Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first book on the conservation biology of invertebrate animals - the predominant components of most global communities - this volume synthesizes much important information in this emerging science. Global in scope, the book deals with animals in terrestrial, marine, and freshwatercommunities. Also included are chapters on biodiversity, rationale and priorities for invertebrate conservation and practical conservation, and suggestions on agendas for the future. Many examples are discussed, and comprehensive references given. A broad audience from conservationists andenvironmental scientists to specialists in invertebrate biology will want to add this to their list of sources.

Book Synopsis Invertebrate Conservation and Agricultural Ecosystems by : T. R. New
Download or read book Invertebrate Conservation and Agricultural Ecosystems written by T. R. New and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Conservation and Agricultural Ecosystems explores the diverse interests of invertebrate conservation and agricultural production. It is both an introduction to invertebrate conservation biology for agriculturists and an introduction to crop protection for conservation biologists, demonstrating how these two disparate fields may draw on each other for greater collective benefit. It draws on recent literature to show how invertebrate conservation in highly altered landscapes may be promoted and enhanced. The book deals with problems of, and approaches to, invertebrate conservation in highly managed agricultural ecosystems, and how biodiversity may be promoted without compromising agricultural production. It draws attention to the importance of invertebrates in agricultural systems and their role in ecosystem functions.

Book Synopsis ‘In Considerable Variety’: Introducing the Diversity of Australia’s Insects by : Tim R. New
Download or read book ‘In Considerable Variety’: Introducing the Diversity of Australia’s Insects written by Tim R. New and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces basic entomology, emphasising perspectives on insect diversity important in conservation assessment and setting priorities for management, as a foundation for managers and others without entomological training or background. It bridges the gap between photographic essays on insect identification and more technical texts, to illustrate and discuss many aspects of taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary diversity in the Australian insect fauna, and its impacts in human life, through outlines of many aspects of insect natural history.

Book Synopsis The Invertebrate World of Australia's Subtropical Rainforests by : Geoff Williams
Download or read book The Invertebrate World of Australia's Subtropical Rainforests written by Geoff Williams and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invertebrate World of Australia’s Subtropical Rainforests is a comprehensive review of Australia’s Gondwanan rainforest invertebrate fauna, covering its taxonomy, distribution, biogeography, fossil history, plant community and insect–plant relationships. This is the first work to document the invertebrate diversity of this biologically important region, as well as explain the uniqueness and importance of the organisms. This book examines invertebrates within the context of the plant world that they are dependent on and offers an understanding of Australia’s outstanding (but still largely unknown) subtropical rainforests. All major, and many minor, invertebrate taxa are described and the book includes a section of colour photos of distinctive species. There is also a strong emphasis on plant and habitat associations and fragmentation impacts, as well as a focus on the regionally inclusive Gondwana Rainforests (Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia) World Heritage Area. The Invertebrate World of Australia’s Subtropical Rainforests will be of value to professional biologists and ecologists, as well as amateur entomologists and naturalists in Australia and abroad.

Book excerpt: The scientific program spans the themes that explore the diversity, evolution, ecology and management of Australia's invertebrate fauna. The theme of the conference "Use it or lose it: invertebrate diversity in landscape managment", highlights the importance of recognising and valuing the role of invertebrates in our ecosystems and landscapes. We estimate there are around 500,00 species in Australia, and the vast majority are invertebrate, and beneficial to us, directly or indirectly. Invertebrates provide the functional links essential for ecosystem processes that in turn lead to benefits such as clean air and water. Threatening procesees including invasive species and climate change mean that we cannot any longer take these services and benefits for granted any longer. There is an urgent need to take a much greater role in actively managing our ecosystems and their invertebrate faunas in order to ensure our own wellbeing as well as theirs.'--PREFACE.
Book Synopsis Recovering Australian Threatened Species by : Stephen Garnett
Download or read book Recovering Australian Threatened Species written by Stephen Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s nature is exceptional, wonderful and important. But much has been lost, and the ongoing existence of many species now hangs by a thread. Against a relentless tide of threats to our biodiversity, many Australians, and government and non-government agencies, have devoted themselves to the challenge of conserving and recovering plant and animal species that now need our help to survive. This dedication has been rewarded with some outstanding and inspiring successes: of extinctions averted, of populations increasing, of communities actively involved in recovery efforts. Recovering Australian Threatened Species showcases successful conservation stories and identifies approaches and implementation methods that have been most effective in recovering threatened species. These diverse accounts – dealing with threatened plants, invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals – show that the conservation of threatened species is achievable: that it can be done and should be done. They collectively serve to inform, guide and inspire other conservation efforts. This is a book of hope and inspiration. It shows that with dedication, knowledge and support, we can retain and restore our marvellous natural heritage, and gift to our descendants a world that is as diverse, healthy and beautiful as that which we have inherited.
Book Synopsis Insect Diversity, Declines and Conservation in Australia by : Tim R. New
Download or read book Insect Diversity, Declines and Conservation in Australia written by Tim R. New and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems of insect enumeration and assessment of needs are addressed in the contexts of rapid and substantial losses and changes to all key Australian terrestrial and freshwater environments and promoting awarenesss of the importance of insects. Further definition of the insect fauna and its peculiarities can aid threat alleviation and practical management to protect and conserve this unique and largely endemic biodiversity. Written for the many environmental managers and naturalists who are not primarily entomologists, the ten chapters expand from considerations of insect decline and diversity to the unique features of the Australian fauna and its characterisation. Cases and examples from throughout the world illustrate the major needs, approaches and priorities to sustaining a poorly known, diverse and ecologically varied insect heritage of global significance.
Book Synopsis Insect Conservation and Australia’s Grasslands by : Tim R. New
Download or read book Insect Conservation and Australia’s Grasslands written by Tim R. New and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s varied grasslands have suffered massive losses and changes since European settlement, and those changes continue under increasingly intensive human pressures for development and agricultural production. The values of native grasslands for conservation of endemic native biodiversity, both flora and fauna, have led to strong interests in the protection of remaining fragments, especially near urban centres, and documentation of the insects and other inhabitants of grasslands spanning tropical to cool temperate parts of the country. Attention to conservation of grassland insects in Australia is relatively recent, but it is increasingly apparent that grasslands harbour many localised and ecologically specialised endemic species. Their conservation necessarily advances from very incomplete documentation, and draws heavily on lessons from the far better-documented grasslands elsewhere, most notably in the northern hemisphere, and undertaken over far longer periods. From those cases, and the extensive background to grassland management to harmonise conservation with production and amenity values through honing use of processes such as grazing, mowing and fire, the needs and priorities for Australia can become clearer, together with needs for grassland restoration at a variety of scales. This book is a broad overview of conservation needs of grassland insects in Australia, drawing on the background provided elsewhere in the world on the responses to disturbances, and the ecological importance, of some key insect groups (notably Orthoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera) to suggest how insect conservation in native, pastoral and urban grasslands may be advanced. The substantial references given for each chapter facilitate entry for non-entomologist grassland managers and stewards to appreciate the diversity and importance of Australia’s grassland insects, their vulnerabilities to changes, and the possibilities for conserving them and the wider ecological roles in which they participate.
