Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist Thirty-Sixth Report, 1936 HE winter of 1935-36 was neither very severe nor extremely mild. There was a fair amount of snowfall and some steady cold weather but not such extremely low temperatures as in the two preceding winters. On the whole there was probably less alternate freezing and thawing than in most winters, and in general, plants came through in good shape. Peach buds were killed only in a few localities, and there was nearly a full crop of fruit for the first time since 1933. The precipitation for January, March, April, June, September and October was considerably above the normal, but for February, May, July, August and November it was below the normal. The heaviest rainfall came in June and was more than three times the normal amount. The lightest rainfall was in November. That for both July and November was less than half the normal. The rainfall for the growing season, May to September, inclusive, was nearly four inches or 21 percent above the normal. However, it was not distributed in a normal manner and if a portion of the June precipitation could have fallen in July and August it would undoubtedly have proved a greater benefit to most crops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist Thirty-Seventh Report, 1937 The winter of 1936-37 was unusually mild, with little snowfall and no very low temperatures near the coast. Although temperatures were much lower at certain inland points, apparently little or no damage resulted as there was a full peach crop. In general, plants came through the winter without climatic injury. The year was outstanding because of unusually heavy rainfall. For the first 10 months, the total precipitation at the Mount Carmel farm was inches, or inches above the normal which is inches. Less than the normal amount fell during the months of February, March, May, July and September. A considerable increase above the normal occurred during January, April, June, August and October. Although less than the normal amount of rainfall occurred during the growing months of May, July and September it was well distributed, and the shortage was not sufficient to affect the growing crops. In fact, good crops were Obtained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist, Thirty-Third Report, 1933 Linn, in woodland in Wolcott, required much time and attention in scout ing and spraying. In July, just after the spraying season had ended, a large infestation was discovered near Groton Long Point where nearly 30 acres of oak and maple woodland were stripped. Here the number of egg-clusters will run into hundreds of thousands and the place is now being cleaned. One of the most outstanding entomological events of the season has been the opportunity to take advantage of help from the United States Government in forest insect control by appropriations to furnish work for the unemployed through the Civilian Conservation Corps Camps, the Public Works Administration, and the Civil Works Administration. Weeviled white pine tips over large areas in state forests were cut and burned between June 25 and August 15. Considerable scouting has been done for gipsy moth, and red and Scotch pine tips infested with Euro pean pine shoot moth have been Clipped off and burned. More of this work will be done during the next few months. An insect pest survey of the season is given on the following pages, arranged in brief form' to save Space and expense in printing. Some of the more important items are treated in greater detail in the separate articles and notes printed elsewhere in this report. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist Thirty-Ninth Report, 1939 Dr. Britton was born at Marlboro, Massachusetts, September 18, 1868. His family moved to a farm in Gilsum, New Hampshire. There, in a distinctly rural environment, the impress of which lasted throughout his life, Dr. Britton spent his early years. He attended the local schools and worked on the farm, raising the crops, caring for livestock, lumbering, making maple sugar, etc. Life was a bit rigorous, but conducive to integ rity, industry, frugality, and independence Of thought and action. He enjoyed it. Later he attended the New Hampshire College Of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts at Hanover (now the University Of New Hampshire at Durham), from which he received the degree of Bachelor Of Science in 1893. If later performance is any criterion, he must have been a good student. The year following graduation was spent at Cornell University studying under L. H. Bailey. Apparently at that time Dr. Britton's main interests lay in the field Of horticulture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist, Forty-Second Report, 1942 It is often possible to noticeably reduce the insect population, or its effect on plants, by what may be called cultural operations. That proper fertilization and cultivation are necessary to good crop production needs no further argument. Insect pests Simply make a poorly grown crop poorer. Speeding up the growth of plants through proper soil fertilization may reduce the length of time they are exposed to insect attack. An example is that of the bean crop as affected by the Mexican bean beetle. Cultivation destroys some pests. The cultivation of peach orchards ln the spring is said to reduce the abundance of oriental fruit moths Which are then in the larval stage, many of them on the ground under the trees W hether or not extensive cultivation of peach Orchards IS otherwise bene ficial 15 another matter.
