Book Synopsis Environmental Corrosion-fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Alloys by : D. N. Williams
Download or read book Environmental Corrosion-fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Alloys written by D. N. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Book Synopsis Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Data by : R. E. Little
Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Data written by R. E. Little and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1981 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly assumed in analysing fatigue data that there is a definite functional relationship between life in number of cycles and stress level. However, as has been pointed out several times (1, 2), an examination of the data shows considerable scatter. Even with carefully prepared smooth specimens, all from the same heat of steel, treated in the same manner and tested in the same laboratory, a range of 2 to 1 in number of cycles for failure at the same stress level is normal (1) and a range of 10 to 1 is not unusual (2). If the specimens are tested by different laboratories, slightly varying techniques will introduce further scatter (3).
Book Synopsis Influence of Prior Heat and Creep on Fatigue in Structural Elements of DTD 5014 (RR58) Aluminium Alloy by : F. E. Kiddle
Download or read book Influence of Prior Heat and Creep on Fatigue in Structural Elements of DTD 5014 (RR58) Aluminium Alloy written by F. E. Kiddle and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of heat on fatigue have been studied by fatigue tests at ambient temperature on specimens first subjected to a single period of heating with and without steady load applied. The tests employed constant amplitude loading on various structural elements in DTD 5014 (RR58) aluminium alloy material. Heating was applied at temperatures in the range 100 deg C to 170 deg C for times ranging from 1h to 20000h. The initiation of fatigue cracks was significantly affected by heating, particularly at temperatures of 110 deg C and higher when the effects occurred comparatively rapidly. The two mechanisms of importance were changes in microstructure at the machined surface which encouraged initiation, and changes in residual stress by creep which encouraged or discouraged initiation according to the creep being compressive or tensile.

Papers without specific authors are listed at the conclusion of the alphabetical section of each year. In order to provide easy access to particular subject matter, the bibliography includes a comprehensive Subject Index and an Author Index. Abbreviations are extensively used for the titles of journals and other publications. Topics covered include changes in the internal structure of iron; causes of axle failures in locomotives, tenders, and wagons and how to avoid them; the behavior of metals under repeated stress; the resistance of steel to vibration; heat treatment and fatigue of steel; and the effect of strain on railway axles. This volume will be a useful resource for students, engineers, metallurgists, and research workers.
Book Synopsis Mechanical Fatigue of Metals by : José A.F.O. Correia
Download or read book Mechanical Fatigue of Metals written by José A.F.O. Correia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the XIX International Colloquium on Mechanical Fatigue of Metals, held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal, 5-7 September 2018. This International Colloquium facilitated and encouraged the exchange of knowledge and experiences among the different communities involved in both basic and applied research in the field of the fatigue of metals, looking at the problem of fatigue exploring analytical and numerical simulative approaches. Fatigue damage represents one of the most important types of damage to which structural materials are subjected in normal industrial services that can finally result in a sudden and unexpected abrupt fracture. Since metal alloys are still today the most used materials in designing the majority of components and structures able to carry the highest service loads, the study of the different aspects of metals fatigue attracts permanent attention of scientists, engineers and designers.

Book Synopsis Limite de fatigue des métaux by : Claude Bathias
Download or read book Limite de fatigue des métaux written by Claude Bathias and published by ISTE Group. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Mechanical and Microstructural Effects in Fretting Fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V by : Brett Page Conner
Download or read book Mechanical and Microstructural Effects in Fretting Fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V written by Brett Page Conner and published by . This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fretting fatigue is the repetitive sliding of contacting surfaces at small displacements and can cause cracking that leads to failure in the presence of a bulk fatigue load. Dovetail joints in gas turbine engines are particularly susceptible to fretting fatigue and are the motivation for this study. Experiments are conducted in ambient air utilizing a sphere-on-flat contact geometry since its contact mechanics are well known. The effect of changing critical contact and bulk loading parameters are examined in depth for a mill annealed and solution treated overaged variants of Ti-6Al-4V. Parameters which are instrumented and controlled include the applied normal load, tangential load, and axial fatigue load. The fretting fatigue resistance of several other heat treated variants of Ti-6Al-4V are compared versus the two more common variants. Various stages of fretting fatigue crack growth are examined using a fracture mechanics approach. A multiaxial stress-based crack initiation criteria is developed and evaluated. The adhesion model of Giannakopoulos et al., is invoked to determine a contact fatigue threshold of 2 MPa square root of m for Ti-6Al-4V and forms the basis of a life-prediction methodology. Finally, the usefulness of various surface treatments and dovetail designs as palliatives to counter fretting fatigue is discussed.
