for predicting the behavior of soil mixtures. If more than 50 percent of the material is fine grained, the Unified Classification System defines the behavior of the system by the characteristics of the fine grained material. The American Association for State Highway Officials requires 35 percent or more fine grained material to define fine grained behavior. The purpose of this investigation was to establish a method for predicting the compressional characteristics of a mixture controlled by cohesive materials and to determine the percentage at which the cohesionless soil began to control the behavior. The two sized system was first investigated theoretically. Relationships were established for predicting the behavior of the mixture in one dimensional consolidation and for determining the point of control by the cohesionless component. The validity of the theoretical approach was established by performing a laboratory investigation. The program included nine consolidation tests on specimens with varying proportions of sand and clay. The results of the laboratory investigation indicated that the theoretical relationship for calculating the compressional characteristics was valid if the percentage of sand was less than 65 percent of the total weight of solids. Above 65 percent sand the cohesionless material dominated the behavior of the system making the theoretical relationship invalid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations on Expansive Soils provides the practicing engineer with a summary of the state-of-the-art of expansive soils and practical solutions based on the author's experience. The book is organized into two parts. Part I deals with theory and practice, and summarizes some of the theoretical physical properties of expansive soils. It also discusses various techniques employed to found structures on expansive soils such as drilled pier foundation, mat foundation, moisture control, soil replacement, and chemical stabilization. Topics covered include the origin, mineralogical composition, and the basic structure of expansive soils; the migration of water, swelling potential, and swelling pressure; site investigations and laboratory testing; moisture control; and soil stabilization. Part II presents case studies on the following: distress caused by pier uplift; distress caused by the improper design and construction of a drilled pier foundation system; distress caused by heaving of footing pad and floor slab; distress caused by heaving of continuous footings; and distress caused by a rise of ground water.

Book excerpt: The book addresses fundamental issues faced by experimentalists, modelers and engineers interested in different physical, mechanical and transport aspects of biological tissues and chemically active geological materials, mainly clays and shales. The focus is on the couplings between electro-chemical and mechanical aspects involved in swelling and chemical consolidation. Emphasis is laid on the influence of these phenomena on mechanical properties and on transport properties. Applications in geo-environmental and geotechnical technologies, including nuclear and hazardous waste isolation, oil recovery, engineering geology, are addressed directly or implied. Control of long term effects of surgery and mechanical performance of prostheses may benefit from the modeling of irreversibilities that are of utmost importance in geological materials. Conversely, understanding the self-regulation mechanisms of biological tissues may be helpful in the design of efficient engineering materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When investigating the probable settlement of a structure it is customary to perform a series of consolidation tests on undisturbed samples of the compressible material underlying the foundation. The purpose of such a testing program is to provide the engineer with the necessary data for evaluating the probable compression and the time rate of compression of the actual soil strata. Normally, the consolidation tests will be performed in a laboratory where temperatures may vary from 60 to 80 F. However, specimens used for consolidation tests are frequently taken at a depth where temperatures sometimes vary from 40 to over 80 F. The question then arises as to what effect this difference in temperature, between laboratory test conditions and in situ condition, might have on the compressive characteristics of the material and whether or not the effect is of significant proportions. The consolidation characteristics of a soil are normally evaluated by application of the Terzaghi theory of primary consolidation, which is based on a number of, simplifying assumptions and approximations. To estimate the rate of compression from this theory, it is necessary to determine the coefficient of consolidation which is expressed by the formula: Cv=k(1+e)av?w.(1) where: k = coefficient of permeability (assumed constant for each load increment), e = void ratio, usually the average for any load increment, av = coefficient of compressibility, and ? = unit weight of water From this relationship it can be seen that the coefficient of consolidation is directly proportional to the coefficient of permeability. It is known that permeability is related to viscosity which, in turn is related to temperature. Hence, it can be concluded that the coefficient of consolidation will depend on the temperature at which consolidation occurs. A closer analysis will show that the coefficient of consolidation should be directly proportional to temperature.

Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.
