Book excerpt: This study tested the hypotheses that family conflict and family cohesion would be significant predictors of youths' problem behaviors after controlling for demographic variables and other family process variables. The sample included 156 adolescents, teachers, and parents. Adolescents and parents completed three self-report family functioning instruments (FACES II, SFI, FES); all sources completed the CBCL. Adolescents' reports supported both hypotheses. Results varied when mothers' and fathers' reports were used. Fathers' reports showed only family conflict to be significant, and mothers' reports showed only family cohesion to be significant. Teachers' reports showed no significant results. Implications of these results are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how perceived family climate relate to the development of anxious and avoidant attachment in emerging adults. Data were collected from 2,841 emerging adults with self-report surveys from one public university in Southern California. The results indicated that perceived overt and covert interparental conflict were positively correlated to avoidant attachment and anxious attachment in men and women, while perceived interparental conflict resolution and family cohesion were negatively correlated to avoidant attachment and anxious attachment in men and women. In the multiple regression analyses, (1) covert interparental conflict was related to avoidant attachment and anxious attachment in men and women, (2) family cohesion was related to anxious attachment of women and men as well as women's avoidant attachment, (3) overt interparental conflict was related to men's anxious and avoidant attachment, and (4) interparental conflict resolution was related to women's anxious attachment. Thus, emerging adults are more susceptible to develop anxious or avoidant attachment when they experience higher levels of interparental conflict with little to no resolution and/or lower levels of family cohesion. Clinicians should examine conflict resolution of family of origin when the client is experiencing problems with conflict resolution or relationship issues. Also, clinicians can help emerging adult clients identify ways to recognize family cohesion and learn ways to manage experiences of overt and covert conflict between parents.
