Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist 46th Report, 1946 In the practical use Of such materials, efficiency in application is always a significant item, and the apparatus which can be employed economically may be very important. The recent development Of airplane sprayers 'and mist blowers for dispensing concentrated liquid mixtures has markedly in creased the practicability Oi controlling certain pests. In the initial development Of new materials, the cost has a minor place. The Objective is to find the toxicity and the possibilities Of utilization and allow the price factor to be the last one involved in rejecting or accepting the chemical compound. Although our knowledge Of the action Of chemical compounds on pests has increased more in the last 10 years than during any Similar preceding period, we cannot use these compounds without a detailed knowledge of the habits, life' cycle and ecology Of the pest involved. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut State Entomologist, Forty-Second Report, 1942 It is often possible to noticeably reduce the insect population, or its effect on plants, by what may be called cultural operations. That proper fertilization and cultivation are necessary to good crop production needs no further argument. Insect pests Simply make a poorly grown crop poorer. Speeding up the growth of plants through proper soil fertilization may reduce the length of time they are exposed to insect attack. An example is that of the bean crop as affected by the Mexican bean beetle. Cultivation destroys some pests. The cultivation of peach orchards ln the spring is said to reduce the abundance of oriental fruit moths Which are then in the larval stage, many of them on the ground under the trees W hether or not extensive cultivation of peach Orchards IS otherwise bene ficial 15 another matter.
