Book excerpt: Increasing ambient temperature is a major climatic factor that negatively affects plant growth and development, and causes significant losses in soybean crop yield worldwide. Thus, high temperatures (HT) result in less seed germination, which leads to pathogenic infection, and decreases the economic yield of soybean. In addition, the efficiency of photosynthesis and transpiration of plants are affected by high temperatures, which have negative impact on the physio-biochemical process in the plant system, finally deteriorate the yield and quality of the affected crop. However, plants have several mechanisms of specific cellular detection of HT stress that help in the transduction of signals, producing the activation of transcription factors and genes to counteract the harmful effects caused by the stressful condition. Among the contributors to help the plant in re-establishing cellular homeostasis are the applications of organic stimulants (antioxidants, osmoprotectants, and hormones), which enhance the productivity and quality of soybean against HT stress. In this chapter, we summarized the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of soybean plants at various growth stages under HT. Furthermore, it also depicts the mitigation strategies to overcome the adverse effects of HT on soybean using exogenous applications of bioregulators. These studies intend to increase the understanding of exogenous biochemical compounds that could reduce the adverse effects of HT on the growth, yield, and quality of soybean.

The planets average surface temperature has risen to about 1oC since the late 19th century and most of the warming occurred in the past 40 years. The years 2016 and 2020 are tied for the warmest year on the record. Similarly, other evidence of rapid climate change includes warming of oceans, shrinking of ice sheets, retreating glaciers, decreasing snow cover, rising of sea level, declining artic sea ice, increased frequency of extreme events, ocean acidification and loss of biodiversity. Hence, climate change impacts, both extreme weather and slow-onset events, have impacted several sectors of the national economies and activities, in particular agriculture and food production, augmented by other challenges be it geopolitical, cost of finance or supply chain related, and in a time of increased food insecurity. Without CO2 fertilization, effective adaptation, and genetic improvement, each degree-Celsius increase in global mean temperature would, on average, reduce global yields of wheat by 6.0%, rice by 3.2%, maize by 7.4%, and soybean by 3.1%. Hence this book is useful as a study material to teach in the field of agriculture and climate change. Merr.] is an important source of health-beneficial compounds, including tocopherols, lutein and soyasaponin I. In this study, data from an 11-year field experiment was used to determine the effects of temperature and precipitation during different growth stage intervals on the concentration of these compounds in mature soybean seeds. Tocopherol concentrations in soybean was most influenced by air temperature changes, while lutein concentration was more sensitive to precipitation. Heat stress accumulation greater than 31°C from the mid-vegetative stage to physiological maturity (V3-R7) was significantly correlated (r2= 0.94) with [alpha]-tocopherol concentration. Lutein concentration was negatively correlated with cumulative precipitation (cppt) during seed development to harvest (R5 to R8). Cultivars with higher tocopherol or lutein concentrations were less affected by climatic variables than cultivars with lower concentrations. Although soyasaponin I concentration response to air temperature and precipitation variables were observed at specific growth stage intervals for some cultivars, the responses were complex and cultivar specific. The air temperature of 20°C appeared to be a critical threshold in determining soybean soyasaponin I concentration response to air temperature. This research may be used to improve the production of health beneficial compounds by ensuring the soybean plants are exposed to the favorable climatic conditions during their most responsive stages"--
