Book Synopsis Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness by : Anil Seth
Download or read book Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness written by Anil Seth and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do conscious experience, subjectivity, and free will arise from the brain and the body? Even in the late 20th century, consciousness was considered to be beyond the reach of science. Now, understanding the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness is recognized as a key objective for 21st century science. The cognitive neuroscience of consciousness is a fundamentally multidisciplinary enterprise, involving powerful new combinations of functional brain imaging, computational modelling, theoretical innovation, and basic neurobiology. Its progress will be marked by new insights not only into the complex brain mechanisms underlying consciousness, but also by novel clinical approaches to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. These innovations are well represented by the contents of the present volume. A target article by Victor Lamme puts forward the contentious position that neural evidence should trump evidence from behaviour and introspection, in any theory of consciousness. This article and its several commentaries advance one of the fundamental debates in consciousness science, namely whether there exists non-reportable phenomenal consciousness, perhaps dependent on local rather than global neural processes. Other articles explore the wider terrain of the new science of consciousness. For example, Maniscalco and colleagues use theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation to selectively impair metacognitive awareness; Massimini and coworkers examine changes in functional connectivity during anesthesi, and Vanhaudenhuyse et al describe innovations in detecting residual awareness following traumatic brain injury. Together, then contents of this volume exemplify the `grand challenge of consciousness' in combining transformative questions about the human condition with a tractable programme of experimental and theoretical research.

Download or read book Rekill written by Ian Kennedy Martin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REKILL is the gripping story of a manhunt. The target is Van Dhoc. Tall, soft-spoken, a former captain of the North Vietnamese Army, he has a psychopaths obsession: to work his way, systematically and ruthlessly, down a list of participants in the brutal massacre at Da Loc, a village that had been wiped from the map one sunny afternoon in the war. John Leeming, former head of a Special Forces Camp in Vietnam has a past of his own to conceal - a past which had eventually driven him back to the anonymity of civilian life. For him, the summons to Paris by SHAPE represents an unexpected opportunity to remake his history. Then he witnesses the grisly aftermath of Van Dhoc's latest strike and derives his own obsession, to hunt down and either kill or be killed by the man capable of such madness. It is a mission that will take him as far as Albania and to the ancient citadel of Scutari, there to discover the most important military secret of the decade.

Book Synopsis Listen to Your Footsteps by : Kojo Baffoe
Download or read book Listen to Your Footsteps written by Kojo Baffoe and published by Pan MacMillan. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Those who know Kojo would have known what to expect in Listen to Your Footsteps a deeply personal, authentic and equally intellectual journey of a quintessential African. A storyteller for the ages, every word and anecdote is like being alone with him in a quiet place as he narrates what it takes to be a real man, doting father, loving son, devoted friend and committed partner. - THEBE IKALAFENG, founder and principal at Africa Brand Leadership Academy 'An insightful memoir of Kojo growing up, navigating family and figuring out his contribution to the world that reads as a beautiful ode to his father. With every word he writes there is a sense of responsibility to leave the world better than he found it. A true wordsmith; the landscape of his memories dances on the page.' - TUMI MORAKE, comedian and author of And then Mama Said Kojo Baffoe embodies what it is to be a contemporary African man. Of Ghanaian and German heritage, he was raised in Lesotho and moved to South Africa at the age of 27. Forever curious, Kojo has the enviable ability to simultaneously experience moments intimately and engage people (and their views) sincerely, while remaining detached enough to think through his experiences critically. He has earned a reputation as a thinker, someone who lives outside the box and free of the labels that society seeks to place on us. Listen to Your Footsteps is an honest and, at times, raw collection of essays from a son, a father, a husband, a brother and a man deeply committed to doing the internal work. Kojo reflects on losing his mother as a toddler, being raised by his father, forming an identity, living as an immigrant, his tussles with substance abuse, as well as his experiences of fatherhood, marriage and making a career in a fickle industry. He gives an extended glimpse into the experiences that make boys become men, and the battles that make men discover what they are made of, all the while questioning what it means to be 'a man'.
