Book excerpt: Polymer composites represent materials of great and of continuously growing importance. Their potential for application appears to be limitless. They have been the subject of numerous studies both at academic and industrial levels. Much progress has been made in the incisive formulation of composites; sophisticated methods of property evaluation have been developed in the past decade and many, largely empirical solutions have been proposed to resolve the problem of their long-term performance under typical conditions of use (i. e. the use of silane or titane coupling agents to enhance adhesion within composite materials). Assuredly one of the most essential factors in the performance of these systems is the condition of the interface and interphase among the constituents of a given system. It has become clear that it is the interface/interphase, and the interactions which take place in this part of a system, which determine to a significant degree the initial properties of the material. In order to achieve leadership in the formulation and application of polymer composites, it is evident that in depth understanding of interfacial and interphase phenomena becomes a prerequisite.

Book excerpt: Interfaces between dissimilar materials are met everywhere in microelectronics and microsystems. In order to ensure faultless operation of these highly sophisticated structures, it is mandatory to have fundamental understanding of materials and their interactions in the system. In this difficult task, the “traditional” method of trial and error is not feasible anymore; it takes too much time and repeated efforts. In Interfacial Compatibility in Microelectronics, an alternative approach is introduced. In this revised method four fundamental disciplines are combined: i) thermodynamics of materials ii) reaction kinetics iii) theory of microstructures and iv) stress and strain analysis. The advantages of the method are illustrated in Interfacial Compatibility in Microelectronics which includes: solutions to several common reliability issues in microsystem technology, methods to understand and predict failure mechanisms at interfaces between dissimilar materials and an approach to DFR based on deep understanding in materials science, rather than on the use of mechanistic tools, such as FMEA. Interfacial Compatibility in Microelectronics provides a clear and methodical resource for graduates and postgraduates alike.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with some basic considerations of structure and its relation to function. After outlining some basic principles in the first chapter, including manufacturing effects, structural determination is discussed in detail. This is important since adequate characterization in terms of molecular size is necessary for a proper understanding and suse. The theme of interrelationships between structure and properties is developed in the next chapters. The second part of the volume deals with selected applications in which the development and sue of macromolecultar materials in specific applications is described. The selection of applications includes synthetic and natural polymers and the range of medical areas involved include orthopedics, dialysis, drug release (macromolecular pharmacology) blood contact, and plastic surgery. Since the list could not be completely comprehensive, these represent areas of special development or of continuing problems.

This review discusses ways of improving adhesion and bonding. It describes the theories surrounding adhesion of polyolefins and the analysis techniques which have been used to characterise the material surfaces. Methods of enhancing adhesion are then discussed. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Polymer Library gives useful references for further reading.

Williamsburg, Virginia, USA February 21-26,1993. This meeting featured an International Symposium on The Interphase. Interphases are extremely important in many areas of technology. They are formed when dissimilar materials are joined and they control the properties of adhesive joints, composites, coatings, and microelectronics devices. Considering the importance and scope of phenomena associated with the interphase, it was appropriate to convene such a symposium at the meeting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack initiation and growth are key issues when it comes to the mechanical reliab- ity of microelectronic devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Es- cially in organic electronics where exible substrates will play a major role these issues will become of utmost importance. It is therefore necessary to develop me- ods which in situ allow the experimental investigation of surface deformation and fracture processes in thin layers at a micro and nanometer scale. While scanning electron microscopy (SEM) might be used it is also associated with some major experimental drawbacks. First of all if polymers are investigated they usually have to be coated with a metal layer due to their commonly non-conductive nature. Additi- ally they might be damaged by the electron beam of the microscope or the vacuum might cause outgasing of solvents or evaporation of water and thus change material properties. Furthermore, for all kinds of materials a considerable amount of expe- mental effort is necessary to build a tensile testing machine that ts into the chamber. Therefore, a very promising alternative to SEM is based on the use of an atomic force microscope (AFM) to observe in situ surface deformation processes during straining of a specimen. First steps towards this goal were shown in the 1990s in [1–4] but none of these approaches truly was a microtensile test with sample thicknesses in the range of micrometers. To the authors’ knowledge, this was shown for the rst time by Hild et al. in [5]. 16.

Book excerpt: Structural Order in Polymers presents the increasing importance of the relationships between order in the chemical constitution and in the steric structure of the macromolecules and physical and chemical properties of the polymers. This book discusses the simple types of steric order found in biopolymers. Organized into three parts encompassing 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the structural regularity as a primary requisite for the crystallization of a polymer. This text then examines the structure of cellulose, which is the most significant structural stereoregular polymer. Other chapters consider the major concepts of the stereoregulation of propylene catalytic polymerization. This book discusses as well the factors that determine microstructure and stereospecifity in polymerization. The final chapter deals with the significant role that membranes and membrane-related processes play in solving many ecological problems. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers, chemists, physicists, scientists, and research workers.
