Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a parent in the modern world is tough. We are often overwhelmed with fear about damaging our children, guilt about our imperfections, and confusion about our role. Harriet Connor knows these feelings well. But hers is not just another parenting book full of "shoulds and shouldn'ts" to make you feel worse. Rather, she invites you to step back and consider the bigger picture: What is the purpose of life and parenthood? What are our human limitations? How can we cope with our guilt and fear? What are our family's values and how do we pass them on? What is our family's structure and place within the wider community? When she was desperate for answers, Harriet Connor turned to the ancient wisdom of her ancestors--the Bible. She went looking for little pieces of grandmotherly advice, but what she found was a grand vision--a big picture--that made sense of both life and parenthood. Whether you are new to the Bible or have read it before, you will not regret taking time to reflect on its message, which has given comfort and guidance to generations of parents just like you.

Book excerpt: She walked into my pub. Invaded my island paradise. Invaded my fantasies. I had to have her. I moved to St. Martin after I retired from the Navy SEALS. It was paradise at a slower pace, perfect for avoiding my demons, trying to forget the PTSD that came with those covert missions. Brandi is a pretty blond tourist with sad eyes. When I walk her back to her hotel one night, our passion ignites. Blazing kisses lead to more. This fling is a bad idea. Sexiest bad idea I ever had. A one-night stand turns into more. Feelings I can't control. Desire I can't fight. I can't give her what she deserves. I have to let her go. Make sure she never looks back, never wants to see me again. It's for her own good. Too bad I figure out too late that I can't live without her in my bed and in my life. I have to find her. Beg her to take me back. Then I'll make her beg and scream my name again. It seemed like a good plan, till I laid eyes on her. And discovered I'm not the only one who was keeping a secret.

Book excerpt: In the next part of Neal Shusterman's gripping and thought-provoking futuristic thriller, Connor, Lev and Risa continue to uncover shocking secrets about the process of 'Unwinding' and the company, Proactive Citizenry, which created Cam, a teen made completely from parts taken from 'unwound' teens. There are plans to mass produce rewound teens like Cam for military purposes, and below the surface of that potential horror lies a sinister layer of intrigue… Proactive Citizenry has been suppressing technology that could make unwinding completely unnecessary. Will Connor, Lev and Risa ever be able to break free from the fear of Unwinding? Praise for Unwind: "Following in the footsteps of Jonathan Swift, Shusterman uncorks a Modest Proposal of his own…" Booklist "Gripping, brilliantly imagined futuristic thriller… The issues raised could not be more provocative - the sanctity of life, the meaning of being human - while the delivery could hardly be more engrossing or better aimed to teens." Publishers Weekly, starred review "a powerful, shocking, and intelligent novel... It's wonderful, wonderful stuff." thebookbag.co.uk "This is the kind of rare book that makes the hairs on your neck rise up. It is written with a sense of drama that should get it instantly snapped up for film." The Times

Book excerpt: After a homeless runaway is found dead in an alley, the case lands in the laps of detective sergeant Liz Jordan and rookie officer Kyle Connors. It is not long before Jordan and Connors realize that it is futile to follow the usual investigative avenues. They must seek help, not just from those providing services to the homeless, but from the homeless themselves. Unfortunately it is not easy to engage the street community in the pursuit of a killer. While searching for anyone who knew the young woman and information on her background, Jordan and Connors must find a way to contact invisible people who lack addresses and phone numbers. Mike Dwyer, Jordans long-time friend and shelter manager, and Kelly Blevins, an outreach worker, provide introductions into a culture that is wary of the establishment. While delving into the world of the most vulnerable, Jordan uncovers a web of deceit and exploitation while relying on the homeless for insight. But even with their help, will Jordan and Connors solve this crime in time to save another victim? Set in the Pacific Northwest, this tale offers a chilling view of the dangerous and unpredictable world of the homeless.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the phenomenon of infanticide in Ireland from 1850 to 1900, examining a sample of 4,645 individual cases of infant murder, attempted infanticide and concealment of birth. Evidence for this study has been gleaned from a variety of sources, including court documents, coroners’ records, prison files, parliamentary papers, and newspapers. Through these sources, many of which are rarely used by scholars, attitudes towards the crime, the women accused of the offence, and the victim, are revealed. Although infant murder was a capital offence during this period, none of the women found guilty of the crime were executed, suggesting a degree of sympathy and understanding towards the accused. Infanticide cases also allude to complex dynamics and tensions between employers and servants, parents and pregnant daughters, judges and defendants, and prison authorities and inmates. This book highlights much about the lived realities of nineteenth-century Ireland.

But because Devon's body was never recovered from the waters, Marcy has found it difficult to come to terms with her death and keeps seeing her daughter in the faces of strangers. Book excerpt: As a child Saoirse Corcoran was rejected. As an adult she is sought out by strangers. The reason for both is the same - her power. Born in the mid-sixties to a mother who desperately wanted to keep her but couldn't, put in an institutional crib and situation, she is visited by a guiding force who she will come to know in future days, who protects a baby born to survive inhuman treatment in a staunch Catholic society, and to change it with the strength of her life experience. Saoirse's mother Maisie, sleeps in a different part of St. Patrick's Mother and Baby Home, sharing a collective sorrow that will haunt and mark Ireland's social history. Saoirse is set apart from the beginning - marked with a psychic gift which serves as her greatest ally and strength against coming judgement and condemnation. When Lil and Joe Corcoran adopt her, she is four months old with and ancient soul. There is the hope of happy ever after. At first, their love is unconditional, but then the deeper aspect of her nature triggers their great fear. They reject her abilities, forcing her back into another convent, run by St. Agnes, who sees and treats Saoirse as evil. Saoirse holds onto the truth that love is the only property to heal an emotionally enslaved, repressed Ireland. Her friendships give her hope. Her family become her greatest teachers. The search for her identity centres on her first shared sorrow, separated only by walls, a mother and her child who felt each other's presence. On a harrowing journey, Saoirse is drawn to the deepest bond of all which is still a mystery. She moves to re-unite, to find out who Maisie was and finds out more than who her mother was. She discovers what she knew all along, from the moment she was born. Her gift came from somewhere unknown and now returns to claim its source. She learns the name and nature of the presence that guarded her lonely crib.

Book excerpt: A summer romance headed for heartbreak turns into a mother-daughter road trip in the name of true love in this story of love, loss, and redemption from Printz Honor medal winner and National Book Award finalist Deb Caletti. It is summer in the northwest town of Nine Mile Falls, and Ruby McQueen—ordinarily dubbed The Quiet Girl—finds herself hanging out with gorgeous, rich, thrill-seeking Travis Becker. With Travis, Ruby can be someone she’s never been before: Fearless. Powerful. But Ruby is in over her head, risking more and more when she’s with him. In an effort to keep Ruby occupied and mend her own broken heart, her mother, Ann, drags Ruby to the weekly book club she runs for seniors. At first, Ruby can’t imagine a more boring way to spend an afternoon, but she is soon charmed by the women she’s spending time with. And when the group discovers one of their own members is the subject of the tragic love story they are reading, Ann and Ruby ditch their respective obsessions to spearhead a reunion between the long-ago lovers. They’re in search of a happy ending…but for who? This lyrical, multigenerational story of love, loss, and redemption speaks to everyone who has ever been in love—and lived to tell the tale.
